We investigate the intrinsic magnon spin current in a noncollinear antiferromagnetic insulator. We introduce a definition of the magnon spin current in a noncollinear antiferromagnet and find that it is in general non-conserved, but for certain symmetries and spin polarizations the averaged effect of non-conserving terms can vanish. We formulate a general linear response theory for magnons in noncollinear antiferromagnets subject to a temperature gradient and analyze the effect of symmetries on the response tensor. We apply this theory to single-layer potassium iron jarosite KFe$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO$_4$)$_2$ and predict a measurable spin current response.

Temperature gradient in a ferromagnetic conductor may generate a spontaneous transverse voltage drop in the direction perpendicular to both magnetization and heat current. This anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been considered to be proportional to t he magnetization, and thus observed only in ferromagnets, while recent theories indicate that ANE provides a measure of the Berry curvature at the Fermi energy $E_{rm F}$. Here we report the observation of a large ANE at zero field in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn. Despite a very small magnetization $sim 0.002$ $mu_{rm B}/$Mn, the transverse Seebeck coefficient at zero field is $sim 0.35~mu$V/K at room temperature and reaches $sim 0.6~mu$V/K at 200 K, comparable with the maximum value known for a ferromagnetic metal. Our first-principles calculation reveals that the large ANE comes from a significantly enhanced Berry curvature associated with the Weyl points nearby $E_{rm F}$. The ANE is geometrically convenient for the thermoelectric power generation, as it enables a lateral configuration of the modules to efficiently cover the heat source. Our observation of the large ANE in an antiferromagnet paves a way to develop a new class of thermoelectric material using topological magnets to fabricate an efficient, densely integrated thermopile.
In the past, magnons have been shown to mediate thermal transport of spin in various systems. Here, we reveal that the fundamental coupling of scalar spin chirality, inherent to magnons, to the electronic degrees of freedom in the system can result i n the generation of sizeable orbital magnetization and thermal transport of orbital angular momentum. We demonstrate the emergence of the latter phenomenon of orbital Nernst effect by referring to the spin-wave Hamiltonian of kagome ferromagnets, predicting that in a wide range of systems the transverse current of orbital angular momentum carried by magnons in response to an applied temperature gradient can overshadow the accompanying spin current. We suggest that the discovered effect fundamentally correlates with the topological Hall effect of fluctuating magnets, and it can be utilized in magnonic devices for generating magnonic orbital torques.
The spin Hall effect allows generation of spin current when charge current is passed along materials with large spin orbit coupling. It has been recently predicted that heat current in a non-magnetic metal can be converted into spin current via a pro cess referred to as the spin Nernst effect. Here we report the observation of the spin Nernst effect in W. In W/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures, we find changes in the longitudinal and transverse voltages with magnetic field when temperature gradient is applied across the film. The field-dependence of the voltage resembles that of the spin Hall magnetoresistance. A comparison of the temperature gradient induced voltage and the spin Hall magnetoresistance allows direct estimation of the spin Nernst angle. We find the spin Nernst angle of W to be similar in magnitude but opposite in sign with its spin Hall angle. Interestingly, under an open circuit condition, such sign difference results in spin current generation larger than otherwise. These results highlight the distinct characteristics of the spin Nernst and spin Hall effects, providing pathways to explore materials with unique band structures that may generate large spin current with high efficiency.

Magnon spin Nernst effect was recently proposed as an intrinsic effect in antiferromagnets, where spin diffusion and boundary spin transmission have been ignored. However, diffusion processes are essential to convert a bulk spin current into boundary spin accumulation, which determines the spin injection rate into detectors through imperfect transmission. We formulate a diffusive theory of the magnon spin Nernst effect with boundary conditions reflecting real device geometry. Thanks to the diffusion effect, the output signals in both electronic and optical detection grow rapidly with an increasing system size in the transverse dimension, which eventually saturate. Counterintuitively, the measurable signals are even functions of magnetic field, yielding optical detection more reliable than electronic detection.

One of the main bottleneck issues for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic devices is the small signal read-out owing to the limited anisotropic magnetoresistance in antiferromagnets. However, this could be overcome by either utilizing the B erry-curvature-induced anomalous Hall resistance in noncollinear antiferromagnets or establishing tunnel junction devices based on effective manipulation of antiferromagnetic spins. In this work, we demonstrate the giant piezoelectric strain control of the spin structure and the anomalous Hall resistance in a noncollinear antiferromagnetic metal - D019 hexagonal Mn3Ga. Furthermore, we built tunnel junction devices with a diameter of 200 nm to amplify the maximum tunneling resistance ratio to more than 10% at room-temperature, which thus implies significant potential of noncollinear antiferromagnets for large signal-output and high-density antiferromagnetic spintronic device applications.
