I present here an experimental system for identifying and annotating metaphor in corpora. It is designed to plug in to Metacorps, an experimental web app for annotating metaphor. As Metacorps users annotate metaphors, the system will use user annotations as training data. When the system is confident, it will suggest an identification and an annotation. Once approved by the user, this becomes more training data. This naturally allows for transfer learning, where the system can, with some known degree of reliability, classify one class of metaphor after only being trained on another class of metaphor. For example, in our metaphorical violence project, metaphors may be classified by the network they were observed on, the grammatical subject or object of the violence metaphor, or the violent word used (hit, attack, beat, etc.).

Water saturation is an important property in reservoir engineering domain. Thus, satisfactory classification of water saturation from seismic attributes is beneficial for reservoir characterization. However, diverse and non-linear nature of subsurfac e attributes makes the classification task difficult. In this context, this paper proposes a generalized Support Vector Data Description (SVDD) based novel classification framework to classify water saturation into two classes (Class high and Class low) from three seismic attributes seismic impedance, amplitude envelop, and seismic sweetness. G-metric means and program execution time are used to quantify the performance of the proposed framework along with established supervised classifiers. The documented results imply that the proposed framework is superior to existing classifiers. The present study is envisioned to contribute in further reservoir modeling.

Feature extraction is an important process of machine learning and deep learning, as the process make algorithms function more efficiently, and also accurate. In natural language processing used in deception detection such as fake news detection, sev eral ways of feature extraction in statistical aspect had been introduced (e.g. N-gram). In this research, it will be shown that by using deep learning algorithms and alphabet frequencies of the original text of a news without any information about the sequence of the alphabet can actually be used to classify fake news and trustworthy ones in high accuracy (85%). As this pre-processing method makes the data notably compact but also include the feature that is needed for the classifier, it seems that alphabet frequencies contains some useful features for understanding complex context or meaning of the original text.

Framing has significant but subtle effects on public opinion and policy. We propose an NLP framework to measure entity-centric frames. We use it to understand media coverage on police violence in the United States in a new Police Violence Frames Corp us of 82k news articles spanning 7k police killings. Our work uncovers more than a dozen framing devices and reveals significant differences in the way liberal and conservative news sources frame both the issue of police violence and the entities involved. Conservative sources emphasize when the victim is armed or attacking an officer and are more likely to mention the victims criminal record. Liberal sources focus more on the underlying systemic injustice, highlighting the victims race and that they were unarmed. We discover temporary spikes in these injustice frames near high-profile shooting events, and finally, we show protest volume correlates with and precedes media framing decisions.
Semi-supervised learning algorithms typically construct a weighted graph of data points to represent a manifold. However, an explicit graph representation is problematic for neural networks operating in the online setting. Here, we propose a feed-for ward neural network capable of semi-supervised learning on manifolds without using an explicit graph representation. Our algorithm uses channels that represent localities on the manifold such that correlations between channels represent manifold structure. The proposed neural network has two layers. The first layer learns to build a representation of low-dimensional manifolds in the input data as proposed recently in [8]. The second learns to classify data using both occasional supervision and similarity of the manifold representation of the data. The channel carrying label information for the second layer is assumed to be silent most of the time. Learning in both layers is Hebbian, making our network design biologically plausible. We experimentally demonstrate the effect of semi-supervised learning on non-trivial manifolds.
Framing a news article means to portray the reported event from a specific perspective, e.g., from an economic or a health perspective. Reframing means to change this perspective. Depending on the audience or the submessage, reframing can become nece ssary to achieve the desired effect on the readers. Reframing is related to adapting style and sentiment, which can be tackled with neural text generation techniques. However, it is more challenging since changing a frame requires rewriting entire sentences rather than single phrases. In this paper, we study how to computationally reframe sentences in news articles while maintaining their coherence to the context. We treat reframing as a sentence-level fill-in-the-blank task for which we train neural models on an existing media frame corpus. To guide the training, we propose three strategies: framed-language pretraining, named-entity preservation, and adversarial learning. We evaluate respective models automatically and manually for topic consistency, coherence, and successful reframing. Our results indicate that generating properly-framed text works well but with tradeoffs.
