CANs are a broadcast protocol for real-time communication of critical vehicle subsystems. Original equipment manufacturers of passenger vehicles hold secret their mappings of CAN data to vehicle signals, and these definitions vary according to make, model, and year. Without these mappings, the wealth of real-time vehicle information hidden in the CAN packets is uninterpretable, impeding vehicle-related research. Guided by the 4-part CAN signal definition, we present CAN-D (CAN-Decoder), a modular, 4-step pipeline for identifying each signals boundaries (start bit, length), endianness (byte order), signedness (bit-to-integer encoding), and by leveraging diagnostic standards, augmenting a subset of the extracted signals with physical interpretation. We provide a comprehensive review of the CAN signal reverse engineering research. Previous methods ignore endianness and signedness, rendering them incapable of decoding many standard CAN signal definitions. Incorporating endianness grows the search space from 128 to 4.72E21 signal tokenizations and introduces a web of changing dependencies. We formulate, formally analyze, and provide an efficient solution to an optimization problem, allowing identification of the optimal set of signal boundaries and byte orderings. We provide two novel, state-of-the-art signal boundary classifiers-both superior to previous approaches in precision and recall in three different test scenarios-and the first signedness classification algorithm which exhibits a $>$97% F-score. CAN-D is the only solution with the potential to extract any CAN signal. In evaluation on 10 vehicles, CAN-Ds average $ell^1$ error is 5x better than all previous methods and exhibits lower ave. error, even when considering only signals that meet prior methods assumptions. CAN-D is implemented in lightweight hardware, allowing for an OBD-II plugin for real-time in-vehicle CAN decoding.

The Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol is ubiquitous in modern vehicles, but the protocol lacks many important security properties, such as message authentication. To address these insecurities, a rapidly growing field of research has emerged tha t seeks to detect tampering, anomalies, or attacks on these networks; this field has developed a wide variety of novel approaches and algorithms to address these problems. One major impediment to the progression of this CAN anomaly detection and intrusion detection system (IDS) research area is the lack of high-fidelity datasets with realistic labeled attacks, without which it is difficult to evaluate, compare, and validate these proposed approaches. In this work we present the first comprehensive survey of publicly available CAN intrusion datasets. Based on a thorough analysis of the data and documentation, for each dataset we provide a detailed description and enumerate the drawbacks, benefits, and suggested use cases. Our analysis is aimed at guiding researchers in finding appropriate datasets for testing a CAN IDS. We present the Real ORNL Automotive Dynamometer (ROAD) CAN Intrusion Dataset, providing the first dataset with real, advanced attacks to the existing collection of open datasets.
The direct detection and characterization of planetary and substellar companions at small angular separations is a rapidly advancing field. Dedicated high-contrast imaging instruments deliver unprecedented sensitivity, enabling detailed insights into the atmospheres of young low-mass companions. In addition, improvements in data reduction and PSF subtraction algorithms are equally relevant for maximizing the scientific yield, both from new and archival data sets. We aim at developing a generic and modular data reduction pipeline for processing and analysis of high-contrast imaging data obtained with pupil-stabilized observations. The package should be scalable and robust for future implementations and in particular well suitable for the 3-5 micron wavelength range where typically (ten) thousands of frames have to be processed and an accurate subtraction of the thermal background emission is critical. PynPoint is written in Python 2.7 and applies various image processing techniques, as well as statistical tools for analyzing the data, building on open-source Python packages. The current version of PynPoint has evolved from an earlier version that was developed as a PSF subtraction tool based on PCA. The architecture of PynPoint has been redesigned with the core functionalities decoupled from the pipeline modules. Modules have been implemented for dedicated processing and analysis steps, including background subtraction, frame registration, PSF subtraction, photometric and astrometric measurements, and estimation of detection limits. The pipeline package enables end-to-end data reduction of pupil-stabilized data and supports classical dithering and coronagraphic data sets. As an example, we processed archival VLT/NACO L and M data of beta Pic b and reassessed the planets brightness and position with an MCMC analysis, and we provide a derivation of the photometric error budget.
A cost effectively method to fabricate nanopores in silicon by only using the conventional wet-etching technique is developed in this research. The main concept of the proposed method is a two-step etching process, including a premier double-sided we t etching and a succeeding track-etching. A special fixture is designed to hold the pre-etched silicon wafer inside it such that the track-etching can be effectively carried out. An electrochemical system is employed to detect and record the ion diffusion current once the pre-etched cavities are etched into a through nanopore. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can cost effectively fabricate nanopores in silicon.

The automatic selection of an appropriate time step size has been considered extensively in the literature. However, most of the strategies developed operate under the assumption that the computational cost (per time step) is independent of the step size. This assumption is reasonable for non-stiff ordinary differential equations and for partial differential equations where the linear systems of equations resulting from an implicit integrator are solved by direct methods. It is, however, usually not satisfied if iterative (for example, Krylov) methods are used. In this paper, we propose a step size selection strategy that adaptively reduces the computational cost (per unit time step) as the simulation progresses, constraint by the tolerance specified. We show that the proposed approach yields significant improvements in performance for a range of problems (diffusion-advection equation, Burgers equation with a reaction term, porous media equation, viscous Burgers equation, Allen--Cahn equation, and the two-dimensional Brusselator system). While traditional step size controllers have emphasized a smooth sequence of time step sizes, we emphasize the exploration of different step sizes which necessitates relatively rapid changes in the step size.
The Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller is widely used in industries for process control applications. Fractional-order PID controllers are known to outperform their integer-order counterparts. In this paper, we propose a new technique of fra ctional-order PID controller synthesis based on peak overshoot and rise-time specifications. Our approach is to construct an objective function, the optimization of which yields a possible solution to the design problem. This objective function is optimized using two popular bio-inspired stochastic search algorithms, namely Particle Swarm Optimization and Differential Evolution. With the help of a suitable example, the superiority of the designed fractional-order PID controller to an integer-order PID controller is affirmed and a comparative study of the efficacy of the two above algorithms in solving the optimization problem is also presented.
