Nonlocal quark bilinear operators connected by link paths are used for studying parton distribution functions (PDFs) and transverse momentum-dependent PDFs of hadrons using lattice QCD. The nonlocality makes it difficult to understand the renormalization and improvement of these operators using standard methods. In previous work, we showed that by introducing an auxiliary field on the lattice, one can understand an on-axis Wilson-line operator as the product of two local operators in an extended theory. In this paper, we provide details about the calculation in perturbation theory of the factor for conversion from our lattice-suitable renormalization scheme to the MS-bar scheme. Extending our work, we study Symanzik improvement of the extended theory to understand the pattern of discretization effects linear in the lattice spacing, $a$, which are present even if the lattice fermion action exactly preserves chiral symmetry. This provides a prospect for an eventual $O(a)$ improvement of lattice calculations of PDFs. We also generalize our approach to apply to Wilson lines along lattice diagonals and to piecewise-straight link paths.

Quark bilinear operators with staple-shaped Wilson lines are used to study transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Here, the renormalization factors for the isovector operators, including all mixings between operators with different Dirac structures, are computed nonperturbatively in the regularization-independent momentum subtraction scheme for the first time. This study is undertaken in quenched QCD with three different lattice spacings. With Wilson flow applied to the gauge fields in the calculations, the operator mixing pattern due to chiral symmetry breaking with the lattice regularization is found to be significantly different from that predicted by one-loop lattice perturbation theory calculations. These results constitute a critical step towards the systematic extraction of TMDPDFs from lattice QCD.
We present results for the renormalization of gauge invariant nonlocal fermion operators which contain a Wilson line, to one loop level in lattice perturbation theory. Our calculations have been performed for Wilson/clover fermions and a wide class o f Symanzik improved gluon actions. The extended nature of such `long-link operators results in a nontrivial renormalization, including contributions which diverge linearly as well as logarithmically with the lattice spacing, along with additional finite factors. We present nonperturbative prescriptions to extract the linearly divergent contributions.
Quasi-PDFs provide a path toward an ab initio calculation of parton distribution functions (PDFs) using lattice QCD. One of the problems faced in calculations of quasi-PDFs is the renormalization of a nonlocal operator. By introducing an auxiliary fi eld, we can replace the nonlocal operator with a pair of local operators in an extended theory. On the lattice, this is closely related to the static quark theory. In this approach, we show how to understand the pattern of mixing that is allowed by chiral symmetry breaking, and obtain a master formula for renormalizing the nonlocal operator that depends on three parameters. We present an approach for nonperturbatively determining these parameters and use perturbation theory to convert to the MS-bar scheme. Renormalization parameters are obtained for two lattice spacings using Wilson twisted mass fermions and for different discretizations of the Wilson line in the nonlocal operator. Using these parameters we show the effect of renormalization on nucleon matrix elements with pion mass approximately 370 MeV, and compare renormalized results for the two lattice spacings. The renormalized matrix elements are consistent among the different Wilson line discretizations and lattice spacings.

We review a relativistic approach to the heavy quark physics in lattice QCD by applying a relativistic $O(a)$ improvement to the massive Wilson quark action on the lattice. After explaining how power corrections of $m_Q a$ can be avoided and remainin g uncertainties are reduced to be of order $(aLambda_{rm QCD})^2$, we demonstrate a determination of four improvement coefficients in the action up to one-loop level in a mass dependent way. We also show a perturbative determination of mass dependent renormalization factors and $O(a)$ improvement coefficients for the vector and axial vector currents. Some preliminary results of numerical simulations are also presented.
In this paper, we examine the effect of nonzero quark masses on the renormalization of gauge-invariant nonlocal quark bilinear operators, including a finite-length Wilson line (called Wilson-line operators). These operators are relevant to the defini tion of parton quasi-distribution functions, the calculation on the lattice of which allows the direct nonperturbative study of the corresponding physical parton distribution functions. We present our perturbative calculations of the bare Greens functions, the renormalization factors in RI and MSbar schemes, as well as the conversion factors of these operators between the two renormalization schemes. Our computations have been performed in dimensional regularization at one-loop level, using massive quarks. The conversion factors can be used to convert the corresponding lattice nonperturbative results to the MSbar scheme, which is the most widely used renormalization scheme for the analysis of experimental data in high-energy physics. Also, our study is relevant for disentangling the additional operator mixing which occurs in the presence of nonzero quark masses, both on the lattice and in dimensional regularization.
