In quantum gravity it is generally thought that a modified commutator of the form $[{hat x}, {hat p}] = i hbar (1 + beta p^2)$ is sufficient to give rise to a minimum length scale. We test this assumption and find that different pairs of modified operators can lead to the same modified commutator and yet give different or even no minimal length. The conclusion is that the modification of the operators is the main factor in determining whether there is a minimal length. This fact - that it is the specific form of the modified operators which determine the existence or not of a minimal length scale - can be used to keep or reject specific modifications of the position and momentum operators in theory of quantum gravity.

A new generalization of the Hawking-Hayward quasilocal energy to scalar-tensor gravity is proposed without assuming symmetries, asymptotic flatness, or special spacetime metrics. The procedure followed is simple but powerful and consists of writing t he scalar-tensor field equations as effective Einstein equations and then applying the standard definition of quasilocal mass.
In this paper we analyze the gravitational field of a global monopole in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. More precisely, we show that the field equations obtained are expressed in terms of $F(R)=frac{df(R)}{dR}$. Since we are dealing with a sphericall y symmetric system, we assume that $F(R)$ is a function of the radial coordinate only. Moreover, adopting the weak field approximation, we can provide all components of the metric tensor. A comparison with the corresponding results obtained in General Relativity and in the Brans-Dicke theory is also made.
We study a deSitter/Anti-deSitter/Poincare Yang-Mills theory of gravity in d-space-time dimensions in an attempt to retain the best features of both general relativity and Yang-Mills theory: quadratic curvature, dimensionless coupling and background independence. We derive the equations of motion for Lie algebra valued scalars and show that in the geometric optics limit they traverse geodesics with respect to the Lorentzian geometry determined by the frame fields. Mixing between components appears to next to leading order in the WKB approximation. We then restrict to two space-time dimensions for simplicity, in which case the theory reduces to the well known Katanaev-Volovich model. We complete the Hamiltonian analysis of the vacuum theory and use it to prove a generalized Birkhoff theorem. There are two classes of solutions: with torsion and without torsion. The former are parametrized by two constants of motion, have event horizons for certain ranges of the parameters and a curvature singularity. The latter yield a unique solution, up to diffeomorphisms, that describes a space constant curvature .
In the context of the recently proposed type-II minimally modified gravity theory, i.e. a metric theory of gravity with two local physical degrees of freedom that does not possess an Einstein frame, we study spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to explore the strong gravity regime. Despite the absence of extra degrees of freedom in the gravity sector, the vacuum solutions are locally different from the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric in general and thus the Birkhoff theorem does not hold. The general solutions are parameterized by several free functions of time and admit regular trapping and event horizons. Depending on the choice of the free functions of time, the null convergence condition may be violated in vacuum. Even in the static limit, while the solutions in this limit reduce to the Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS solutions, the effective cosmological constant deduced from the solutions is in general different from the cosmological value that is determined by the action. Nonetheless, once a set of suitable asymptotic conditions is imposed so that the solutions represent compact objects in the corresponding cosmological setup, the standard Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric is recovered and the effective cosmological constant agrees with the value inferred from the action.
The one-loop partition function of the $f(R,R_{mu u}R^{mu u})$ gravity theory is obtained around AdS$_4$ background. After suitable choice of the gauge condition and computation of the ghost determinant, we obtain the one-loop partition function of t he theory. The traced heat kernel over the thermal quotient of AdS$_4$ space is also computed and the thermal partition function is obtained for this theory. We have then consider quantum corrections to the thermodynamical quantities in some special cases.
