Classification of matter through topological phases and topological edge states between distinct materials has been a subject of great interest recently. While lattices have been the main setting for these studies, a relatively unexplored realm for this physics is that of continuum fluids. In the typical case of a fluid model with a point spectrum, nontrivial topology and associated edge modes have been observed previously. However, another possibility is that a continuous spectrum can coexist with the point spectrum. Here we demonstrate that a fluid plasma model can harbor nontrivial topology within its continuous spectrum, and that there are boundary modes at the interface between topologically distinct regions. We consider the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. In the presence of magnetic shear, we find nontrivial topology in the Alfv{e}n continuum. For strong shear, the Chern number is $pm 1$, depending on the sign of the shear. If the magnetic shear changes sign within the plasma, a topological phase transition occurs, and bulk-boundary correspondence then suggests a mode localized to the layer of zero magnetic shear. We confirm the existence of this mode numerically. Moreover, this reversed-shear Alfv{e}n eigenmode (RSAE) is well known within magnetic fusion as it has been observed in several tokamaks. In examining how the MHD model might be regularized at small scales, we also consider the electron limit of Hall MHD. We show that the whistler band, which plays an important role in planetary ionospheres, has nontrivial topology. More broadly, this work raises the possibility that fusion devices could be carefully tailored to produce other topological states with potentially useful behavior.

A multi-institutional, multi-national science team will soon submit a NASA proposal to build a constellation of spacecraft to fly into the near-Earth solar wind in a swarm spanning a multitude of scales in order to obtain critically needed measuremen ts that will reveal the underlying dynamics of magnetized turbulence. This white paper, submitted to the Plasma 2020 Decadal Survey Committee, provides a brief overview of turbulent systems that constitute an area of compelling plasma physics research, including why this mission is needed, and how this mission will achieve the goal of revealing how energy is transferred across scales and boundaries in plasmas throughout the universe.

Wakefield particle acceleration in hollow plasma channels is under extensive study nowadays. Here we consider an externally magnetized plasma layer (external magnetic field of arbitrary magnitude is along the structure axis) and investigate wakefield s generated by a point charge passing along the layer axis.
The sheath formation in a weakly magnetized collisionless electronegative plasma consisting of electrons, negative and positive ions has been numerically investigated using the hydrodynamic equations. The electrons and negative ions are assumed to fo llow Boltzmann relation. A sheath formation criterion has been analytically derived. The paper focuses on studying the sheath structure by varying the electronegativity. It has been observed that the presence of negative ions has a substantial effect on the sheath structure. The observations made in the present work have profound significance on processing plasmas, especially in the semiconductor industry as well as in fusion studies.
Nonlinear axisymmetric cylindrical plasma oscillations in magnetized collisionless plasmas are a model for the electron fluid collapse on the axis behind an ultrashort relativisically intense laser pulse exciting a plasma wake wave. We present an ana lytical description of the strongly nonlinear oscillations showing that the magnetic field prevents closing of the cavity formed behind the laser pulse. This effect is demonstrated with 3D PIC simulations of the laser-plasma interaction. An analysis of the betatron oscillations of fast electrons in the presence of the magnetic field reveals a characteristic Four-Ray Star pattern which has been observed in the image of the electron bunch in experiments [T. Hosokai, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 075004 (2006)].
We consider backscattering of laser pulses in strongly-magnetized plasma mediated by kinetic magnetohydrodynamic waves. Magnetized low-frequency scattering, which can occur when the external magnetic field is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the laser propagation direction, provides an instability growth rate higher than Raman scattering and a frequency downshift comparable to Brillouin scattering. In addition to the high growth rate, which allows smaller plasmas, and the 0.1-2% frequency downshift, which permits a wide range of pump sources, MLF scattering is an ideal candidate for amplification because the process supports an extremely large bandwidth, which particle-in-cell simulations show produces ultrashort durations. Under some conditions, MLF scattering also becomes the dominant spontaneous backscatter instability, with implications for magnetized laser-confinement experiments.
