We generalize an idea in the works of Landauer and Bennett on computations, and Hills in chemical kinetics, to emphasize the importance of kinetic cycles in mesoscopic nonequilibrium thermodynamics (NET). For continuous stochastic systems, a NET in phase space is formulated in terms of cycle affinity $ ablawedgebig(mathbf{D}^{-1}mathbf{b}big)$ and vorticity potential $mathbf{A}(mathbf{x})$ of the stationary flux $mathbf{J}^{*}= ablatimesmathbf{A}$. Each bivectorial cycle couples two transport processes represented by vectors and gives rise to Onsagers reciprocality; the scalar product of the two bivectors $mathbf{A}cdot ablawedgebig(mathbf{D}^{-1}mathbf{b}big)$ is the rate of local entropy production in the nonequilibrium steady state. An Onsager operator that maps vorticity to cycle affinity is introduced.

We develop the stochastic approach to thermodynamics based on the stochastic dynamics, which can be discrete (master equation) continuous (Fokker-Planck equation), and on two assumptions concerning entropy. The first is the definition of entropy itse lf and the second, the definition of entropy production rate which is nonnegative and vanishes in thermodynamic equilibrium. Based on these assumptions we study interacting systems with many degrees of freedom in equilibrium or out of thermodynamic equilibrium, and how the macroscopic laws are derived from the stochastic dynamics. These studies include the quasi-equilibrium processes, the convexity of the equilibrium surface, the monotonic time behavior of thermodynamic potentials, including entropy, the bilinear form of the entropy production rate, the Onsager coefficients and reciprocal relations, and the nonequilibrium steady states of chemical reactions.
Self-supervised learning (SSL) of energy based models has an intuitive relation to equilibrium thermodynamics because the softmax layer, mapping energies to probabilities, is a Gibbs distribution. However, in what way SSL is a thermodynamic process? We show that some SSL paradigms behave as a thermodynamic composite system formed by representations and self-labels in contact with a nonequilibrium reservoir. Moreover, this system is subjected to usual thermodynamic cycles, such as adiabatic expansion and isochoric heating, resulting in a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). In this picture, we show that learning is seen as a demon that operates in cycles using feedback measurements to extract negative work from the system. As applications, we examine some SSL algorithms using this idea.

We present an experiment in which a one-bit memory is constructed, using a system of a single colloidal particle trapped in a modulated double-well potential. We measure the amount of heat dissipated to erase a bit and we establish that in the limit of long erasure cycles the mean dissipated heat saturates at the Landauer bound, i.e. the minimal quantity of heat necessarily produced to delete a classical bit of information. This result demonstrates the intimate link between information theory and thermodynamics. To stress this connection we also show that a detailed Jarzynski equality is verified, retrieving the Landauers bound independently of the work done on the system. The experimental details are presented and the experimental errors carefully discussed
Using an additivity property, we study particle-number fluctuations in a system of interacting self-propelled particles, called active Brownian particles (ABPs), which consists of repulsive disks with random self-propulsion velocities. From a fluctua tion-response relation - a direct consequence of additivity, we formulate a thermodynamic theory which captures the previously observed features of nonequilibrium phase transition in the ABPs from a homogeneous fluid phase to an inhomogeneous phase of coexisting gas and liquid. We substantiate the predictions of additivity by analytically calculating the subsystem particle-number distributions in the homogeneous fluid phase away from criticality where analytically obtained distributions are compatible with simulations in the ABPs.
Onsagers variational principle (OVP) was originally proposed by Lars Onsager in 1931 [L. Onsager, $Phys. Rev.$, 1931, $37$, 405]. This fundamental principle provides a very powerful tool for formulating thermodynamically consistent models. It can als o be employed to find approximate solutions, especially in the study of soft matter dynamics. In this work, OVP is extended and applied to the dynamic modeling of active soft matter such as suspensions of bacteria and aggregates of animal cells. We first extend the general formulation of OVP to active matter dynamics where active forces are included as external non-conservative forces. We then use OVP to analyze the directional motion of individual active units: a molecular motor walking on a stiff biofilament and a toy two-sphere microswimmer. Next, we use OVP to formulate a diffuse-interface model for an active polar droplet on a solid substrate. In addition to the generalized hydrodynamic equations for active polar fluids in the bulk region, we have also derived thermodynamically consistent boundary conditions. Finally, we consider the dynamics of a thin active polar droplet under the lubrication approximation. We use OVP to derive a generalized thin film equation and then employ OVP as an approximation tool to find the spreading laws for the thin active polar droplet. By incorporating the activity of biological systems into OVP, we develop a general approach to construct thermodynamically consistent models for better understanding the emergent behaviors of individual animal cells and cell aggregates or tissues.
