We investigate the role of nonclassical temporal correlations in enhancing the performance of ticking clocks in a discrete-time scenario. We show that the problem of optimal models for ticking clocks is related to the violation of Leggett-Garg-type temporal inequalities formulated in terms of, possibly invasive, sequential measurements, but on a system with a bounded memory capacity. Ticking clocks inspire the derivation of a family of temporal inequalities showing a gap between classical and quantum correlations, despite involving no input. We show that quantum ticking-clock models achieving accuracy beyond the classical bound are also those violating Leggett-Garg-type temporal inequalities for finite sequences and we investigate their continuous-time limit. Interestingly, we show that optimal classical clock models in the discrete-time scenario do not have a well-defined continuous-time limit, a feature that is absent in quantum models.

Nonclassical optomechanical correlations enable optical control of mechanical motion beyond the limitations of classical driving. Here we investigate the feasibility of using pulsed cavity-optomechanics to create and verify nonclassical phase-sensiti ve correlations between light and the motion of a levitated nanoparticle in a realistic scenario. We show that optomechanical two-mode squeezing can persist even at the elevated temperatures of state-of-the-art experimental setups. We introduce a detection scheme based on optical homodyning that allows revealing nonclassical correlations without full optomechanical state tomography. We provide an analytical treatment using the rotating wave approximation (RWA) in the resolved-sideband regime and prove its validity with a full numerical solution of the Lyapunov equation beyond the RWA. We build on parameters of current experiments for our analysis and conclude that the observation of nonclassical correlations is possible today.
State-of-the-art atomic clocks are based on the precise detection of the energy difference between two atomic levels, measured as a quantum phase accumulated in a given time interval. Optical-lattice clocks (OLCs) now operate at or near the standard quantum limit (SQL) that arises from the quantum noise associated with discrete measurement outcomes. While performance beyond the SQL has been achieved in microwave clocks and other atomic sensors by engineering quantum correlations (entanglement) between the atoms, the generation of entanglement on an optical-clock transition and operation of such a clock beyond the SQL represent major goals in quantum metrology that have never been demonstrated. Here we report creation of a many-atom entangled state on an optical transition, and demonstrate an OLC with an Allan deviation below the SQL. We report a metrological gain of $4.4^{+0.6}_{-0.4}$ dB over the SQL using an ensemble consisting of a few hundred 171Yb atoms, allowing us to reach a given stability $2.8{pm}0.3$ times faster than the same clock operated at the SQL. Our results should be readily applicable to other systems, thus enabling further advances in timekeeping precision and accuracy. Entanglement-enhanced OLCs will have many scientific and technological applications, including precision tests of the fundamental laws of physics, geodesy, or gravitational wave detection.
We define two ways of quantifying the quantum correlations based on quantum Fisher information (QFI) in order to study the quantum correlations as a resource in quantum metrology. By investigating the hierarchy of measurement-induced Fisher informati on introduced in Lu et al. [X. M. Lu, S. Luo, and C. H. Oh, Phys Rev. A 86, 022342 (2012)], we show that the presence of quantum correlation can be confirmed by the difference of the Fisher information induced by the measurements of two hierarchies. In particular, the quantitative quantum correlations based on QFI coincide with the geometric discord for pure quantum states.
Photon-number correlation measurements are performed on bright squeezed vacuum states using a standard Bell-test setup, and quantum correlations are observed for conjugate polarization-frequency modes. We further test the entanglement witnesses for t hese states and demonstrate the violation of the separability criteria, which infers that all the macroscopic Bell states, containing typically $10^6$ photons per pulse, are polarization entangled. The study also reveals the symmetry of macroscopic Bell states with respect to local polarization transformations.
We study nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement in a family of two-mode non-Gaussian states which represent the continuous-variable counterpart of two-qubit Werner states. We evaluate quantum discord and other quantumness measures obtaining ex act analytical results in special instances, and upper and lower bounds in the general case. Non-Gaussian measurements such as photon counting are in general necessary to solve the optimization in the definition of quantum discord, whereas Gaussian measurements are strictly suboptimal for the considered states. The gap between Gaussian and optimal non-Gaussian conditional entropy is found to be proportional to a measure of non-Gaussianity in the regime of low squeezing, for a subclass of continuous-variable Werner states. We further study an example of a non-Gaussian state which is positive under partial transposition, and whose nonclassical correlations stay finite and small even for infinite squeezing. Our results pave the way to a systematic exploration of the interplay between nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity in continuous-variable systems, in order to gain a deeper understanding of -and to draw a bigger advantage from- these two important resources for quantum technology.
