Nanotechnology has not only provided us the possibility of developing quantum machines but also noncanonical power sources able to drive them. Here we focus on studying the performance of quantum machines driven by arbitrary combinations of equilibrium reservoirs and a form of engineered reservoirs consisting of noninteracting particles but whose distribution functions are nonthermal. We provide the expressions for calculating the maximum efficiency of those machines without needing any knowledge of how the nonequilibrium reservoirs were actually made. The formulas require the calculation of a quantity that we term entropy current, which we also derive. We illustrate our methodology through a solvable toy model where heat spontaneously flows against the temperature gradient.

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in nanomachines. Among them, current-driven ones deserve special attention as quantum effects can play a significant role there. Examples of the latter are the so-called adiabatic quantum motors. In this work, we propose using Andersons localization to induce nonequilibrium forces in adiabatic quantum motors. We study the nonequilibrium current-induced forces and the maximum efficiency of these nanomotors in terms of their respective probability distribution functions. Expressions for these distribution functions are obtained in two characteristic regimes: the steady-state and the short-time regimes. Even though both regimes have distinctive expressions for their efficiencies, we find that, under certain conditions, the probability distribution functions of their maximum efficiency are approximately the same. Finally, we provide a simple relation to estimate the minimal disorder strength that should ensure efficient nanomotors.

It is shown that the excitation of charge carriers by ac electric field with zero average driving leads to a direct electric current in quantum well structures. The current emerges for both linear and circular polarization of the ac electric field an d depends on the field polarization and frequency. We present a micoscopic model and an analytical theory of such a nonlinear electron transport in quantum wells with structure inversion asymmetry. In such systems, dc current is induced by ac electric field which has both the in-plane and out-of-plane components. The ac field polarized in the interface plane gives rise to a direct current if the quantum well is subjected to an in-plane static magnetic field.

We extend the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nondegenerate multiband electron systems to the spin Hall effect (SHE) and unconventional Edelstein effect (UEE, cannot be accounted for by the conventional Boltzm ann equation, unlike the conventional Edelstein effect). This extension is confirmed by extending the Kohn-Luttinger density-matrix transport theory in the weak disorder-potential regime. By performing Kubo linear response calculations in a prototypical multiband model, the Boltzmann scaling for the AHE/SHE and UEE is found to be valid only if the disorder-broadening of bands is quite smaller than the minimal intrinsic energy-scale around the Fermi level. Discussions on this criterion in various multiband systems are also presented. A qualitative phase diagram is proposed to show the influences of changing independently the impurity density and strength of disorder potential on the AHE/SHE and UEE.
We study transport of noninteracting fermions through a periodically driven quantum point contact (QPC) connecting two tight-binding chains. Initially, each chain is prepared in its own equilibrium state, generally with a bias in chemical potentials and temperatures. We examine the heating rate (or, alternatively, energy increase per cycle) in the nonequilibrium time-periodic steady state established after initial transient dynamics. We find that the heating rate vanishes identically when the driving frequency exceeds the bandwidth of the chain. We first establish this fact for a particular type of QPC where the heating rate can be calculated analytically. Then we verify numerically that this nonequilibrium phase transition is present for a generic QPC. Finally, we derive this effect perturbatively in leading order for cases when the QPC Hamiltonian can be considered as a small perturbation. Strikingly, we discover that for certain QPCs the current averaged over the driving cycle also vanishes above the critical frequency, despite a persistent bias. This shows that a driven QPC can act as a frequency-controlled quantum switch.
In materials lacking inversion symmetry, the spin-orbit coupling enables the direct connection between the electrons spin and its linear momentum, a phenomenon called inverse spin galvanic effect. In magnetic materials, this effect promotes current-d riven torques that can be used to control the magnetization direction electrically. In this work, we investigate the current-driven inverse spin galvanic effect in a quantum well consisting in a magnetic material embedded between dissimilar insulators. Assuming the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling at the interfaces, we investigate the nature of the non-equilibrium spin density and the influence of the quantum well parameters. We find that the torque is governed by the interplay between the number of states participating to the transport and their spin chirality, the penetration of the wave function into the tunnel barriers, and the strength of the Rashba term.
