We present several recently synthesized nanocomposites consisting of liquid crystals as well as an organic molecular crystal embedded into the nanochannels of mesoporous alumina and silica. As liquid-crystalline mesogens achiral, nematogen and chiral cholesteric guest molecules infiltrated into nanochannels by spontaneous imbibition were chosen. The molecular ordering inside the nanochannels, which can be tailored by modifying the surface anchoring, was characterized by optical polarimetry (linear and/or circular birefringence) in combination with X-ray diffraction. For the synthesis of the solid crystalline nanocomposites ferroelectric triglycine sulfate (TGS) nanocrystals were deposited into the nanochannels by slow evaporation of saturated water solutions imbibed into the porous hosts. Their textural and physicochemical properties were explored by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and dielectric techniques.

The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of elastic properties of polystyrene-based nanocomposites filled with different types of inclusions: small spherical particles (SiO2 and Al2O3), alumosilicates (montmorillonite, halloysite natural tubules a nd Mica) and carbon nanofillers (carbon black and multi-walled carbon nanotubes). Composites were fabricated by melt technology. The analysis of composite melts showed that the introduction of Montmorillonite, Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and Al2O3 particles provided an increase in melt viscosity by an average of 2 to 5 orders of magnitude over the pure polystyrene. Block samples of composites with different filler concentrations were prepared, and their linear and nonlinear elastic properties were studied. The introduction of more rigid particles led to a more profound increase in the elastic modulus of the composite, with the highest rise of about 80% obtained with carbon fillers. Carbon black particles provided also an enhanced strength at break of about 20% higher than that of pure polystyrene. The nonlinear elastic moduli of composites were shown to be more sensitive to addition of filler particles to the polymer matrix than the linear ones. The nonlinearity coefficient $beta$ comprising the combination of linear and nonlinear elastic moduli of a material demonstrated considerable changes correlating with changes of the Youngs modulus. The absolute value of $beta$ showed rise in 1.5-1.6 times in the CB- and HNT-containing composites as compared to that of pure PS. The changes in nonlinear elasticity of fabricated composites were compared with measurements of the parameters of bulk nonlinear strain waves in them. Variations of wave velocity and decay decrement correlated with observed enhancement of materials nonlinearity.
We demonstrate theoretically that in a spintronic diode (SD), having a free magnetic layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the first and second order and no external bias magnetic field, the out-of-plane regime of magnetization precession c an be excited by sufficiently large (exceeding a certain threshold) RF signals with the frequencies <~250 MHz. We also show that such a device can operate as a broadband energy harvester capable of converting incident RF power into a DC power with the conversion efficiency of ~5%. The developed analytical theory of the bias-free SD operation can be used for the optimization of high-efficiency RF detectors and energy harvesters based on SDs.
The coherent manipulation of acoustic waves on the nanoscale usually requires multilayers with thicknesses and interface roughness defined down to the atomic monolayer. This results in expensive devices with predetermined functionality. Nanoscale mes oporous materials present high surface-to-volume ratio and tailorable mesopores, which allow the incorporation of chemical functionalization to nanoacoustics. However, the presence of pores with sizes comparable to the acoustic wavelength is intuitively perceived as a major roadblock in nanoacoustics. Here we present multilayered nanoacoustic resonators based on mesoporous SiO$_2$ thin-films showing acoustic resonances in the 5-100 GHz range. We characterize the acoustic response of the system using coherent phonon generation experiments. Despite resonance wavelengths comparable to the pore size, we observe for the first time unexpectedly well-defined acoustic resonances with Q-factors around 10. Our results open the path to a promising platform for nanoacoustic sensing and reconfigurable acoustic nanodevices based on soft, inexpensive fabrication methods.
Morphology, structure and magnetic properties of nanocomposites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and alginic acid (AA) are studied. Magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the nanoparticles capped with alginic acid exhibit very distinct properties. The c hemical bonding between alginic acid and surface of magnetite nanoparticles results in recovery of surface magnetization. On the other hand, it also leads to enhanced surface spin disorder and unconventional behavior of magnetization observed in Fe3O4-AA nanocomposites at low temperatures.
The controlled self-assembly of thiol stabilized gold nanocrystals in a mediating solvent and confined within mesoporous alumina was probed in situ with small angle x-ray scattering. The evolution of the self-assembly process was controlled reversibl y via regulated changes in the amount of solvent condensed from an undersaturated vapor. Analysis indicated that the nanoparticles self-assembled into cylindrical monolayers within the porous template. Nanoparticle nearest-neighbor separation within the monolayer increased and the ordering decreased with the controlled addition of solvent. The process was reversible with the removal of solvent. Isotropic clusters of nanoparticles were also observed to form temporarily during desorption of the liquid solvent and disappeared upon complete removal of liquid. Measurements of the absorption and desorption of the solvent showed strong hysteresis upon thermal cycling. In addition, the capillary filling transition for the solvent in the nanoparticle-doped pores was shifted to larger chemical potential, relative to the liquid/vapor coexistence, by a factor of 4 as compared to the expected value for the same system without nanoparticles.
