Analytic arguments and numerical simulations show that bosonic ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) would form cored density distributions (`solitons) at the center of galaxies. ULDM solitons offer a promising way to exclude or detect ULDM by looking for a distinctive feature in the central region of galactic rotation curves. Baryonic contributions to the gravitational potential pose an obstacle to such analyses, being (i) dynamically important in the inner galaxy and (ii) highly non-spherical in rotation-supported galaxies, resulting in non-spherical solitons. We present an algorithm for finding the ground state soliton solution in the presence of stationary non-spherical background baryonic mass distribution. We quantify the impact of baryons on the predicted ULDM soliton in the Milky Way and in low surface-brightness galaxies from the SPARC database.

Bosonic ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) would form cored density distributions at the center of galaxies. These cores, seen in numerical simulations, admit analytic description as the lowest energy bound state solution (soliton) of the Schroedinger-Po isson equations. Numerical simulations of ULDM galactic halos found empirical scaling relations between the mass of the large-scale host halo and the mass of the central soliton. We discuss how the simulation results of different groups can be understood in terms of the basic properties of the soliton. Importantly, simulations imply that the energy per unit mass in the soliton and in the virialised host halo should be approximately equal. This relation lends itself to observational tests, because it predicts that the peak circular velocity, measured for the host halo in the outskirts of the galaxy, should approximately repeat itself in the central region. Contrasting this prediction to the measured rotation curves of well-resolved near-by galaxies, we show that ULDM in the mass range $msim (10^{-22}div 10^{-21})$ eV, which has been invoked as a possible solution to the small-scale puzzles of $Lambda$CDM, is in tension with the data. We suggest that a dedicated analysis of the Milky Way inner gravitational potential could probe ULDM up to $mlesssim 10^{-19}$ eV.

We show that cold dark matter particles interacting through a Yukawa potential could naturally explain the recently observed cores in dwarf galaxies without affecting the dynamics of objects with a much larger velocity dispersion, such as clusters of galaxies. The velocity dependence of the associated cross-section as well as the possible exothermic nature of the interaction alleviates earlier concerns about strongly interacting dark matter. Dark matter evaporation in low-mass objects might explain the observed deficit of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way halo and have important implications for the first galaxies and reionization.

Non-relativistic QCD axions or axion-like particles are among the most popular candidates for cold Dark Matter (DM) in the universe. We proposed to detect axion-like DM, using linearly polarized pulsar light as a probe. Because of birefringence effec t potentially caused by an oscillating galactic axion DM background, when pulsar light travels across the galaxy, its linear polarization angle may vary with time. With a soliton+NFW galactic DM density profile, we show that this strategy can potentially probe an axion-photon coupling as small as $sim 10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for axion mass $m_a sim 10^{-22}-10^{-20}$ eV, given the current measurement accuracy. An exclusion limit stronger than CAST ($ sim 10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$) and SN1987A ($ sim 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$) could be extended up to $m_a sim 10^{-18}$ eV and $sim 10^{-19}$ eV, respectively.
Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) is an attractive dark matter candidate motivated by small scale problems in astrophysics and with a rich phenomenology on those scales. We scrutinize the FDM model, more specifically the mass of the FDM particle, through a dyn amical analysis for the Galactic ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies. We use a sample of 18 UFDs to place the strongest constraints to date on the mass of the FDM particle, updating on previous bounds using a subset of the sample used here. We find that most of the sample UFDs prefer a FDM particle mass heavier than $10^{-21}mathrm{eV}$. In particular, Segue 1 provides the strongest constraint, with $m_psi=1.1^{+8.3}_{-0.7}times10^{-19}mathrm{eV}$. The constraints found here are the first that are compatible with various other independent cosmological and astrophysical bounds found in the literature, in particular with the latest bounds using the Lyman-$alpha$ forest. We also find that the constraints obtained in this work are not compatible with the bounds from luminous dwarf galaxies, as already pointed out in the previous work using UFDs. This could indicate that although a viable dark matter model, it might be challenging for the FDM model to solve the small scale problems.
We develop the framework for testing Lorentz invariance in the dark matter sector using galactic dynamics. We consider a Lorentz violating (LV) vector field acting on the dark matter component of a satellite galaxy orbiting in a host halo. We introdu ce a numerical model for the dynamics of satellites in a galactic halo and for a galaxy in a rich cluster to explore observational consequences of such an LV field. The orbital motion of a satellite excites a time dependent LV force which greatly affects its internal dynamics. Our analysis points out key observational signatures which serve as probes of LV forces. These include modifications to the line of sight velocity dispersion, mass profiles and shapes of satellites. With future data and a more detailed modeling these signatures can be exploited to constrain a new region of the parameter space describing the LV in the dark matter sector.
