Water exchange reactions around ionic solutes are ubiquitous in aqueous solution-phase chemistry. However, the extreme sensitivity of exchange rates to perturbations in the chemistry of an ionic solute is not well understood. We examine water exchange around model ions within the language of dynamic facilitation theory, typically used to describe glassy and other systems with collective, facilitated dynamics. Through the development of a coarse-grained, kinetically-constrained lattice model of water exchange, we show that the timescale for water exchange scales exponentially with the strength of the solute-solvent interactions.

Among the many existing molecular models of water, the MB-pol many-body potential has emerged as a remarkably accurate model, capable of reproducing thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties across waters solid, liquid, and vapor phases. In t his work, we assessed the performance of MB-pol with respect to an important set of properties related to vapor-liquid coexistence and interfacial behavior. Through direct coexistence classical molecular dynamics simulations at temperatures 400 K < T < 600 K, we calculated properties such as equilibrium coexistence densities, vapor-liquid interfacial tension, vapor pressure, and enthalpy of vaporization, and compared the MB-pol results to experimental data. We also compared rigid vs. fully flexible variants of the MB-pol model and evaluated system size effects for the properties studied. We found that the MB-pol model predictions are in good agreement with experimental data, even for temperatures approaching the vapor-liquid critical point; this agreement was largely insensitive to system size or the rigid vs. flexible treatment of the intramolecular degrees of freedom. These results attest to the chemical accuracy of MB-pol and its high degree of transferability, thus enabling MB-pols application across a large swath of waters phase diagram.
We estimated the residual entropy of ice Ih by the recently developed simulation protocol, namely, the combination of Replica-Exchange Wang-Landau algorithm and Multicanonical Replica-Exchange Method. We employed a model with the nearest neighbor int eractions on the three-dimensional hexagonal lattice, which satisfied the ice rules in the ground state. The results showed that our estimate of the residual entropy is found to be within 0.038 % of series expansion estimate by Nagle and within 0.000077 % of PEPS algorithm by Vanderstraeten. In this article, we not only give our latest estimate of the residual entropy of ice Ih but also discuss the importance of the uniformity of a random number generator in MC simulations.
We consider the first-passage problem for $N$ identical independent particles that are initially released uniformly in a finite domain $Omega$ and then diffuse toward a reactive area $Gamma$, which can be part of the outer boundary of $Omega$ or a re action centre in the interior of $Omega$. For both cases of perfect and partial reactions, we obtain the explicit formulas for the first two moments of the fastest first-passage time (fFPT), i.e., the time when the first out of the $N$ particles reacts with $Gamma$. Moreover, we investigate the full probability density of the fFPT. We discuss a significant role of the initial condition in the scaling of the average fastest first-passage time with the particle number $N$, namely, a much stronger dependence ($1/N$ and $1/N^2$ for partially and perfectly reactive targets, respectively), in contrast to the well known inverse-logarithmic behaviour found when all particles are released from the same fixed point. We combine analytic solutions with scaling arguments and stochastic simulations to rationalise our results, which open new perspectives for studying the relevance of multiple searchers in various situations of molecular reactions, in particular, in living cells.
Activated surface diffusion with interacting adsorbates is analyzed within the Linear Response Theory framework. The so-called interacting single adsorbate model is justified by means of a two-bath model, where one harmonic bath takes into account th e interaction with the surface phonons, while the other one describes the surface coverage, this leading to defining a collisional friction. Here, the corresponding theory is applied to simple systems, such as diffusion on flat surfaces and the frustrated translational motion in a harmonic potential. Classical and quantum closed formulas are obtained. Furthermore, a more realistic problem, such as atomic Na diffusion on the corrugated Cu(001) surface, is presented and discussed within the classical context as well as within the framework of Kramers theory. Quantum corrections to the classical results are also analyzed and discussed.
We develop a novel method of replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD) simulation, mass-scaling REMD (MSREMD) method, which improves trajectory accuracy at high temperatures, and thereby contributes to numerical stability. In addition, the MSREMD me thod can also simplify a replica-exchange routine by eliminating velocity scaling. As a pilot system, a Lennard-Jones fluid is simulated with the new method. The results show that the MSREMD method improves the trajectory accuracy at high temperatures compared with the conventional REMD method. We analytically demonstrate that the MSREMD simulations can reproduce completely the same trajectories of the conventional REMD ones with shorter time steps at high temperatures in case of the Nose-Hoover thermostats. Accordingly, we can easily compare the computational costs of the REMD and MSREMD simulations. We conclude that the MSREMD method decreases the instability and optimizes the computational resources with simpler algorithm under the constant trajectory accuracy at all temperatures.
