We convert the information-rich measurements of parallel and phased-array MRI into noisier data that a corresponding single-coil scanner could have taken. Specifically, we replace the responses from multiple receivers with a linear combination that emulates the response from only a single, aggregate receiver, replete with the low signal-to-noise ratio and phase problems of any single one of the original receivers (combining several receivers is necessary, however, since the original receivers usually have limited spatial sensitivity). This enables experimentation in the simpler context of a single-coil scanner prior to development of algorithms for the full complexity of multiple receiver coils.

Purpose: Spatio-temporal encoding (SPEN) experiments can deliver single-scan MR images without folding complications and with robustness to chemical shift and susceptibility artifacts. It is here shown that further resolution improvements can arise b y relying on multiple receivers, to interpolate the sampled data along the low-bandwidth dimension. The ensuing multiple-sensor interpolation is akin to recently introduced SPEN interleaving procedures, albeit without requiring multiple shots. Methods: By casting SPENs spatial rasterization in k-space, it becomes evident that local k-data interpolations enabled by multiple receivers are akin to real-space interleaving of SPEN images. The practical implementation of such resolution-enhancing procedure becomes similar to those normally used in SMASH or SENSE, yet relaxing these methods fold-over constraints. Results: Experiments validating the theoretical expectations were carried out on phantoms and human volunteers on a 3T scanner. The experiments showed the expected resolution enhancement, at no cost in the sequences complexity. With the addition of multibanding and stimulated echo procedures, 48-slices full-brain coverage could be recorded free from distortions at sub-mm resolution, in 3 sec. Conclusion: Super-resolved SPEN with SENSE (SUSPENSE) achieves the goals of multi-shot SPEN interleaving within one single scan, delivering single-shot sub-mm in-plane resolutions in scanners equipped with suitable multiple sensors.
We propose a novel deep neural network architecture by mapping the robust proximal gradient scheme for fast image reconstruction in parallel MRI (pMRI) with regularization function trained from data. The proposed network learns to adaptively combine the multi-coil images from incomplete pMRI data into a single image with homogeneous contrast, which is then passed to a nonlinear encoder to efficiently extract sparse features of the image. Unlike most of existing deep image reconstruction networks, our network does not require knowledge of sensitivity maps, which can be difficult to estimate accurately, and have been a major bottleneck of image reconstruction in real-world pMRI applications. The experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method on a variety of pMRI imaging data sets.
Deep learning has achieved good success in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction, in which convolutional neural networks (CNNs) learn a mapping from the undersampled k-space to the fully sampled images. Although these deep learning methods can improve the reconstruction quality compared with iterative methods without requiring complex parameter selection or lengthy reconstruction time, the following issues still need to be addressed: 1) all these methods are based on big data and require a large amount of fully sampled MRI data, which is always difficult to obtain for cardiac MRI; 2) the effect of coil correlation on reconstruction in deep learning methods for dynamic MR imaging has never been studied. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised deep learning method for multi-coil cine MRI via a time-interleaved sampling strategy. Specifically, a time-interleaved acquisition scheme is utilized to build a set of fully encoded reference data by directly merging the k-space data of adjacent time frames. Then these fully encoded data can be used to train a parallel network for reconstructing images of each coil separately. Finally, the images from each coil are combined via a CNN to implicitly explore the correlations between coils. The comparisons with classic k-t FOCUSS, k-t SLR, L+S and KLR methods on in vivo datasets show that our method can achieve improved reconstruction results in an extremely short amount of time.
Although deep learning (DL) has received much attention in accelerated MRI, recent studies suggest small perturbations may lead to instabilities in DL-based reconstructions, leading to concern for their clinical application. However, these works focu s on single-coil acquisitions, which is not practical. We investigate instabilities caused by small adversarial attacks for multi-coil acquisitions. Our results suggest that, parallel imaging and multi-coil CS exhibit considerable instabilities against small adversarial perturbations.
Improving speed and image quality of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) via novel reconstruction approaches remains one of the highest impact applications for deep learning in medical imaging. The fastMRI dataset, unique in that it contains large volum es of raw MRI data, has enabled significant advances in accelerating MRI using deep learning-based reconstruction methods. While the impact of the fastMRI dataset on the field of medical imaging is unquestioned, the dataset currently lacks clinical expert pathology annotations, critical to addressing clinically relevant reconstruction frameworks and exploring important questions regarding rendering of specific pathology using such novel approaches. This work introduces fastMRI+, which consists of 16154 subspecialist expert bounding box annotations and 13 study-level labels for 22 different pathology categories on the fastMRI knee dataset, and 7570 subspecialist expert bounding box annotations and 643 study-level labels for 30 different pathology categories for the fastMRI brain dataset. The fastMRI+ dataset is open access and aims to support further research and advancement of medical imaging in MRI reconstruction and beyond.
