Topological metamaterials have robust properties engineered from their macroscopic arrangement, rather than their microscopic constituency. They are promising candidates for creating next-generation technologies due to their protected dissipationless boundary modes. They can be designed by starting from Dirac metamaterials with either symmetry-enforced or accidental degeneracy. The latter case provides greater flexibility in the design of topological switches, waveguides, and cloaking devices, because a large number of tuning parameters can be used to break the degeneracy and induce a topological phase. However, the design of a topological logic element--a switch that can be controlled by the output of a separate switch--remains elusive. Here we numerically demonstrate a topological logic gate for ultrasound by exploiting the large phase space of accidental degeneracies in a honeycomb lattice. We find that a degeneracy can be broken by six physical parameters, and we show how to tune these parameters to create a phononic switch between a topological waveguide and a trivial insulator that can be triggered by ultrasonic heating. Our design scheme is directly applicable to photonic crystals and may guide the design of future electronic topological transistors.

We reveal that phononic thermal transport in graphene is not immune to grain boundaries (GBs) aligned along the direction of the temperature gradient. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations uncover a large reduction in the phononic thermal co nductivity ($kappa_p$) along linear ultra-narrow GBs comprising periodically-repeating pentagon-heptagon dislocations. Greens function calculations and spectral energy density analysis indicate that $kappa_p$ is the complex manifestation of the periodic strain field, which behaves as a reflective diffraction grating with both diffuse and specular phonon reflections, and represents a source of anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. Our findings provide new insights into the integrity of the phononic thermal transport in GB graphene.

Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On th e other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibit topologically-protected boundary states in multiple dimensions. We create the physical realization of the higher-order Weyl semimetal in a chiral phononic crystal with uniaxial screw symmetry. Using near-field spectroscopies, we observe the chiral Fermi arcs on the surfaces and a new type of hinge arc states on the hinge boundaries. These topological boundary arc states link the projections of Weyl points in different dimensions and directions, and hence demonstrate higher-order multidimensional topological physics in Weyl semimetals. Our study establishes the fundamental connection between higher-order topology and Weyl physics in crystalline materials and unveils a new horizon of higher-order topological semimetals where unprecedented materials such as higher-order topological nodal-lines may emerge.

We present a theoretical framework allowing to properly address the nature of surface-like eigenmodes in a hypersonic surface phononic crystal, a composite structure made of periodic metal stripes of nanometer size and periodicity of 1 micron, deposi ted over a semi-infinite silicon substrate. In surface-based phononic crystals there is no distinction between the eigenmodes of the periodically nanostructured overlayer and the surface acoustic modes of the semi-infinite substrate, the solution of the elastic equation being a pseudo-surface acoustic wave partially localized on the nanostructures and radiating energy into the bulk. This problem is particularly severe in the hypersonic frequency range, where semi-infinite substrates surface acoustic modes strongly couple to the periodic overlayer, thus preventing any perturbative approach. We solve the problem introducing a surface-likeness coefficient as a tool allowing to find pseudo-surface acoustic waves and to calculate their line shapes. Having accessed the pseudo-surface modes of the composite structure, the same theoretical frame allows reporting on the gap opening in the now well-defined pseudo-SAW frequency spectrum. We show how the filling fraction, mass loading and geometric factors affect both the frequency gap, and how the mechanical energy is scattered out of the surface waveguiding modes.
Topological phases, including the conventional first-order and higher-order topological insulators and semimetals, have emerged as a thriving topic in the fields of condensed-matter physics and material science. Usually, a topological insulator is ch aracterized by a fixed order topological invariant and exhibits associated bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we realize a new type of topological insulator in a bilayer phononic crystal, which hosts simultaneously the first-order and second-order topologies, referred here as the hybrid-order topological insulator. The one-dimensional gapless helical edge states, and zero-dimensional corner states coexist in the same system. The new hybrid-order topological phase may produce novel applications in topological acoustic devices.
We present a methodology to perform inverse analysis on reconfigurable topological insulators for flexural waves in plate-like structures. First the unit cell topology of a phononic plate is designed, which offers two-fold degeneracy in the band stru cture by topology optimization. In the second step, piezoelectric patches bonded over the substrate plate are connected to an external circuit and used appropriately to break space inversion symmetry. The space inversion symmetry breaking opens a topological band gap by mimicking quantum valley Hall effect. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the topologically protected edge state exhibits wave propagation without backscattering and is immune to disorders. Predominantly, the proposed idea enables real-time reconfigurability of the topological interfaces in waveguide applications.
