Space-time wave packets are diffraction-free, dispersion-free pulsed beams whose propagation-invariance stems from correlations introduced into their spatio-temporal spectrum. We demonstrate here experimentally and computationally that space-time light sheets exhibit self-healing properties upon traversing obstacles in the form of opaque obstructions. The unscattered fraction of the wave packet retains the spatio-temporal correlations and thus propagation-invariance is maintained. The scattered component does not satisfy the requisite correlation and thus undergoes diffractive spreading. These results indicate the robustness of ST wave packets and their potential utility for deep illumination and imaging in scattering media such as biological tissues.

Since the first experimental observation of optical Airy beams, various applications ranging from particle and cell micromanipulation to laser micromachining have exploited their non-diffracting and accelerating properties. The later discovery that A iry beams can self-heal after being blocked by an obstacle further proved their robustness to propagate under scattering and disordered environment. Here, we report the generation of Airy beams on an integrated silicon photonic chip and demonstrate that the on-chip 1D Airy beams preserve the same properties as the 2D beams. The 1D meta-optics used to create the Airy beam has the size of only 3 by 16 microns, at least three orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional optic. The on-chip self-healing beams demonstrated here could potentially enable diffraction-free light routing for on-chip optical networks and high-precision micromanipulation of bio-molecules on an integrated photonic chip.
We introduce the concept of self-healing in the field of complex networks. Obvious applications range from infrastructural to technological networks. By exploiting the presence of redundant links in recovering the connectivity of the system, we intro duce self-healing capabilities through the application of distributed communication protocols granting the smartness of the system. We analyze the interplay between redundancies and smart reconfiguration protocols in improving the resilience of networked infrastructures to multiple failures; in particular, we measure the fraction of nodes still served for increasing levels of network damages. We study the effects of different connectivity patterns (planar square-grids, small-world, scale-free networks) on the healing performances. The study of small-world topologies shows us that the introduction of some long-range connections in the planar grids greatly enhances the resilience to multiple failures giving results comparable to the most resilient (but less realistic) scale-free structures.
Spectral dispersion of ultrashort pulses allows simultaneous focusing of light in both space and time creating so-called spatio-temporal foci. Such space-time coupling may be combined with existing holographic techniques to give a further dimension o f control when generating focal light fields. It is shown that a phase-only hologram placed in the pupil plane of an objective and illuminated by a spatially chirped ultrashort pulse can be used to generate three dimensional arrays of spatio-temporally focused spots. Exploiting the pulse front tilt generated at focus when applying simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF), it is possible to overlap neighbouring foci in time to create a smooth intensity distribution. The resulting light field displays a high level of axial confinement, with experimental demonstrations given through two-photon microscopy and non-linear laser fabrication of glass.
Existing compact routing schemes, e.g., Thorup and Zwick [SPAA 2001] and Chechik [PODC 2013], often have no means to tolerate failures, once the system has been setup and started. This paper presents, to our knowledge, the first self-healing compact routing scheme. Besides, our schemes are developed for low memory nodes, i.e., nodes need only $O(log^2 n)$ memory, and are thus, compact schemes. We introduce two algorithms of independent interest: The first is CompactFT, a novel compact version (using only $O(log n)$ local memory) of the self-healing algorithm Forgiving Tree of Hayes et al. [PODC 2008]. The second algorithm (CompactFTZ) combines CompactFT with Thorup-Zwicks tree-based compact routing scheme [SPAA 2001] to produce a fully compact self-healing routing scheme. In the self-healing model, the adversary deletes nodes one at a time with the affected nodes self-healing locally by adding few edges. CompactFT recovers from each attack in only $O(1)$ time and $Delta$ messages, with only +3 degree increase and $O(log Delta)$ graph diameter increase, over any sequence of deletions ($Delta$ is the initial maximum degree). Additionally, CompactFTZ guarantees delivery of a packet sent from sender s as long as the receiver t has not been deleted, with only an additional $O(y log Delta)$ latency, where $y$ is the number of nodes that have been deleted on the path between $s$ and $t$. If $t$ has been deleted, $s$ gets informed and the packet removed from the network.

The Self-Healing Umbrella Sampling (SHUS) algorithm is an adaptive biasing algorithm which has been proposed to efficiently sample a multimodal probability measure. We show that this method can be seen as a variant of the well-known Wang-Landau algor ithm. Adapting results on the convergence of the Wang-Landau algorithm, we prove the convergence of the SHUS algorithm. We also compare the two methods in terms of efficiency. We finally propose a modification of the SHUS algorithm in order to increase its efficiency, and exhibit some similarities of SHUS with the well-tempered metadynamics method.
