We find that the recently developed self consistent and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation, which has been found to provide highly accurate results for many materials, is, however, not able to describe the stability and properties of phases of Fe important for steel. This is due to an overestimated tendency towards magnetism and exaggeration of magnetic energies, which we also find in other transition metals.

The magnetic properties of the intermetallic compound FeAl are investigated using exact exchange density functional theory. This is implemented within a state of the art all-electron full potential method. We find that FeAl is magnetic with a moment of 0.70 $mu_B$, close to the LSDA result of 0.69 $mu_B$. A comparison with the non-magnetic density of states with experimental negative binding energy result shows a much better agreement than any previous calculations. We attribute this to the fine details of the exchange field, in particular its asymmetry, which is captured very well with the orbital dependent exchange potential.
We use dispersion-corrected density-functional theory to determine the relative energies of competing polytypes of bulk layered hexagonal post-transition-metal chalcogenides, to search for the most stable structures of these potentially technological ly important semiconductors. We show that there is some degree of consensus among dispersion-corrected exchange-correlation functionals regarding the energetic orderings of polytypes, but we find that for each material there are multiple stacking orders with relative energies of less than 1 meV per monolayer unit cell, implying that stacking faults are expected to be abundant in all post-transition-metal chalcogenides. By fitting a simple model to all our energy data, we predict that the most stable hexagonal structure has P$6_3$/mmc space group in each case, but that the stacking order differs between GaS, GaSe, GaTe, and InS on the one hand and InSe and InTe on the other. At zero pressure, the relative energies obtained with different functionals disagree by around 1-5 meV per monolayer unit cell, which is not sufficient to identify the most stable structure unambiguously; however, multi-GPa pressures reduce the number of competing phases significantly. At higher pressures, an AB$$-stacked structure of the most stable monolayer polytype is found to be the most stable bulk structure; this structure has not been reported in experiments thus far.

We systematically calculate the structure, formation enthalpy, formation free energy, elastic constants and electronic structure of Ti$_{0.98}$X$_{0.02}$ system by density functional theory (DFT) simulations to explore the effect of transition metal X (X=Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ni, Pd, Rh, Ru, Tc, and Zn) on the stability mechanism of $beta$-titanium. Based on our calculations, the results of formation enthalpy and free energy show that adding trace X is beneficial to the thermodynamic stability of $beta$-titanium. This behavior is well explained by the density of state (DOS). However, the tetragonal shear moduli of Ti$_{0.98}$X$_{0.02}$ systems are negative, indicating that $beta$-titanium doping with a low concentration of X is still elastically unstable at 0 K. Therefore, we theoretically explain that $beta$-titanium doping with trace transition metal X is unstable in the ground state.
We report on our investigation of the crystal structure of arsenic under compression, focusing primarily on the pressure-induced A7 to simple cubic (sc) phase transition. The two-atom rhombohedral unit cell is subjected to pressures ranging from 0 GP a to 200 GPa; for each given pressure, cell lengths and angles, as well as atomic positions, are allowed to vary until the fully relaxed structure is obtained. We find that the nearest and next-nearest neighbor distances give the clearest indication of the occurrence of a structural phase transition. Calculations are performed using the local density approximation (LDA) and the PBE and PW91 generalized gradient approximations (GGA-PBE and GGA-PW91) for the exchange-correlation functional. The A7 to sc transition is found to occur at 21+/-1 GPa in the LDA, at 28+/-1 GPa in the GGA-PBE and at 29+/-1 GPa in the GGA-PW91; no volume discontinuity is observed across the transition in any of the three cases. We use k-point grids as dense as 66X66X66 to enable us to present reliably converged results for the A7 to sc transition of arsenic.
Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal oxide perovskites greatly expand the field of available 2D multifunctional material systems. Here, based on density functional theory calculations, we predicted the presence of ferromagnetism orders accompanying with an insulator-metal phase transition in bilayer $KNbO_{3}$ and $KTaO_{3}$ by applying strain engineering and/or external electric field. Our results will contribute to the applications of few-layer transition metal oxide perovskites in the emerging spintronics and straintronics.
