The interest in Fe-chalcogenide unconventional superconductors is intense after the critical temperature of FeSe was reported enhanced by more than one order of magnitude in the monolayer limit at the interface to an insulating oxide substrate. In heterostructures comprising interfaces of FeSe with topological insulators, additional interesting physical phenomena is predicted to arise e.g. in form of {it topological superconductivity}. So far superconductive properties of Fe-chalcogenide monolayers were mostly studied by local scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, which can detect pseudo-gaps in the density of states as an indicator for Cooper pairing. Direct macroscopic transport properties which can prove or falsify a superconducting phase were rarely reported due to the difficulty to grow films with homogeneous material properties. Here we report on a promising growth method to fabricate continuous carpets of monolayer thick FeSe on molecular beam epitaxy grown Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator thin films. In contrast to previous works using atomically flat cleaved bulk Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystal surfaces we observe a strong influence of the high step-edge density (terrace width about 10~nm) on MBE-grown Bi$_2$Se$_3$ substrates, which significantly promotes the growth of coalescing FeSe domains with small tetragonal crystal distortion without compromising the underlying Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystal structure.

SrxBi2Se3 is a candidate topological superconductor but its superconductivity requires the intercalation of Sr by into the van-der-Waals gaps of Bi2Se3. We report the synthesis of SrxBi2Se3 thin films by molecular beam epitaxy, and we characterize th eir structural, vibrational and electrical properties. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy show evidence of substitutional Sr alloying into the structure, while transport measurements allow us to correlate the increasing Sr content with an increased n-type doping, but do not reveal superconductivity down to 1.5K. Our results suggest that Sr predominantly occupies sites within a quintuple layer, simultaneously substituting for Bi and as an interstitial. Our results motivate future density functional studies to further investigate the energetics of Sr substitution into Bi2Se3.
Epitaxial titanium diboride thin films have been deposited on sapphire substrates by Pulsed Laser Ablation technique. Structural properties of the films have been studied during the growth by Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) and ex -situ by means of X-ray diffraction techniques; both kinds of measurements indicate a good crystallographic orientation of the TiB2 film both in plane and along the c axis. A flat surface has been observed by Atomic Force Microscopy imaging. Electrical resistivity at room temperature resulted to be five times higher than the value reported for single crystals. The films resulted to be also very stable at high temperature, which is very promising for using this material as a buffer layer in the growth of magnesium diboride thin films.
The double perovskite Sr2CrReO6 is an interesting material for spintronics, showing ferrimagnetism up to 635 K with a predicted high spin polarization of about 86%. We fabricated Sr2CrReO6 epitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Phase-pure films with optimum crystallographic and magnetic properties were obtained by growing at a substrate temperature of 700 degree C in pure O2 of 6.6x10-4 mbar. The films are c-axis oriented, coherently strained, and show less than 20% anti-site defects. The magnetization curves reveal high saturation magnetization of 0.8 muB per formula unit and high coercivity of 1.1 T, as well as a strong magnetic anisotropy.
The metastable orthorhombic phase of hafnia is generally obtained in polycrystalline films, whereas in epitaxial films, its formation has been much less investigated. We have grown Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films by pulsed laser deposition, and the growth window (temperature and oxygen pressure during deposition and film thickness) for epitaxial stabilization of the ferroelectric phase is mapped. The remnant ferroelectric polarization, up to around 24 uC/cm2, depends on the amount of orthorhombic phase and interplanar spacing and increases with temperature and pressure for a fixed film thickness. The leakage current decreases with an increase in thickness or temperature, or when decreasing oxygen pressure. The coercive electric field (EC) depends on thickness (t) according to the coercive electric field (Ec) - thickness (t)-2/3 scaling, which is observed for the first time in ferroelectric hafnia, and the scaling extends to thicknesses down to around 5 nm. The proven ability to tailor the functional properties of high-quality epitaxial ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films paves the way toward understanding their ferroelectric properties and prototyping devices.

Magnetite thin fims have been grown epitaxially on ZnO and MgO substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The film quality was found to be strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure during growth. Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties were analyzed utilizing Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES), Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD). Diffraction patterns show clear indication for growth in the (111) direction on ZnO. Vertical structure analysis by HAXPES depth profiling revealed uniform magnetite thin films on both type of substrates. Both, MOKE and XMCD measurements show in-plane easy magnetization with a reduced magnetic moment in case of the films on ZnO.
