We study theoretically the spectral and transport properties of a superconducting wire with a magnetic defect. We start by modelling the system as a one dimensional magnetic Josephson junction and derive the equation determining the full subgap spectrum in terms of the normal-state transfer matrix for arbitrary length and exchange field of the magnetic region. We demonstrate that the quantum phase transition predicted for a short-range magnetic impurity, and associated with a change of the total spin of the system, also occurs in junctions of finite length. Specifically, we find that the total spin changes discontinuously by integer jumps when bounds states cross the Fermi level. The spin can be calculated by using a generalization of Friedel sum rule for the superconducting state, which we also derive. With these tools, we analyze the subgap spectrum of a junction with the length of the magnetic region smaller than the superconducting coherence length and demonstrate how phase transitions also manifest as change of the sign of the supercurrent.

We study fermion-parity-changing quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in platform Josephson junctions. These QPTs, associated with zero-energy bound states, are rather widely observed experimentally. They emerge from numerical calculations frequently wit hout detailed microscopic insight. Importantly, they may incorrectly lend support to claims for the observations of Majorana zero modes. In this paper we present a fully consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a multi-component Josephson junction. This provides insights into the origin of the QPTs. It also makes it possible to assess the standard self energy approximations which are widely used to understand proximity coupling in topological systems. The junctions we consider are complex and chosen to mirror experiments. Our full proximity calculations associate the mechanism behind the QPT as deriving from a spatially extended, proximity-induced magnetic defect. This defect arises because of the insulating region which effects a local reorganization of the bulk magnetization in the proximitized superconductor. Our results suggest more generally that QPTs in Josephson junctions generally do not require the existence of spin-orbit coupling and should not be confused with, nor are they indicators of, Majorana physics.

We study Majorana zero energy modes (MZEM) that occur in a s-wave superconducting surface, at the ends of a ferromagnetic (FM) chain of adatoms, in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) considering both non self-consistent and self-cons istent superconducting order. We find that in the self-consistent solution the average superconducting gap function over the adatom sites has a discontinuous drop with increasing exchange interaction at the same critical value where the topological phase transition occurs. We also study the MZEM for both treatments of superconducting order and find that the decay length is a linear function of the exchange coupling strength, chemical potential and superconducting order. For wider FM chains the MZEM occur at smaller exchange couplings and the slope of the decay length as a function of exchange coupling grows with chain width. Thus we suggest experimental detection of different delocalization of MZEM in chains of varying widths. We discuss similarities and differences between the MZEM for the two treatments of the superconducting order.
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We formulate a quantitative model describing the oscillations of critical current as a function of thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and use this model to fit recent experimental data. We also calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in this type of junctions and compare DOS oscillations with those of the critical current.

We solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation (GLE) for the mesoscopic superconducting thin film of the square shape in the magnetic field for the wide range of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $0.05<kappa_{eff}<infty $. We found that the phase with the antivor tex exists in the broad range of parameters. When the coherence length decreases the topological phase transition to the phase with the same total vorticity and a reduced symmetry takes place. The giant vortex with the vorticity $m=3$ is found to be unstable for any field, $xi /a$ and $kappa_{eff}ge 0.1$. Reduction of $ kappa _{eff}$ does not make the phase with antivortex more stable contrary to the case of the cylindric sample of the type I superconductor.

Coupling of Josephson-phase and spin-waves is theoretically studied in a superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (S/FI/S) junction. Electromagnetic (EM) field inside the junction and the Josephson current coupled with spin-waves in FI a re calculated by combining Maxwell and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. In the S/FI/S junction, it is found that the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic shows two resonant peaks. Voltages at the resonant peaks are obtained as a function of the normal modes of EM field, which indicates a composite excitation of the EM field and spin-waves in the S/FI/S junction. We also examine another type of junction, in which a nonmagnetic insulator (I) is located at one of interfaces between S and FI. In such a S/I/FI/S junction, three resonant peaks appear in the I-V curve, since the Josephson-phase couples to the EM field in the I layer.
