On complex algebraic varieties, height functions arising in combinatorial applications fail to be proper. This complicates the description and computation via Morse theory of key topological invariants. Here we establish checkable conditions under which the behavior at infinity may be ignored, and the usual theorems of classical and stratified Morse theory may be applied. This allows for simplified arguments in the field of analytic combinatorics in several variables, and forms the basis for new methods applying to problems beyond the reach of previous techniques.

We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the linear independence of solutions of differential equations for hyperlogarithms. The key fact is that the multiplier (i.e. the factor $M$ in the differential equation $dS=MS$) has only singulariti es of first order (Fuchsian-type equations) and this implies that they freely span a space which contains no primitive. We give direct applications where we extend the property of linear independence to the largest known ring of coefficients.

We show that the deletion theorem of a free arrangement is combinatorial, i.e., whether we can delete a hyperplane from a free arrangement keeping freeness depends only on the intersection lattice. In fact, we give an explicit sufficient and necessar y condition for the deletion theorem in terms of characteristic polynomials. This gives a lot of corollaries including the existence of free filtrations. The proof is based on the result about the form of minimal generators of a logarithmic derivation module of a multiarrangement which satisfies the $b_2$-equality.

The problem of prescribing conformally the scalar curvature of a closed Riemannian manifold as a given Morse function reduces to solving an elliptic partial differential equation with critical Sobolev exponent. Two ways of attacking this problem cons ist in subcritical approximations or negative pseudo gradient flows. We show under a mild none degeneracy assumption the equivalence of both approaches with respect to zero weak limits, in particular an one to one correspondence of zero weak limit finite energy subcritical blow-up solutions, zero weak limit critical points at infinity of negative type and sets of critical points with negative Laplacian of the function to be prescribed.
We present an algorithm to decide whether a given ideal in the polynomial ring contains a monomial without using Grobner bases, factorization or sub-resultant computations.

We illustrate an example of a generic, positive function K on a Riemannian manifold to be conformally prescribed as the scalar curvature, for which the corresponding Yamabe type L2-gradient flow exhibits non compact flow lines, while a slight modification of it is compact.
