With numerical simulations of the mW model of water, we investigate the energetic stability of crystalline clusters for both Ice I (cubic and hexagonal ice) and for the metastable Ice 0 phase as a function of the cluster size. Under a large variety of forming conditions, we find that the most stable cluster changes as a function of size: at small sizes the Ice 0 phase produces the most stable clusters, while at large sizes there is a crossover to Ice I clusters. We further investigate the growth of crystalline clusters with the seeding technique and study the growth patterns of different crystalline clusters. While energetically stable at small sizes, the growth of metastable phases (cubic and Ice 0) is hindered by the formation of coherent grain boundaries. A five-fold symmetric twin boundary for cubic ice, and a newly discovered coherent grain boundary in Ice 0, that promotes cross nucleation of cubic ice. Our work reveals that different local structures can compete with the stable phase in mW water, and that the low energy cost of particular grain boundaries might play an important role in polymorph selection.

We develop an explicit and tractable representation of a twist-grain-boundary phase of a smectic A liquid crystal. This allows us to calculate the interaction energy between grain boundaries and the relative contributions from the bending and compres sion deformations. We discuss the special stability of the 90 degree grain boundaries and discuss the relation of this structure to the Schwarz D surface.
The electronic Seebeck response in a conductor involves the energy-dependent mean free path of the charge carriers and is affected by crystal structure, scattering from boundaries and defects, and strain. Previous photothermoelectric (PTE) studies ha ve suggested that the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline metal nanowires are related to grain structure, though direct evidence linking crystal microstructure to the PTE response is difficult to elucidate. Here, we show that room temperature scanning PTE measurements are sensitive probes that can detect subtle changes in the local Seebeck coefficient of gold tied to the underlying defects and strain that mediate crystal deformation. This connection is revealed through a combination of scanning PTE and electron microscopy measurements of single crystal and bicrystal gold microscale devices. Unexpectedly, the photovoltage maps strongly correlate with gradually varying crystallographic misorientations detected by electron backscatter diffraction. The effects of individual grain boundaries and differing grain orientations on the PTE signal are minimal. This scanning PTE technique shows promise for identifying minor structural distortions in nanoscale materials and devices.
We reveal that phononic thermal transport in graphene is not immune to grain boundaries (GBs) aligned along the direction of the temperature gradient. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations uncover a large reduction in the phononic thermal co nductivity ($kappa_p$) along linear ultra-narrow GBs comprising periodically-repeating pentagon-heptagon dislocations. Greens function calculations and spectral energy density analysis indicate that $kappa_p$ is the complex manifestation of the periodic strain field, which behaves as a reflective diffraction grating with both diffuse and specular phonon reflections, and represents a source of anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. Our findings provide new insights into the integrity of the phononic thermal transport in GB graphene.

Nano-crystallize materials have been known for decades to potentially owe the novel self-healing ability for radiation damage, which has been demonstrated to be especially linked to preferential occupation of interstitials at grain boundary (GB) and promoted vacancy-interstitial annihilation. A major obstacle to better understanding the healing property is the lack of an atomistic picture of the interstitial states near GBs, due to severely separation of the timescale of interstitial segregation from other events and abundance of interstitials at the GB. Here, we report a generic self-blocking effect of the interstitial cluster (SIAn) near the metallic GB in W, Mo and Fe. Upon creating a SIAn near the GB, it is immediately trapped by the GB during the GB structural relaxation and blocks there, impeding GBs further spontaneous trapping of the SIAn in the vicinity and making these SIAns stuck nearby the GB. The SIAn in the stuck state surprisingly owes an exceptionally larger number of annihilation sites with vacancies near the GB than the SIAn trapped at the GB due to maintaining its bulk configuration basically. Besides, it also has an unexpectedly long-ranged repelling interaction with the SIA in the bulk region, which may further affect the GBs trap of the SIAn. The self-blocking effect might shed light on more critical and extended role of the GB in healing radiation-damage in NCs than previously recognized the GBs limited role based on GBs trap for the SIA and resulted vacancy-SIA recombination.

We show that despite the low anisotropy, strong vortex pinning and high irreversibility field Hirr close to the upper critical field Hc2 of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the critical current density Jgb across [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs) of thin film Ba(Fe 1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals is strongly depressed, similar to high-Tc cuprates. Our results suggest that weak-linked GBs are characteristic of both cuprates and pnictides because of competing orders, low carrier density, and unconventional pairing symmetry.
