We consider the problem of conditional independence testing of $X$ and $Y$ given $Z$ where $X,Y$ and $Z$ are three real random variables and $Z$ is continuous. We focus on two main cases - when $X$ and $Y$ are both discrete, and when $X$ and $Y$ are both continuous. In view of recent results on conditional independence testing (Shah and Peters, 2018), one cannot hope to design non-trivial tests, which control the type I error for all absolutely continuous conditionally independent distributions, while still ensuring power against interesting alternatives. Consequently, we identify various, natural smoothness assumptions on the conditional distributions of $X,Y|Z=z$ as $z$ varies in the support of $Z$, and study the hardness of conditional independence testing under these smoothness assumptions. We derive matching lower and upper bounds on the critical radius of separation between the null and alternative hypotheses in the total variation metric. The tests we consider are easily implementable and rely on binning the support of the continuous variable $Z$. To complement these results, we provide a new proof of the hardness result of Shah and Peters.

This paper studies the minimax rate of nonparametric conditional density estimation under a weighted absolute value loss function in a multivariate setting. We first demonstrate that conditional density estimation is impossible if one only requires t hat $p_{X|Z}$ is smooth in $x$ for all values of $z$. This motivates us to consider a sub-class of absolutely continuous distributions, restricting the conditional density $p_{X|Z}(x|z)$ to not only be Holder smooth in $x$, but also be total variation smooth in $z$. We propose a corresponding kernel-based estimator and prove that it achieves the minimax rate. We give some simple examples of densities satisfying our assumptions which imply that our results are not vacuous. Finally, we propose an estimator which achieves the minimax optimal rate adaptively, i.e., without the need to know the smoothness parameter values in advance. Crucially, both of our estimators (the adaptive and non-adaptive ones) impose no assumptions on the marginal density $p_Z$, and are not obtained as a ratio between two kernel smoothing estimators which may sound like a go to approach in this problem.
We consider exact asymptotics of the minimax risk for global testing against sparse alternatives in the context of high dimensional linear regression. Our results characterize the leading order behavior of this minimax risk in several regimes, uncove ring new phase transitions in its behavior. This complements a vast literature characterizing asymptotic consistency in this problem, and provides a useful benchmark, against which the performance of specific tests may be compared. Finally, we provide some preliminary evidence that popular sparsity adaptive procedures might be sub-optimal in terms of the minimax risk.

We congratulate Engelke and Hitz on a thought-provoking paper on graphical models for extremes. A key contribution of the paper is the introduction of a novel definition of conditional independence for a multivariate Pareto distribution. Here, we out line a proposal for independence and conditional independence of general random variables whose support is a general set Omega in multidimensional real number space. Our proposal includes the authors definition of conditional independence, and the analogous definition of independence as special cases. By making our proposal independent of the context of extreme value theory, we highlight the importance of the authors contribution beyond this particular context.
We treat the problem of testing independence between m continuous variables when m can be larger than the available sample size n. We consider three types of test statistics that are constructed as sums or sums of squares of pairwise rank correlation s. In the asymptotic regime where both m and n tend to infinity, a martingale central limit theorem is applied to show that the null distributions of these statistics converge to Gaussian limits, which are valid with no specific distributional or moment assumptions on the data. Using the framework of U-statistics, our result covers a variety of rank correlations including Kendalls tau and a dominating term of Spearmans rank correlation coefficient (rho), but also degenerate U-statistics such as Hoeffdings $D$, or the $tau^*$ of Bergsma and Dassios (2014). As in the classical theory for U-statistics, the test statistics need to be scaled differently when the rank correlations used to construct them are degenerate U-statistics. The power of the considered tests is explored in rate-optimality theory under Gaussian equicorrelation alternatives as well as in numerical experiments for specific cases of more general alternatives.
We derive independence tests by means of dependence measures thresholding in a semiparametric context. Precisely, estimates of phi-mutual informations, associated to phi-divergences between a joint distribution and the product distribution of its mar gins, are derived through the dual representation of phi-divergences. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimates are established, including consistency, asymptotic distributions and large deviations principle. The obtained tests of independence are compared via their relative asymptotic Bahadur efficiency and numerical simulations. It follows that the proposed semiparametric Kullback-Leibler Mutual information test is the optimal one. On the other hand, the proposed approach provides a new method for estimating the Kullback-Leibler mutual information in a semiparametric setting, as well as a model selection procedure in large class of dependency models including semiparametric copulas.
