We investigate two classes of quantum control problems by using frequency-domain optimization algorithms in the context of ultrafast laser control of quantum systems. In the first class, the system model is known and a frequency-domain gradient-based optimization algorithm is applied to searching for an optimal control field to selectively and robustly manipulate the population transfer in atomic Rubidium. The other class of quantum control problems involves an experimental system with an unknown model. In the case, we introduce a differential evolution algorithm with a mixed strategy to search for optimal control fields and demonstrate the capability in an ultrafast laser control experiment for the fragmentation of Pr(hfac)$_3$ molecules.

This paper provides a brief introduction to learning control of quantum systems. In particular, the following aspects are outlined, including gradient-based learning for optimal control of quantum systems, evolutionary computation for learning contro l of quantum systems, learning-based quantum robust control, and reinforcement learning for quantum control.
This paper is concerned with quadratic-exponential functionals (QEFs) as risk-sensitive performance criteria for linear quantum stochastic systems driven by multichannel bosonic fields. Such costs impose an exponential penalty on quadratic functions of the quantum system variables over a bounded time interval, and their minimization secures a number of robustness properties for the system. We use an integral operator representation of the QEF, obtained recently, in order to compute its asymptotic infinite-horizon growth rate in the invariant Gaussian state when the stable system is driven by vacuum input fields. The resulting frequency-domain formulas express the QEF growth rate in terms of two spectral functions associated with the real and imaginary parts of the quantum covariance kernel of the system variables. We also discuss the computation of the QEF growth rate using homotopy and contour integration techniques and provide two illustrations including a numerical example with a two-mode oscillator.

Quantum variational algorithms have garnered significant interest recently, due to their feasibility of being implemented and tested on noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. We examine the robustness of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), which can be used to solve certain quantum control problems, state preparation problems, and combinatorial optimization problems. We demonstrate that the error of QAOA simulation can be significantly reduced by robust control optimization techniques, specifically, by sequential convex programming (SCP), to ensure error suppression in situations where the source of the error is known but not necessarily its magnitude. We show that robust optimization improves both the objective landscape of QAOA as well as overall circuit fidelity in the presence of coherent errors and errors in initial state preparation.
A Lyapunov-based method is presented for stabilizing and controlling of closed quantum systems. The proposed method is constructed upon a novel quantum Lyapunov function of the system state trajectory tracking error. A positive-definite operator in t he Lyapunov function provides additional degrees of freedom for the designer. The stabilization process is analyzed regarding two distinct cases for this operator in terms of its vanishing or non-vanishing commutation with the Hamiltonian operator of the undriven quantum system. To cope with the global phase invariance of quantum states as a result of the quantum projective measurement postulate, equivalence classes of quantum states are defined and used in the proposed Lyapunov-based analysis and design. Results show significant improvement in both the set of stabilizable quantum systems and their invariant sets of state trajectories generated by designed control signals. The proposed method can potentially be applied for high-fidelity quantum control purposes in quantum computing frameworks.
Robustness and reliability are two key requirements for developing practical quantum control systems. The purpose of this paper is to design a coherent feedback controller for a class of linear quantum systems suffering from Markovian jumping faults so that the closed-loop quantum system has both fault tolerance and H-infinity disturbance attenuation performance. This paper first extends the physical realization conditions from the time-invariant case to the time-varying case for linear stochastic quantum systems. By relating the fault tolerant H-infinity control problem to the dissipation properties and the solutions of Riccati differential equations, an H-infinity controller for the quantum system is then designed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In particular, an algorithm is employed to introduce additional noises and to construct the corresponding input matrices to ensure the physical realizability of the quantum controller. For real applications of the developed fault-tolerant control strategy, we present a linear quantum system example from quantum optics, where the amplitude of the pumping field randomly jumps among different values. It is demonstrated that a quantum H-infinity controller can be designed and implemented using some basic optical components to achieve the desired control goal.
