Cosmic voids, the underdense regions in the universe, are particularly sensitive to diffuse density components such as cosmic neutrinos. This sensitivity is enhanced by the match between void sizes and the free-streaming scale of massive neutrinos. Using the massive neutrino simulations texttt{MassiveNuS}, we investigate the effect of neutrino mass on dark matter halos as a function of environment. We find that the halo mass function depends strongly on neutrino mass and that this dependence is more pronounced in voids than in high-density environments. An observational program that measured the characteristic mass of the most massive halos in voids should be able to place novel constraints on the sum of the masses of neutrinos $sum m_ u$. The neutrino mass effect in the simulations is quite strong: In a 512$^3$ $h^{-3}$ Mpc$^3$ survey, the mean mass of the 1000 most massive halos in the void interiors is $(4.82 pm 0.11) times 10^{12} h^{-1}M_{odot}$ for $sum m_ u = 0.6$ eV and $(8.21 pm 0.13) times 10^{12} h^{-1}M_{odot}$ for $sum m_ u = 0.1$ eV. Subaru (SuMIRe), Euclid and WFIRST will have both spectroscopic and weak lensing surveys. Covering volumes at least 50 times larger than our simulations, they should be sensitive probes of neutrino mass through void substructure.

We forecast the sensitivity of thirty-five different combinations of future Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure data sets to cosmological parameters and to the total neutrino mass. We work under conservative assumptions accounting f or uncertainties in the modelling of systematics. In particular, for galaxy redshift surveys, we remove the information coming from non-linear scales. We use Bayesian parameter extraction from mock likelihoods to avoid Fisher matrix uncertainties. Our grid of results allows for a direct comparison between the sensitivity of different data sets. We find that future surveys will measure the neutrino mass with high significance and will not be substantially affected by potential parameter degeneracies between neutrino masses, the density of relativistic relics, and a possible time-varying equation of state of Dark Energy.
We compute the dark matter halo mass function using the excursion set formalism for a diffusive barrier with linearly drifting average which captures the main features of the ellipsoidal collapse model. We evaluate the non-Markovian corrections due t o the sharp filtering of the linear density field in real space with a path-integral method. We find an unprecedented agreement with N-body simulation data with deviations within ~5% level over the range of masses probed by the simulations. This indicates that the Excursion Set in combination with a realistic modelling of the collapse threshold can provide a robust estimation of the halo mass function.

In this paper we investigate how the halo mass function evolves with redshift, based on a suite of very large (with N_p = 3072^3 - 6000^3 particles) cosmological N-body simulations. Our halo catalogue data spans a redshift range of z = 0-30, allowing us to probe the mass function from the dark ages to the present. We utilise both the Friends-of-Friends (FOF) and Spherical Overdensity (SO) halofinding methods to directly compare the mass function derived using these commonly used halo definitions. The mass function from SO haloes exhibits a clear evolution with redshift, especially during the recent era of dark energy dominance (z < 1). We provide a redshift-parameterised fit for the SO mass function valid for the entire redshift range to within ~20% as well as a scheme to calculate the mass function for haloes with arbitrary overdensities. The FOF mass function displays a weaker evolution with redshift. We provide a `universal fit for the FOF mass function, fitted to data across the entire redshift range simultaneously, and observe redshift evolution in our data versus this fit. The relative evolution of the mass functions derived via the two methods is compared and we find that the mass functions most closely match at z=0. The disparity at z=0 between the FOF and SO mass functions resides in their high mass tails where the collapsed fraction of mass in SO haloes is ~80% of that in FOF haloes. This difference grows with redshift so that, by z>20, the SO algorithm finds a ~50-80% lower collapsed fraction in high mass haloes than does the FOF algorithm, due in part to the significant over-linking effects known to affect the FOF method.

We present a new theory for the hierarchical clustering of dark matter (DM) halos based on stochastic differential equations, that constitutes a change of perspective with respect to existing frameworks (e.g., the excursion set approach); this work i s specifically focused on the halo mass function. First, we present a stochastic differential equation that describes fluctuations in the mass growth of DM halos, as driven by a multiplicative white (Gaussian) noise dependent on the spherical collapse threshold and on the power spectrum of DM perturbations. We demonstrate that such a noise yields an average drift of the halo population toward larger masses, that quantitatively renders the standard hierarchical clustering. Then, we solve the Fokker-Planck equation associated to the stochastic dynamics, and obtain the Press & Schechter mass function as a (stationary) solution. Moreover, generalizing our treatment to a mass-dependent collapse threshold, we obtain an exact analytic solution capable of fitting remarkably well the N-body mass function over a wide range in mass and redshift. All in all, the new perspective offered by the theory presented here can contribute to better understand the gravitational dynamics leading to the formation, evolution and statistics of DM halos across cosmic times.
Using data from our Parkes & ATCA HI survey of six groups analogous to the Local Group, we find that the HI mass function and velocity distribution function for loose groups are the same as those for the Local Group. Both mass functions confirm that the missing satellite problem exists in other galaxy groups.
