We propose a new experimental method to probe the photon parton distribution function inside the proton (photon PDF) at LHC energies. The method is based on the measurement of dilepton production from the $gamma prightarrowell^+ell^-+X$ reaction in proton--lead collisions. These experimental conditions guarantee a clean environment, both in terms of reconstruction of the final state and in terms of possible background. We firstly calculate the cross sections for this process with collinear photon PDFs, where we identify optimal choice of the scale, in analogy to deep inelastic scattering kinematics. We then perform calculations including the transverse-momentum dependence of the probed photon. Finally we estimate rates of the process for the existing LHC data samples.

In this paper we perform a systematic study of the exclusive dilepton production by $gamma gamma$ interactions in $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC Run 2 energies considering different levels of precision for the treatment of the absorptive corrections an d for the nuclear form factor. The rapidity and invariant mass distributions are estimated taking into account the experimental cutoffs and a comparison with the recent ALICE and ATLAS data for the $e^+ e^-$ and $mu^+ mu^-$ production is presented.
We propose a resolution of the discrepancy between the proton yield predicted by the statistical hadronization approach and data on hadron production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at the LHC. Applying the S-matrix formulation of statistica l mechanics to include pion-nucleon interactions, we reexamine their contribution to the proton yield, taking resonance widths and the presence of nonresonant correlations into account. The effect of multi-pion-nucleon interactions is estimated using lattice QCD results on the baryon-charge susceptibility. We show that a consistent implementation of these features in the statistical hadronization model, leads to a reduction of the predicted proton yield, which then quantitatively matches data of the ALICE collaboration for Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC.
In this paper we investigate the $eta_c$ production by photon - photon and photon - hadron interactions in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC energies. The inclusive and diffractive contributions for the $eta_c$ photoproduction are estimated using t he nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) formalism. We estimate the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions for the $eta_c$ photoproduction in hadronic collisions at the LHC and present our estimate for the total cross sections at the Run 2 energies. A comparison with the predictions for the exclusive $eta_c$ photoproduction, which is a direct probe of the Odderon, also is presented.

Effects of strong longitudinal colour electric fields (SCF), shadowing, and quenching on the open prompt charm mesons (D$^0$, D$^+$, D$^{*+}$, D${_s}{^+}$) production in central Pb + Pb collisions at $sqrt{s_{rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV are investigated with in the framework of the {small HIJING/B=B v2.0} model. We compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{rm PbPb}^{rm D}$, and show that the above nuclear effects constitute important dynamical mechanisms in the description of experimental data. The strength of colour fields (as characterized by the string tension $kappa$), partonic energy loss and jet quenching process lead to a suppression factor consistent with recent published data. Predictions for future beauty mesons measurements have been included. Ratios of strange to non-strange prompt charm mesons in central Pb + Pb and minimum bias (MB) $ p + p$ collisions at 2.76 TeV are also discussed. Minimum bias $p + p$ collisions which constitute theoretical baseline in our calculations are studied at the centre of mass energies $sqrt{s}$ = 2.76 TeV and 7 TeV.
We compute the leading order (LO) $qgto q gamma$ and next-to-leading order (NLO) $ggto q{bar q} gamma$ contributions to inclusive photon production in proton-proton (p+p) collisions at the LHC. These channels provide the dominant contribution at LO a nd NLO for photon transverse momenta $k_{gammaperp}$ corresponding to momentum fractions of $xleq 0.01$ in the colliding protons. Our computations, performed in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory (CGC EFT), show that the NLO contribution dominates at small-$x$ because it is sensitive to $k_perp$-dependent unintegrated gluon distributions in both of the protons. We predict a maximal $10%$ modification of the cross section at low $k_{gammaperp}$ as a direct consequence of the violation of $k_perp$-factorization. The coherence effects responsible for this modification are enhanced in nuclei and can be identified from inclusive photon measurements in proton-nucleus collisions. We provide numerical results for the isolated inclusive photon cross section for $k_{gammaperp}leq 20$ GeV in p+p collisions that can be tested in the future at the LHC.
