We have investigated the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of Mn1/3NbS2 single crystals through x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect measurements. Mn1/3NbS2 displays a magnetic transition at TC ~ 45 K with highly anisotropic behavior expected for a hexagonal structured material. Below TC, neutron diffraction reveals increased scattering near the structural Bragg peaks having a wider Q-dependence along the c-axis than the nuclear Bragg peaks. This indicates helimagnetism with a long pitch length of ~250 nm (or a wavevector q~0.0025 {AA}-1) along the c-axis. This q is substantially smaller than that found for the helimagnetic state in isostructural Cr1/3NbS2 (0.015 {AA}-1). Specific heat capacity measurements confirm a second-order magnetic phase transition with a substantial magnetic contribution that persists to low temperature. The large low-temperature specific heat capacity is consistent with a large density of low-lying magnetic excitations that are likely associated with topologically interesting magnetic modes. Changes to the magnetoresistance, the magnetization, and the magnetic neutron diffraction, which become more apparent below 20 K, imply a modification in the character of the magnetic ordering corresponding to the magnetic contribution to the specific heat capacity. These observations signify a more complex magnetic structure both at zero and finite fields for Mn1/3NbS2 than for the well-investigated Cr1/3NbS2.

We have performed muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 at zero to low magnetic field. The transition from the paramagnetic to helical magnetically ordered phase at zero field is marke d by the onset of a coherent oscillation of the zero-field muon spin polarization below a critical temperature Tc. An enhancement of the muon spin precession frequency is observed below T ~ 50K, where anomalous behavior has been observed in bulk transport measurements. The enhanced precession frequency indicates a low-temperature modification of the helical magnetic structure. A Landau free energy analysis suggests that the low-temperature change in the magnetic structure is caused by a structural change, whereas the magnetic order above Tc is the result of an attractive interaction between the ferromagnetic moment induced by the applied field and the magnetic moments of the helical structure. We also suggest a longer periodicity of helicity below T ~ 50K, which can be verified by neutron scattering.
Topological states in quantum materials are defined by non-trivial topological invariants, such as the Chern number, which are properties of their bulk wave functions. A remarkable consequence of topological wave functions is the emergence of edge mo des, a phenomenon known as bulk-edge correspondence, that gives rise to quantized or chiral physical properties. While edge modes are widely presented as signatures of non-trivial topology, how bulk wave functions can manifest explicitly topological properties remains unresolved. Here, using high-resolution inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (IXS) combined with first principles calculations, we report experimental signatures of chiral wave functions in the bulk phonon spectrum of BaPtGe, which we show to host a previously undiscovered twofold degenerate quadruple Weyl node. The chirality of the degenerate phononic wave function yields a non-trivial phonon dynamical structure factor, S(Q,$omega$), along high-symmetry directions, that is in excellent agreement with numerical and model calculations. Our results establish IXS as a powerful tool to uncover topological wave functions, providing a key missing ingredient in the study of topological quantum matter.

The origin of the long-wavelength incommensurate magnetic structure of Ca3Co2O6 is discussed considering possible inter-chains super-superexchange paths. The experimental value of the propagation vector k=(0,0,$Delta$) with $Delta$ $>$ 1 can be repro duced only if one considers the next nearest super-superexchange interaction. A spin-dimer analysis using the Extended-Huckel Tight-Binding method confirms that, despite longer interatomic Co-Co distances, the latter interaction is indeed much stronger. The stability of the observed structure with respect to certain commensurate states is discussed.
An inelastic neutron scattering study of the lattice dynamics of the martensite phase of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy, Ni2MnGa, reveals the presence of well-defined phasons associated with the charge density wave (CDW) resulting from Fermi su rface (FS) nesting. The velocity and the temperature dependence of the phason are measured as well as the anomalous [110]-TA2 phonon.
The influence of magnetic dopants on the electronic and chemical environments in topological insulators (TIs) is a key factor when considering possible spintronic applications based on topological surface state properties. Here we provide spectroscop ic evidence for the presence of distinct chemical and electronic behavior for surface and bulk magnetic doping of Bi2Te3. The inclusion of Mn in the bulk of Bi2Te3 induces a genuine dilute ferromagnetic state, with reduction of the bulk band gap as the Mn content is increased. Deposition of Fe on the Bi2Te3 surface, on the other hand, favors the formation of iron telluride already at coverages as low as 0.07 monolayer, as a consequence of the reactivity of the Te-rich surface. Our results identify the factors that need to be controlled in the realization of magnetic nanosystems and interfaces based on TIs.
