Phonon modes in crystals can have angular momenta in general. It nevertheless cancels in equilibrium when the time-reversal symmetry is preserved. In this paper we show that when a temperature gradient is applied and heat current flows in the crystal, the phonon distribution becomes off-equilibrium, and a finite angular momentum is generated by the heat current. This mechanism is analogous to the Edelstein effect in electronic systems. This effect requires crystals with sufficiently low crystallographic symmetries, such as polar or chiral crystal structures. Because of the positive charges of the nuclei, this phonon angular momentum induces magnetization. In addition, when the crystal can freely rotate, this generated phonon angular momentum is converted to a rigidbody rotation of the crystal, due to the conservation of the total angular momentum. Furthermore, in metallic crystals, the phonon angular momentum will be partially converted into spin angular momentum of electrons.

We set up a general microscopic theory for the transfer of energy, momentum, and angular momentum mediated by photons among arbitrary objects in vacuum together with the environment at infinity. Using the nonequilibrium Greens function for the electr omagnetic field and the self energies (polarizability) representing the properties of materials, we derive Meir-Wingreen type formulas for the energy emitted, force, and torque experienced by the objects in a unified formalism. The theory is applied to transport problems of graphene edges under nonequilibrium conditions. We find that the energy radiation of graphene obeys the $T^4$ law with an emissivity of 2.058$%$ that is consistent with both theoretical and experimental work. To generate momentum and angular momentum radiation, potential bias is needed. The observed effects go beyond the predictions of fluctuational electrodynamics.

In condensed matter systems it is necessary to distinguish between the momentum of the constituents of the system and the pseudomomentum of quasiparticles. The same distinction is also valid for angular momentum and pseudoangular momentum. Based on N oethers theorem, we demonstrate that the recently discussed orbital angular momenta of phonons and magnons are pseudoangular momenta. This conceptual difference is important for a proper understanding of the transfer of angular momentum in condensed matter systems, especially in spintronics applications.

We group materials into five symmetry classes and determine in which of these classes phonons carry angular momentum in the Brillouin zone, away from a high-symmetry point, line, or plane. In some materials phonons acquire angular momentum via the fo rces induced by relative displacements of atoms out of their equilibrium positions. However, for other materials, such as ferromagnetic iron, phonon angular momentum arises from the forces induced by relative velocities of atoms. These effects are driven by the spin-orbit interaction.
We propose a new mechanism for the thermal Hall effect in exchange spin-wave systems, which is induced by the magnon-phonon interaction. Using symmetry arguments, we first show that this effect is quite general, and exists whenever the mirror symmetr y in the direction of the magnetization is broken. We then demonstrate our result in a collinear ferromagnet on a square lattice, with perpendicular easy-axis anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction from mirror symmetry breaking. We show that the thermal Hall conductivity is controlled by the resonant contribution from the anti-crossing points between the magnon and phonon branches, and estimate its size to be comparable to that of the magnon mediated thermal Hall effect.
We demonstrate a spin to charge current conversion via magnon-phonon coupling and inverse Edelstein effect on the hybrid device Ni/Cu(Ag)/Bi$_{2}$O$_{3}$. The generation of spin current ($J_{s}approx 10^{8}A/m^{2}$) due to magnon - phonon coupling re veals the viability of acoustic spin pumping as mechanism for the development of spintronic devices. A full in-plane magnetic field angle dependence of the power absorption and a combination of longitudinal and transverse voltage detection reveals the symmetric and asymmetric components of the inverse Edelstein effect voltage induced by Rayleigh type surface acoustic waves. While the symmetric components are well studied, asymmetric components are widely unexplored. We assign the asymmetric contributions to the interference between longitudinal and shear waves and an anisotropic charge distribution in our hybrid device.
