Polynomials with coefficients in ${-1,1}$ are called Littlewood polynomials. Using special properties of the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials and classical results in approximation theory such as Jacksons Theorem, de la Vallee Poussin sums, Bernsteins inequality, Rieszs Lemma, divided differences, etc., we give a significantly simplified proof of a recent breakthrough result by Balister, Bollobas, Morris, Sahasrabudhe, and Tiba stating that there exist absolute constants $eta_2 > eta_1 > 0$ and a sequence $(P_n)$ of Littlewood polynomials $P_n$ of degree $n$ such that $$eta_1 sqrt{n} leq |P_n(z)| leq eta_2 sqrt{n},, qquad z in mathbb{C},, , , |z| = 1,,$$ confirming a conjecture of Littlewood from 1966. Moreover, the existence of a sequence $(P_n)$ of Littlewood polynomials $P_n$ is shown in a way that in addition to the above flatness properties a certain symmetry is satisfied by the coefficients of $P_n$ making the Littlewood polynomials $P_n$ close to skew-reciprocal.

The complex or non-hermitian orthogonal polynomials with analytic weights are ubiquitous in several areas such as approximation theory, random matrix models, theoretical physics and in numerical analysis, to mention a few. Due to the freedom in the c hoice of the integration contour for such polynomials, the location of their zeros is a priori not clear. Nevertheless, numerical experiments, such as those presented in this paper, show that the zeros not simply cluster somewhere on the plane, but persistently choose to align on certain curves, and in a very regular fashion. The problem of the limit zero distribution for the non-hermitian orthogonal polynomials is one of the central aspects of their theory. Several important results in this direction have been obtained, especially in the last 30 years, and describing them is one of the goals of the first parts of this paper. However, the general theory is far from being complete, and many natural questions remain unanswered or have only a partial explanation. Thus, the second motivation of this paper is to discuss some mysterious configurations of zeros of polynomials, defined by an orthogonality condition with respect to a sum of exponential functions on the plane, that appeared as a results of our numerical experiments. In this apparently simple situation the zeros of these orthogonal polynomials may exhibit different behaviors: for some of them we state the rigorous results, while other are presented as conjectures (apparently, within a reach of modern techniques). Finally, there are cases for which it is not yet clear how to explain our numerical results, and where we cannot go beyond an empirical discussion.

We introduce a family of rings of symmetric functions depending on an infinite sequence of parameters. A distinguished basis of such a ring is comprised by analogues of the Schur functions. The corresponding structure coefficients are polynomials in the parameters which we call the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials. We give a combinatorial rule for their calculation by modifying an earlier result of B. Sagan and the author. The new rule provides a formula for these polynomials which is manifestly positive in the sense of W. Graham. We apply this formula for the calculation of the product of equivariant Schubert classes on Grassmannians which implies a stability property of the structure coefficients. The first manifestly positive formula for such an expansion was given by A. Knutson and T. Tao by using combinatorics of puzzles while the stability property was not apparent from that formula. We also use the Littlewood-Richardson polynomials to describe the multiplication rule in the algebra of the Casimir elements for the general linear Lie algebra in the basis of the quantum immanants constructed by A. Okounkov and G. Olshanski.

A fibration of ${mathbb R}^n$ by oriented copies of ${mathbb R}^p$ is called skew if no two fibers intersect nor contain parallel directions. Conditions on $p$ and $n$ for the existence of such a fibration were given by Ovsienko and Tabachnikov. A cl assification of smooth fibrations of ${mathbb R}^3$ by skew oriented lines was given by Salvai, in analogue with the classification of oriented great circle fibrations of $S^3$ by Gluck and Warner. We show that Salvais classification has a topological variation which generalizes to characterize all continuous fibrations of ${mathbb R}^n$ by skew oriented copies of ${mathbb R}^p$. We show that the space of fibrations of ${mathbb R}^3$ by skew oriented lines deformation retracts to the subspace of Hopf fibrations, and therefore has the homotopy type of a pair of disjoint copies of $S^2$. We discuss skew fibrations in the complex and quaternionic setting and give a necessary condition for the existence of a fibration of ${mathbb C}^n$ (${mathbb H}^n$) by skew oriented copies of ${mathbb C}^p$ (${mathbb H}^p$).
We consider random polynomials whose coefficients are independent and uniform on {-1,1}. We prove that the probability that such a polynomial of degree n has a double root is o(n^{-2}) when n+1 is not divisible by 4 and asymptotic to $frac{8sqrt{3}}{ pi n^2}$ otherwise. This result is a corollary of a more general theorem that we prove concerning random polynomials with independent, identically distributed coefficients having a distribution which is supported on { -1, 0, 1} and whose largest atom is strictly less than 1/sqrt{3}. In this general case, we prove that the probability of having a double root equals the probability that either -1, 0 or 1 are double roots up to an o(n^{-2}) factor and we find the asymptotics of the latter probability.
We provide a non-recursive, combinatorial classification of multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials. These polynomials are $GL_n$, and $SL_n$, characters of the skew Schur modules. Our result extends work of H. Thomas--A. Yong, and C. Gutschwager, i n which they classify the multiplicity-free skew Schur functions.
