We compute the $K$ and $L_{3}$ -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrum of the columnar and the staggered quantum dimer states accessible to the square lattice Heisenberg magnet. Utilizing a bond operator representation mean field theory we investigate the RIXS features of the one- and two-triplon excitation spectrum supported by the quantum dimer model in the background of condensed singlet excitation. We find that the two-triplon excitation boundary lies within a 124 (78) meV to (414) 345 meV energy range for the columnar (staggered) phase. We estimated the two-triplon gap to be 124 (78) meV for the columnar (staggered) dimer phase. The highest intensity of the $K$ -edge RIXS spectrum is centralized approximately around the $(pi/2,pi/2)$ point for both the columnar and the staggered phases. At the $L_{3}$ -edge we study the one- and two- triplon signal considering experimental scattering geometry, polarization restriction, and experimental resolution effects. Our calculations find an additional contribution to the two-triplon RIXS signal, not previously reported in the literature, that originates from the local hard-core dimer constraint. This leads to a finite non-zero signal at the (0,0) momentum transfer which can offer an explanation for the existing ladder RIXS experiments and also predicts a non-zero signal for the two-dimensional quantum dimer system. We find that the $L_3$ edge RIXS response of the one- and two-triplon signal could exist in antiphase rung modulation for zero and $pi$ as found in inelastic neutron scattering. We also consider static crystal twinning at the $L_3$ -edge RIXS signal to mimic realistic crystal effects. Since the disordered phase has the potential to harbor a variety of quantum paramagnetic states, our RIXS calculations provide useful signatures to identify the true nature of the ordering pattern.

We present calculations for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in edge-shared copper oxide systems, such as CuGeO$_{3}$ and Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$, appropriate for hard x-ray scattering where the photoexcited electron lies above oxygen 2p and copp er 3d orbital energies. We perform exact diagonalizations of the multi-band Hubbard and determine the energies, orbital character and resonance profiles of excitations which can be probed via RIXS. We find excellent agreement with recent results on Li$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$ and CuGeO$_{3}$ in the 2-7 eV photon energy loss range.
In our previous study, a single-branch of ferromagnetic magnon with linear dispersion is shown to exist near the (uncompensated) zigzag edge for Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. Here we develop a field-theory description for the edge magnon and find its dynamics is captured by the one-dimensional relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is intriguing that the boundary field theory for the edge magnon is tied up with its bulk counterpart, described by the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. Furthermore, we also reveal how the parity symmetry relates evanescent modes on opposite edges in a honeycomb nanoribbon. By employing alternative methods, including Schwinger bosons and density-matrix renormalization group, we also demonstrate that the relativistic edge magnon is robust even when the Neel order in the bulk is destroyed by quantum fluctuations. The edge magnon is a direct consequence of uncompensated edge and may be verified in realistic materials by experimental probes.
Based on the mapping between $s=1/2$ spin operators and hard-core bosons, we extend the cluster perturbation theory to spin systems and study the whole excitation spectrum of the antiferromagnetic $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattic e. In the Neel phase for $J_{2}lesssim0.4J_{1}$, in addition to the dominant magnon excitation, there is an obvious continuum close to $(pi,0)$ in the Brillouin zone indicating the deconfined spin-1/2 spinon excitations. In the stripe phase for $J_{2}gtrsim0.6J_{1}$, we find similar high-energy two-spinon continuums at $(pi/2,pi/2)$ and $(pi/2,pi)$, respectively. The intermediate phase is characterized by a spectrum with completely deconfined broad continuum, which is attributed to a $Z_{2}$ quantum spin liquid with the aid of a variational-Monte-Carlo analysis.
We obtain the most general forms of rank-2 and rank-3 tensors allowed by the crystal symmetries of the honeycomb lattice of edge-sharing octahedra for crystals belonging to different crystallographic point groups, including the monoclinic point group $2/m$ and the trigonal (or rhombohedral) point group $bar{3}$. Our results are relevant for two-dimensional materials, such as $alpha$-RuCl$_3$, CrI$_3$, and the honeycomb iridates. We focus on the magnetic-field-dependent thermal conductivity tensor $kappa_{ij}(mathbf{H})$, which describes a systems longitudinal and thermal Hall responses, for the cases when the magnetic field is applied along high-symmetry directions, perpendicular to the plane and in the plane. We highlight some unexpected results, such as the equality of fully-longitudinal components to partially-transverse components in rank-3 tensors for systems with three-fold rotational symmetry, and make testable predictions for the thermal conductivity tensor.
We present a study of the charge-transfer excitations in undoped Nd2CuO4 using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu K-edge. At the Brillouin zone center, azimuthal scans that rotate the incident-photon polarization within the CuO2 pla nes reveal weak fourfold oscillations. A comparison of spectra taken in different Brillouin zones reveals a spectral weight decrease at high energy loss from forward- to back-scattering. We show that these are scattered-photon polarization effects related to the properties of the observed electronic excitations. Each of the two effects constitutes about 10% of the inelastic signal while the 4p-as-spectator approximation describes the remaining 80%. Raman selection rules can accurately model our data, and we conclude that the observed polarization-dependent RIXS features correspond to Eg and B1g charge-transfer excitations to non-bonding oxygen 2p bands, above 2.5 eV energy-loss, and to an Eg d->d excitation at 1.65 eV.
