Weyl points are the simplest topologically-protected degeneracy in a three-dimensional dispersion relation. The realization of Weyl semimetals in photonic crystals has allowed these singularities and their consequences to be explored with electromagnetic waves. However, it is difficult to achieve nonlinearities in such systems. One promising approach is to use the strong-coupling of photons and excitons, because the resulting polaritons interact through their exciton component. Yet topological polaritons have only been realized in two dimensions. Here, we predict that the dispersion relation for polaritons in three dimensions, in a bulk semiconductor with an applied magnetic field, contains Weyl points and Weyl line nodes. We show that absorption converts these Weyl points to Weyl exceptional rings. We conclude that bulk semiconductors are a promising system in which to investigate topological photonics in three dimensions, and the effects of dissipation, gain, and nonlinearity.

The usual concepts of topological physics, such as the Berry curvature, cannot be applied directly to non-Hermitian systems. We show that another object, the quantum metric, which often plays a secondary role in Hermitian systems, becomes a crucial q uantity near exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems, where it diverges in a way that fully controls the description of wavepacket trajectories. The quantum metric behaviour is responsible for a constant acceleration with a fixed direction, and for a non-vanishing constant velocity with a controllable direction. Both contributions are independent of the wavepacket size.

I theoretically investigate the response of bulk semiconductors to excitation by twisted light below the energy bandgap. To this end, I modify a well-known model of light-semiconductor interaction to account for the conservation of the lights momentu m. I show that the excited states can be thought of as a superposition of slightly perturbed exciton states undergoing a complex center-of-mass motion. In addition, the absorption would occur at a slightly shifted energy (compared to plane waves) and would exhibit complex spatial patterns in the polarization and current.
Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities of energy levels in non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, we demonstrate the surface of EPs on a magnon polariton platform composed of coupled magnons and microwave photons. Our experiments show that EPs fo rm a three-dimensional exceptional surface (ES) when the system is tuned in a four-dimensional synthetic space. We demonstrated that there exists an exceptional saddle point (ESP) in the ES which originates from the unique couplings between magnons and microwave photons. Such an ESP exhibits unique anisotropic behaviors in both the real and imaginary part of the eigenfrequencies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental observation of ES, opening up new opportunities for high-dimensional control of non-Hermitian systems.
While conventional semiconductor technology relies on the manipulation of electrical charge for the implementation of computational logic, additional degrees of freedom such as spin and valley offer alternative avenues for the encoding of information . In transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers, where spin-valley locking is present, strong retention of valley chirality has been reported for MoS$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ while MoSe$_2$ shows anomalously low valley polarisation retention. In this work, chiral selectivity of MoSe$_2$ cavity polaritons under helical excitation is reported with a polarisation degree that can be controlled by the exciton-cavity detuning. In contrast to the very low circular polarisation degrees seen in MoSe$_2$ exciton and trion resonances, we observe a significant enhancement of up to 7 times when in the polaritonic regime. Here, polaritons introduce a fast decay mechanism which inhibits full valley pseudospin relaxation and thus allows for increased retention of injected polarisation in the emitted light. A dynamical model applicable to cavity-polaritons in any TMD semiconductor, reproduces the detuning dependence through the incorporation of the cavity-modified exciton relaxation, allowing an estimate of the spin relaxation time in MoSe$_2$ which is an order of magnitude faster than those reported in other TMDs. The valley addressable exciton-polaritons reported here offer robust valley polarised states demonstrating the prospect of valleytronic devices based upon TMDs embedded in photonic structures, with significant potential for valley-dependent nonlinear polariton-polariton interactions.
Surface plasmon polaritons in a strained slab of a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry are investigated. It is found that the strain-induced axial gauge field reduces frequencies of these collective modes for intermediate values of the wave vector. Depending on the relative orientation of the separation of Weyl nodes in momentum space, the surface normal, and the direction of propagation, the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons could be nonreciprocal even in a thin slab. In addition, strain-induced axial gauge fields can significantly affect the localization properties of the collective modes. These effects allow for an in situ control of the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in Weyl semimetals and might be useful for creating nonreciprocal devices.
