The single-photon scattering in a rectangular waveguide by a V-type three-level emitter is studied for large range of input-photon energy beyond the single-mode region. By using Lippmann-Schwinger formalism, the necessary and sufficient conditions of complete transmission and complete reflection are derived analytically. In the single-mode region, the complete transmission caused by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the complete reflection due to Fano resonance can both be achieved by adjusting the emitters parameters. But in the multi-mode region, except that the input-state is prepared in a coherent superposition state, the perfect reflection is absent, and the photon inevitably enters other propagation modes due to the indirectly interaction between waveguide modes mediated by the emitter. Other remarkable features in the photon transport induced by the finite cross section includes the blueshift of the reflection resonance and the cutoff-frequency effect.

We study a system made up of one or two two-level quantum emitters, coupled to a single transverse mode of a closed waveguide, in which photon wavenumbers and frequencies are discretized, and characterize the stable states in which one excitation is steadily shared between the field and the emitters. We unearth finite-size effects in the field-emitter interactions and identify a family of dressed states, that represent the forerunners of bound states in the continuum in the limit of an infinite waveguide. We finally consider the potential interest of such states for applications in the field of quantum information.

Strong nonlinear interactions between photons enable logic operations for both classical and quantum-information technology. Unfortunately, nonlinear interactions are usually feeble and therefore all-optical logic gates tend to be inefficient. A quan tum emitter deterministically coupled to a propagating mode fundamentally changes the situation, since each photon inevitably interacts with the emitter, and highly correlated many-photon states may be created . Here we show that a single quantum dot in a photonic-crystal waveguide can be utilized as a giant nonlinearity sensitive at the single-photon level. The nonlinear response is revealed from the intensity and quantum statistics of the scattered photons, and contains contributions from an entangled photon-photon bound state. The quantum nonlinearity will find immediate applications for deterministic Bell-state measurements and single-photon transistors and paves the way to scalable waveguide-based photonic quantum-computing architectures.
Quantum mechanical treatment of light inside dielectric media is important to understand the behavior of an optical system. In this paper, a two-level atom embedded in a rectangular waveguide surrounded by a perfect electric conductor is considered. Spontaneous emission, propagation, and detection of a photon are described by the second quantization formalism. The quantized modes for light are divided into two types: photonic propagating modes and localized modes with exponential decay along the direction of waveguide. Though spontaneous emission depends on all possible modes including the localized modes, detection far from the source only depends on the propagating modes. This discrepancy of dynamical behaviors gives two different decay rates along space and time in the correlation function of the photon detection.

Planar nanostructures allow near-ideal extraction of emission from a quantum emitter embedded within, thereby realizing deterministic single-photon sources. Such a source can be transformed into M single-photon sources by implementing active temporal -to-spatial mode demultiplexing. We report on the realization of such a demultiplexed source based on a quantum dot embedded in a nanophotonic waveguide. Efficient outcoupling (>60%) from the waveguide into a single mode optical fiber is obtained with high-efficiency grating couplers. As a proof-of-concept, active demultiplexing into M=4 spatial channels is demonstrated by the use of electro-optic modulators with an end-to-end efficiency of >81% into single-mode fibers. Overall we demonstrate four-photon coincidence rates of >1 Hz even under non-resonant excitation of the quantum dot. The main limitation of the current source is the residual population of other exciton transitions that corresponds to a finite preparation efficiency of the desired transition. We quantitatively extract a preparation efficiency of 15% using the second-order correlation function measurements. The experiment highlights the applicability of planar nanostructures as efficient multiphoton sources through temporal-to-spatial demultiplexing and lays out a clear path way of how to scale up towards demonstrating quantum advantages with the quantum dot sources.

Thermal rectification and heat amplification are investigated in a nonequilibrium V-type three-level system with quantum interference. By applying the Redfield master equation combined with full counting statistics, we analyze the steady state heat t ransport. The noise-induced interference is found to be able to rectify the heat current, which paves a new way to design quantum thermal rectifier. Within the three-reservoir setup, the heat amplification is clearly identified far-from equilibrium, which is in absence of the negative differential thermal conductance.
