We report an implementation of a program for visualizing complex-valued molecular orbitals. The orbital phase information is encoded on each of the vertices of triangle meshes using the standard color wheel. Using this program, we visualized the molecular orbitals for systems with spin-orbit couplings, external magnetic fields, and complex absorbing potentials. Our work has not only created visually attractive pictures, but also clearly demonstrated that the phases of the complex-valued molecular orbitals carry rich chemical and physical information of the system, which has often been unnoticed or overlooked.

In this review we first discuss extension of Bohrs 1913 molecular model and show that it corresponds to the large-D limit of a dimensional scaling (D-scaling) analysis, as developed by Herschbach and coworkers. In a separate but synergetic approach to the two-electron problem, we summarize recent advances in constructing analytical models for describing the two-electron bond. The emphasis here is not maximally attainable numerical accuracy, but beyond textbook accuracy as informed by physical insights. We demonstrate how the interplay of the cusp condition, the asymptotic condition, the electron-correlation, configuration interaction, and the exact one electron two-center orbitals, can produce energy results approaching chemical accuracy. Reviews of more traditional calculational approaches, such as Hartree-Fock, are also given. The inclusion of electron correlation via Hylleraas type functions is well known to be important, but difficult to implement for more than two electrons. The use of the D-scaled Bohr model offers the tantalizing possibility of obtaining electron correlation energy in a non-traditional way.
We investigate the nuclear dynamics near a real-valued conical intersection that is perturbed by a complex-valued spin-orbit coupling. For a model Hamiltonian with two outgoing channels, we find that even a small spin-orbit coupling can dramatically affect the pathway selection on account of Berry force, leading to extremely large spin selectivity (sometime as large as 100%). Thus, this Letter opens the door for organic chemists to start designing spintronic devices that use nuclear motion and conical intersections (combined with standard spin-orbit coupling) in order to achieve spin selection. Vice versa, for physical chemists, this Letter also emphasizes that future semiclassical simulations of intersystem crossing (which have heretofore ignored Berry force) should be corrected to account for the spin polarization that inevitably arises when dynamics pass near conical intersections.
Recently, an approximate theoretical framework was introduced, called local reduced density matrix functional theory (local-RDMFT), where functionals of the one-body reduced density matrix (1-RDM) are minimized under the additional condition that the optimal orbitals satisfy a single electron Schrodinger equation with a local potential. In the present work, we focus on the character of these optimal orbitals. In particular, we compare orbitals obtained by local-RDMFT with those obtained with the full minimization (without the extra condition) by contrasting them against the exact NOs and orbitals from a density functional calculation using the local density approximation (LDA). We find that the orbitals from local-RMDFT are very close to LDA orbitals, contrary to those of the full minimization that resemble the exact NOs. Since local RDMFT preserves the good quality of the description of strong static correlation, this finding opens the way to a mixed density/density matrix scheme, where Kohn-Sham orbitals obtain fractional occupations from a minimization of the occupation numbers using 1-RDM functionals. This will allow for a description of strong correlation at a cost only minimally higher than a density functional calculation.

The new combined formulas have been established for the complex and real rotation-angular functions arising in the evaluation of two-center overlap integrals over arbitrary atomic orbitals in molecular coordinate system. These formulas can be useful in the study of different quantum mechanical problems in both the theory and practice of calculations dealing with atoms, molecules, nuclei and solids when the integer and noninteger n complex and real atomic orbitals basis sets are emploed. This work presented the development of our previous paper (I.I. Guseinov, Phys. Rev. A, 32 (1985) 1864).
Risk diversification is one of the dominant concerns for portfolio managers. Various portfolio constructions have been proposed to minimize the risk of the portfolio under some constrains including expected returns. We propose a portfolio constructio n method that incorporates the complex valued principal component analysis into the risk diversification portfolio construction. The proposed method is verified to outperform the conventional risk parity and risk diversification portfolio constructions.
