The group theoretical description of the periodic system of elements in the framework of the Rumer-Fet model is considered. We introduce the concept of a single quantum system, the generating core of which is an abstract $C^ast$-algebra. It is shown that various concrete implementations of the operator algebra depend on the structure of generators of the fundamental symmetry group attached to the energy operator. In the case of generators of the complex shell of a group algebra of a conformal group, the spectrum of states of a single quantum system is given in the framework of the basic representation of the Rumer-Fet group, which leads to a group-theoretic interpretation of the Mendeleevs periodic system of elements. A mass formula is introduced that allows to give the termwise mass splitting for the main multiplet of the Rumer-Fet group. The masses of elements of the Seaborg table (eight-periodic extension of the Mendeleev table) are calculated starting from the atomic number $Z=121$ to $Z=220$. The continuation of Seaborg homology between lanthanides and actinides is established to the group of superactinides. A 10-periodic extension of the periodic table is introduced in the framework of the group-theoretic approach. The multiplet structure of the extended table periods is considered in detail. It is shown that the period lengths of the system of elements are determined by the structure of the basic representation of the Rumer-Fet group. The theoretical masses of the elements of 10th and 11th periods are calculated starting from $Z=221$ to $Z=364$. The concept of hypertwistor is introduced.

We show that the dependence of the total energy of the atoms on their atomic number follows a q-exponential (function proposed by C. Tsallis), for almost all elements of the periodic table. The result is qualitatively explained in terms of the way th e atomic configurations are arranged to minimize energy.

One of the most important advances in our understanding of the physical world arose from the unification of 3-dimensional space with 1-dimensional time into a 4-dimensional spacetime. Many other physical concepts also arise in similar 3+1 relationshi ps, and attempts have been made to unify some of these also. Examples in particle physics include the three intermediate vector bosons of the weak interaction, and the single photon of electromagnetism. The accepted unification in this case is the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model of electro-weak interactions, which forms part of the standard model. Another example is the three colours of quarks and one of leptons. In this case, the Pati-Salam model attempts the unification, but is not currently part of the accepted standard model. I investigate these and other instances of 3+1=4 in fundamental physics, to see if a comparison between the successful and unsuccessful unifications can throw some light on why some succeed and others fail. In particular, I suggest that applying the group-theoretical methods of the more successful unifications to the less successful ones could potentially break the logjam in theoretical particle physics.
In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbe ck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.
Carbene-Metal-Amide light-emitting diodes have recently shown internal quantum efficiencies approaching 100%, and there has been substantial debate concerning the cause of their exceptionally high efficiency. Here we present a theoretical description of CMAs, showing how a simple three-atom model can predict the form of the HOMO and LUMO, determine the polarization of transitions and the feasibility of spin-orbit coupling, as well as the qualitative dependence of excited state energies and oscillator strength on the twist angle. These results clarify many of the claims concerning CMAs and pave the way for the design of more efficient devices.
We investigate the theoretical description of the central exclusive production process, $h_1 + h_2 to h_1+X+h_2$. Taking Higgs production as an example, we compute the subset of next-to-leading order corrections sensitive to the Sudakov factor appear ing in the process. Our results agree with those originally presented by Khoze, Martin and Ryskin except that the scale appearing in the Sudakov factor, $mu=0.62 sqrt{hat{s}}$, should be replaced with $mu=sqrt{hat{s}}$, where $sqrt{hat{s}}$ is the invariant mass of the centrally produced system. We show that the replacement leads to approximately a factor 2 suppression in the cross-section for central system masses in the range 100--500GeV.
