Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a potential candidate to further enhance the spectrum utilization efficiency in beyond fifth-generation (B5G) standards. However, there has been little attention on the quantification of the delay-limited performance of downlink NOMA systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a two-user downlink NOMA system over generalized {alpha}-{mu} fading in terms of delay violation probability (DVP) and effective rate (ER). In particular, we derive an analytical expression for an upper bound on the DVP and we derive the exact sum ER of the downlink NOMA system. We also derive analytical expressions for high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximations to the sum ER, as well as a fundamental upper bound on the sum ER which represents the ergodic sum-rate for the downlink NOMA system. We also analyze the sum ER of a corresponding time-division-multiplexed orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system. Our results show that while NOMA consistently outperforms OMA over the practical SNR range, the relative gain becomes smaller in more severe fading conditions, and is also smaller in the presence a more strict delay quality-of-service (QoS) constraint.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are set to feature heavily in upcoming fifth generation (5G) networks. Yet, the adoption of multi-UAV networks means that spectrum scarcity in UAV communications is an issue in need of urgent solutions. Towards this en d, downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is investigated in this paper for multi-UAV networks to improve spectrum utilization. Using the bivariate Rician shadowed fading model, closed-form expressions for the joint probability density function (PDF), marginal cumulative distribution functions (CDFs), and outage probability expressions are derived. Under a stochastic geometry framework for downlink NOMA at the UAVs, an outage probability analysis of the multi-UAV network is conducted, where it is shown that downlink NOMA attains lower outage probability than orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Furthermore, it is shown that NOMA is less susceptible to shadowing than OMA.
Wireless communications is often subject to channel fading. Various statistical models have been proposed to capture the inherent randomness in fading, and conventional model-based receiver designs rely on accurate knowledge of this underlying distri bution, which, in practice, may be complex and intractable. In this work, we propose a neural network-based symbol detection technique for downlink fading channels, which is based on the maximum a-posteriori probability (MAP) detector. To enable training on a diverse ensemble of fading realizations, we propose a federated training scheme, in which multiple users collaborate to jointly learn a universal data-driven detector, hence the name FedRec. The performance of the resulting receiver is shown to approach the MAP performance in diverse channel conditions without requiring knowledge of the fading statistics, while inducing a substantially reduced communication overhead in its training procedure compared to centralized training.
This paper considers crowded massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications over a Rician fading channel, where the number of users is much greater than the number of available pilot sequences. A joint user identification and line-of-si ght (LOS) component derivation algorithm is proposed without requiring a threshold. Based on the derived LOS component, we design a LOS-only channel estimator and an updated channel estimator.
Wireless communications over fast fading channels are challenging, requiring either frequent channel tracking or complicated signaling schemes such as orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In this paper, we propose low-complexity frequen cy domain equalizations to combat fast fading, based on novel discrete delay-time and frequency-Doppler channel models. Exploiting the circular stripe diagonal nature of the frequency-Doppler channel matrix, we introduce low-complexity frequency domain minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization for OTFS systems with fully resolvable Doppler spreads. We also demonstrate that the proposed MMSE equalization is applicable to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems with short signal frames and partially resolvable Doppler spreads. After generalizing the input-output data symbol relationship, we analyze the equalization performance via channel matrix eigenvalue decomposition and derive a closed-form expression for the theoretical bit-error-rate. Simulation results for OTFS, OFDM, and SC-FDE modulations verify that the proposed low-complexity frequency domain equalization methods can effectively exploit the time diversity over fast fading channels. Even with partially resolvable Doppler spread, the conventional SC-FDE can achieve performance close to OTFS, especially in fast fading channels with a dominating line-of-sight path.

In this paper, we present the delay-constrained performance analysis of a multi-antenna-assisted multiuser non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based spectrum sharing system over Rayleigh fading channels. We derive analytical expressions for the sum effective rate (ER) for the downlink NOMA system under a peak interference constraint. In particular, we show the effect of the availability of different levels of channel state information (instantaneous and statistical) on the system performance. We also show the effect of different parameters of interest, including the peak tolerable interference power, the delay exponent, the number of antennas and the number of users, on the sum ER of the system under consideration. An excellent agreement between simulation and theoretical results confirms the accuracy of the analysis.
