A model of a mixture of spinless fermions and spin-zero hardcore bosons, with filling fractions $rho_F$ and $rho_B$, respectively, on a two-dimensional square lattice with {em composite} hopping $t$ is presented. In this model, hopping swaps the locations of a fermion and a boson at nearest-neighbor sites. When $rho_F+rho_B=1$, the fermion hopping amplitude $phi$ and boson superfluid amplitude $psi$ are calculated in the ground state within a mean-field approximation. The Fermi sector is insulating ($phi=0$) and the Bose sector is normal ($psi=0$) for $0 le rho_F < rho_c$. The model has {em coupled first-order} transitions at $rho_F = rho_c simeq 0.3$ where both $phi$ and $psi$ are discontinuous. The Fermi sector is metallic ($phi>0$) and the Bose sector is superfluid ($psi>0$) for $rho_c < rho_F < 1$. At $rho_F=1/2$, fermion density of states $rho$ has a van Hove singularity, the bulk modulus $kappa$ displays a cusp-like singularity, the system has a density wave (DW) order, and $phi$ and $psi$ are maximum. At $rho_F=rho_{kappa} simeq 0.81$, $kappa$ vanishes, becoming {em negative} for $rho_{kappa}<rho_F<1$. The role of composite hopping in the evolution of Fermi band dispersions and Fermi surfaces as a function of $rho_F$ is highlighted. The estimate for BEC critical temperature is in the subkelvin range for ultracold atom systems and several hundred kelvins for possible solid-state examples of the model.

The recent experimental realization of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases has opened new perspectives in the study of quantum many-body systems. Depending on the values of the scattering lengths and the amount of bosons a nd fermions, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is predicted to exhibit a fully mixed phase, a fully separated phase or, in addition, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase. The occurrence of this intermediate configuration has interesting consequences when the system is nonuniform. In this work we theoretically investigate the case of solitonic solutions of coupled Bogoliubov-de Gennes and Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the fermionic and bosonic components, respectively. We show that, in the partially separated phase, a dark soliton in Fermi superfluid is accompanied by a broad bosonic component in the soliton, forming a dark-bright soliton which keeps full spatial coherence.
We study a generalization of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, combining both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic two-body interactions, that hosts exact global and local Z2 gauge symmetries. Using exact diagonalization and stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo methods, we confirm the existence of the topological phase in line with previous theoretical predictions. Our simulation results show that the transition between the confined topological phase and the deconfined paramagnetic phase is of first-order, in contrast to the conventional Z2 lattice gauge model in which the transition maps onto that of the standard Ising model and is continuous. We further generalize the model by replacing the transverse field on the gauge spins with a ferromagnetic XX interaction while keeping the local gauge symmetry intact. We find that the Z2 topological phase remains stable, while the paramagnetic phase is replaced by a ferromagnetic phase. The topological-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition is also of first-order. For both models, we discuss the low-energy spinon and vison excitations of the topological phase and their avoided level crossings associated with the first-order quantum phase transitions.
We investigate magnetoassociation of ultracold fermionic Feshbach molecules in a mixture of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms, where we can create as many as $7times 10^4$ $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules with a conversion efficiency as high as 45%. In the per turbative regime, we find that the conversion efficiency depends linearly on the density overlap of the two gases, with a slope that matches a parameter-free model that uses only the atom masses and the known Feshbach resonance parameters. In the saturated regime, we find that the maximum number of Feshbach molecules depends on the atoms phase-space density. At higher temperatures, our measurements agree with a phenomenological model that successfully describes the formation of bosonic molecules from either Bose or Fermi gases. However, for quantum degenerate atom gas mixtures, we measure significantly fewer molecules than this model predicts.

We demonstrate a general gauging procedure of a pure matter theory on a lattice with a mixture of subsystem and global symmetries. This mixed symmetry can be either a semidirect product of a subsystem symmetry and a global symmetry, or a non-trivial extension of them. We demonstrate this gauging procedure on a cubic lattice in three dimensions with four examples: $G=mathbb{Z}_3^{text{sub}} rtimes mathbb{Z}_2^{text{glo}}$, $G=(mathbb{Z}_2^{text{sub}} times mathbb{Z}_2^{text{sub}}) rtimes mathbb{Z}_2^{text{glo}}$, $1to mathbb {Z}_2^text {sub}to Gto mathbb {Z}_2^text {glo}to 1$, and $1to mathbb {Z}_2^text {sub}to Gto K_4^text {glo}to 1$. The former two cases and the last one produce the non-Abelian fracton orders. Our construction of the gauging procedure provides an identification of the electric charges of these fracton orders with irreducible representations of the symmetry. Furthermore, by constraining the local Hilbert space, the magnetic fluxes with different geometry (tube-like and plaquette-like) satisfy a subalgebra of the quantum double models (QDMs). This algebraic structure leads to an identification of the magnetic fluxes to the conjugacy classes of the symmetry.
The superfluid mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi species is a remarkable many-body quantum system. Dilute degenerate atomic gases, especially for two species of distinct masses, are excellent candidates for exploring fundamental features of super fluid mixture. However, producing a mass-imbalance Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, providing an unambiguous visual proof of two-species superfluidity and probing inter-species interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we report the realization of a two-species superfluid of lithium-6 and potassium-41. By rotating the dilute gases, we observe the simultaneous existence of vortex lattices in both species, and thus present a definitive visual evidence for the simultaneous superfluidity of the two species. Pronounced effects of the inter-species interaction are demonstrated through a series of precision measurements on the formation and decay of two-species vortices. Our system provides a new platform for studying novel macroscopic quantum phenomena in vortex matter of interacting species.
