We address the Merton problem of maximizing the expected utility of terminal wealth using techniques from variational analysis. Under a general continuous semimartingale market model with stochastic parameters, we obtain a characterization of the optimal portfolio for general utility functions in terms of a forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE) and derive solutions for a number of well-known utility functions. Our results complement a previous studies conducted on optimal strategies in markets driven by Brownian noise with random drift and volatility parameters.

In this work we analytically solve an optimal retirement problem, in which the agent optimally allocates the risky investment, consumption and leisure rate to maximise a gain function characterised by a power utility function of consumption and leisu re, through the duality method. We impose different liquidity constraints over different time spans and conduct a sensitivity analysis to discover the effect of this kind of constraint.
This paper considers a life-time consumption-investment problem under the Black-Scholes framework, where the investors consumption rate is subject to a lower bound constraint that linearly depends on the investors wealth. Due to the state-dependent c ontrol constraint, the standard stochastic control theory cannot be directly applied to our problem. We overcome this obstacle by examining an equivalent problem that does not impose state-dependent control constraint. It is shown that the value function is a third-order continuously differentiable function by using differential equation approaches. The feedback form optimal consumption and investment strategies are given. According to our findings, if the investor is more concerned with long-term consumption than short-term consumption, then she should, regardless of her financial condition, always consume as few as possible; otherwise, her optimal consumption strategy is state-dependent: consuming optimally when her financial condition is good, and consuming at the lowest possible rate when her financial situation is bad.
In this paper, we are concerned with the optimization of a dynamic investment portfolio when the securities which follow a multivariate Merton model with dependent jumps are periodically invested and proceed by approximating the Condition-Value-at-Ri sk (CVaR) by comonotonic bounds and maximize the expected terminal wealth. Numerical studies as well as applications of our results to real datasets are also provided.
We derive new results related to the portfolio choice problem for power and logarithmic utilities. Assuming that the portfolio returns follow an approximate log-normal distribution, the closed-form expressions of the optimal portfolio weights are obt ained for both utility functions. Moreover, we prove that both optimal portfolios belong to the set of mean-variance feasible portfolios and establish necessary and sufficient conditions such that they are mean-variance efficient. Furthermore, an application to the stock market is presented and the behavior of the optimal portfolio is discussed for different values of the relative risk aversion coefficient. It turns out that the assumption of log-normality does not seem to be a strong restriction.

The call auction is a widely used trading mechanism, especially during the opening and closing periods of financial markets. In this paper, we study a standard call auction problem where orders are submitted according to Poisson processes, with rando m prices distributed according to a general distribution, and may be cancelled at any time. We compute the analytical expressions of the distributions of the traded volume, of the lower and upper bounds of the clearing prices, and of the price range of these possible clearing prices of the call auction. Using results from the theory of order statistics and a theorem on the limit of sequences of random variables with independent random indices, we derive the weak limits of all these distributions. In this setting, traded volume and bounds of the clearing prices are found to be asymptotically normal, while the clearing price range is asymptotically exponential. All the parameters of these distributions are explicitly derived as functions of the parameters of the incoming orders flows.
