Driven diffusive systems constitute paradigmatic models of nonequilibrium physics. Among them, a driven lattice gas known as the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is the most prominent example for which many intriguing exact results have been obtained. After summarizing key findings, including the mapping of the ASEP to quantum spin chains, we discuss the recently introduced Brownian asymmetric simple exclusion process (BASEP) as a related class of driven diffusive system with continuous space dynamics. In the BASEP, driven Brownian motion of hardcore-interacting particles through one-dimensional periodic potentials is considered. We study whether current-density relations of the BASEP can be considered as generic for arbitrary periodic potentials and whether repulsive particle interactions other than hardcore lead to similar results. Our findings suggest that shapes of current-density relations are generic for single-well periodic potentials and can always be attributed to the interplay of a barrier reduction, blocking and exchange symmetry effect. This implies that in general up to five different phases of nonequilibrium steady states are possible for such potentials. The phases can occur in systems coupled to particle reservoirs, where the bulk density is the order parameter. For multiple-well periodic potentials, more complex current-density relations are possible and more phases can appear. Taking a repulsive Yukawa potential as an example, we show that the effects of barrier reduction and blocking on the current are also present. The exchange symmetry effect requires hardcore interactions and we demonstrate that it can still be identified when hardcore interactions are combined with weak Yukawa interactions.

Discontinuous phase transitions out of equilibrium can be characterized by the behavior of macroscopic stochastic currents. But while much is known about the the average current, the situation is much less understood for higher statistics. In this pa per, we address the consequences of the diverging metastability lifetime -- a hallmark of discontinuous transitions -- in the fluctuations of arbitrary thermodynamic currents, including the entropy production. In particular, we center our discussion on the emph{conditional} statistics, given which phase the system is in. We highlight the interplay between integration window and metastability lifetime, which is not manifested in the average current, but strongly influences the fluctuations. We introduce conditional currents and find, among other predictions, their connection to average and scaled variance through a finite-time version of Large Deviation Theory and a minimal model. Our results are then further verified in two paradigmatic models of discontinuous transitions: Schlogls model of chemical reactions, and a $12$-states Potts model subject to two baths at different temperatures.
Driven surface diffusion occurs, for example, in molecular beam epitaxy when particles are deposited under an oblique angle. Elastic phase transitions happen when normal modes in crystals become soft due to the vanishing of certain elastic constants. We show that these seemingly entirely disparate systems fall under appropriate conditions into the same universality class. We derive the field theoretic Hamiltonian for this universality class, and we use renormalized field theory to calculate critical exponents and logarithmic corrections for several experimentally relevant quantities.
Single-file transport in pore-like structures constitute an important topic for both theory and experiment. For hardcore interacting particles, a good understanding of the collective dynamics has been achieved recently. Here we study how softness in the particle interaction affects the emergent transport behavior. To this end, we investigate driven Brownian motion of particles in a periodic potential. The particles interact via a repulsive softcore potential with a shape corresponding to a smoothed rectangular barrier. This shape allows us to elucidate effects of mutual particle penetration and particle crossing in a controlled manner. We find that even weak deviations from the hardcore case can have a strong impact on the particle current. Despite of this fact, the knowledge about the transport in a corresponding hardcore system is shown to be useful to describe and interpret our findings for the softcore case. This is achieved by assigning a thermodynamic effective size to the particles based on the equilibrium density functional of hard spheres.
We study two interacting identical run and tumble particles (RTPs) in one dimension. Each particle is driven by a telegraphic noise, and in some cases, also subjected to a thermal white noise with a corresponding diffusion constant $D$. We are intere sted in the stationary bound state formed by the two RTPs in the presence of a mutual attractive interaction. The distribution of the relative coordinate $y$ indeed reaches a steady state that we characterize in terms of the solution of a second-order differential equation. We obtain the explicit formula for the stationary probability $P(y)$ of $y$ for two examples of interaction potential $V(y)$. The first one corresponds to $V(y) sim |y|$. In this case, for $D=0$ we find that $P(y)$ contains a delta function part at $y=0$, signaling a strong clustering effect, together with a smooth exponential component. For $D>0$, the delta function part broadens, leading instead to weak clustering. The second example is the harmonic attraction $V(y) sim y^2$ in which case, for $D=0$, $P(y)$ is supported on a finite interval. We unveil an interesting relation between this two-RTP model with harmonic attraction and a three-state single RTP model in one dimension, as well as with a four-state single RTP model in two dimensions. We also provide a general discussion of the stationary bound state, including examples where it is not unique, e.g., when the particles cannot cross due to an additional short-range repulsion.

We present a comprehensive study of the phase transitions in the single-field reaction-diffusion stochastic systems with field-dependent mobility of a power-low form and the internal fluctuations. Using variational principles and mean-field theory it was shown that the noise can sustain spatial patterns and leads to disordering phase transitions. We have shown that the phase transitions can be of critical or non-critical character.
