Parameters of recent neural networks require a huge amount of memory. These parameters are used by neural networks to perform machine learning tasks when processing inputs. To speed up inference, we develop Partition Pruning, an innovative scheme to reduce the parameters used while taking into consideration parallelization. We evaluated the performance and energy consumption of parallel inference of partitioned models, which showed a 7.72x speed up of performance and a 2.73x reduction in the energy used for computing pruned layers of TinyVGG16 in comparison to running the unpruned model on a single accelerator. In addition, our method showed a limited reduction some numbers in accuracy while partitioning fully connected layers.

Channel pruning is a promising technique to compress the parameters of deep convolutional neural networks(DCNN) and to speed up the inference. This paper aims to address the long-standing inefficiency of channel pruning. Most channel pruning methods recover the prediction accuracy by re-training the pruned model from the remaining parameters or random initialization. This re-training process is heavily dependent on the sufficiency of computational resources, training data, and human interference(tuning the training strategy). In this paper, a highly efficient pruning method is proposed to significantly reduce the cost of pruning DCNN. The main contributions of our method include: 1) pruning compensation, a fast and data-efficient substitute of re-training to minimize the post-pruning reconstruction loss of features, 2) compensation-aware pruning(CaP), a novel pruning algorithm to remove redundant or less-weighted channels by minimizing the loss of information, and 3) binary structural search with step constraint to minimize human interference. On benchmarks including CIFAR-10/100 and ImageNet, our method shows competitive pruning performance among the state-of-the-art retraining-based pruning methods and, more importantly, reduces the processing time by 95% and data usage by 90%.

The performance of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) keeps elevating in recent years with increasing network depth and width. To enable DNNs on edge devices like mobile phones, researchers proposed several network compression methods including pruning, qua ntization and factorization. Among the factorization-based approaches, low-rank approximation has been widely adopted because of its solid theoretical rationale and efficient implementations. Several previous works attempted to directly approximate a pre-trained model by low-rank decomposition; however, small approximation errors in parameters can ripple a large prediction loss. As a result, performance usually drops significantly and a sophisticated fine-tuning is required to recover accuracy. We argue that it is not optimal to separate low-rank approximation from training. Unlike previous works, this paper integrates low rank approximation and regularization into the training. We propose Trained Rank Pruning (TRP), which iterates low rank approximation and training. TRP maintains the capacity of original network while imposes low-rank constraints during training. A stochastic sub-gradient descent optimized nuclear regularization is utilized to further encourage low rank in TRP. The TRP trained network has low-rank structure in nature, and can be approximated with negligible performance loss, eliminating fine-tuning after low rank approximation. The methods are comprehensively evaluated on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet, outperforming previous compression methods using low rank approximation. To accelerate DNNs inference, low-rank approximation has been widely adopted because of its solid theoretical rationale and efficient implementations. Several previous works attempted to directly approximate a pre-trained model by low-rank decomposit ion; however, small approximation errors in parameters can ripple over a large prediction loss. Apparently, it is not optimal to separate low-rank approximation from training. Unlike previous works, this paper integrates low rank approximation and regularization into the training process. We propose Trained Rank Pruning (TRP), which alternates between low rank approximation and training. TRP maintains the capacity of the original network while imposing low-rank constraints during training. A nuclear regularization optimized by stochastic sub-gradient descent is utilized to further promote low rank in TRP. Networks trained with TRP has a low-rank structure in nature, and is approximated with negligible performance loss, thus eliminating fine-tuning after low rank approximation. The proposed method is comprehensively evaluated on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet, outperforming previous compression counterparts using low rank approximation. In this paper, we introduce a new channel pruning method to accelerate very deep convolutional neural networks.Given a trained CNN model, we propose an iterative two-step algorithm to effectively prune each layer, by a LASSO regression based channel selection and least square reconstruction. We further generalize this algorithm to multi-layer and multi-branch cases. Our method reduces the accumulated error and enhance the compatibility with various architectures. Our pruned VGG-16 achieves the state-of-the-art results by 5x speed-up along with only 0.3% increase of error. More importantly, our method is able to accelerate modern networks like ResNet, Xception and suffers only 1.4%, 1.0% accuracy loss under 2x speed-up respectively, which is significant. Code has been made publicly available.

Model compression aims to reduce the redundancy of deep networks to obtain compact models. Recently, channel pruning has become one of the predominant compression methods to deploy deep models on resource-constrained devices. Most channel pruning met hods often use a fixed compression rate for all the layers of the model, which, however, may not be optimal. To address this issue, given a target compression rate for the whole model, one can search for the optimal compression rate for each layer. Nevertheless, these methods perform channel pruning for a specific target compression rate. When we consider multiple compression rates, they have to repeat the channel pruning process multiple times, which is very inefficient yet unnecessary. To address this issue, we propose a Conditional Automated Channel Pruning(CACP) method to obtain the compressed models with different compression rates through single channel pruning process. To this end, we develop a conditional model that takes an arbitrary compression rate as input and outputs the corresponding compressed model. In the experiments, the resultant models with different compression rates consistently outperform the models compressed by existing methods with a channel pruning process for each target compression rate.
