Roa et al. showed that quantum state discrimination between two nonorthogonal quantum states does not require quantum entanglement but quantum dissonance only. We find that quantum coherence can also be utilized for unambiguous quantum state discrimination. We present a protocol and quantify the required coherence for this task. We discuss the optimal unambiguous quantum state discrimination strategy in some cases. In particular, our work illustrates an avenue to find the optimal strategy for discriminating two nonorthogonal quantum states by measuring quantum coherence.

We propose an oversimplified scheme to unambiguously discriminate nonorthogonal quantum field states inside high-Q cavities. Our scheme, which is based on positive operator-valued mea- sures (POVM) technique, uses a single three-level atom interactin g resonantly with a single mode of a cavity-field and selective atomic state detectors. While the single three-level atom takes the role of the ancilla, the single cavity mode field represents the system we want to obtain information. The efficiency of our proposal is analyzed considering the nowadays achievements in the context of cavity QED.

Optimization of the mean efficiency for unambiguous (or error free)discrimination among $N$ given linearly independent nonorthogonal states should be realized in a way to keep the probabilistic quantum mechanical interpretation. This imposes a condit ion on a certain matrix to be positive semidefinite. We reformulated this condition in such a way that the conditioned optimization problem for the mean efficiency was reduced to finding an unconditioned maximum of a function defined on a unit $N$-sphere for equiprobable states and on an $N$-ellipsoid if the states are given with different probabilities. We established that for equiprobable states a point on the sphere with equal values of Cartesian coordinates, which we call symmetric point, plays a special role. Sufficient conditions for a vector set are formulated for which the mean efficiency for equiprobable states takes its maximal value at the symmetric point. This set, in particular, includes previously studied symmetric states. A subset of symmetric states, for which the optimal measurement corresponds to a POVM requiring a one-dimensional ancilla space is constructed. We presented our constructions of a POVM suitable for the ancilla space dimension varying from 1 till $N$ and the Neumarks extension differing from the existing schemes by the property that it is straightforwardly applicable to the case when it is desirable to present the whole space system + ancilla as the tensor product of a two-dimensional ancilla space and the $N$-dimensional system space.
Quantum Stochastic Walks (QSW) allow for a generalization of both quantum and classical random walks by describing the dynamic evolution of an open quantum system on a network, with nodes corresponding to quantum states of a fixed basis. We consider the problem of quantum state discrimination on such a system, and we solve it by optimizing the network topology weights. Finally, we test it on different quantum network topologies and compare it with optimal theoretical bounds.
In this paper we investigate the connection between quantum information theory and machine learning. In particular, we show how quantum state discrimination can represent a useful tool to address the standard classification problem in machine learnin g. Previous studies have shown that the optimal quantum measurement theory developed in the context of quantum information theory and quantum communication can inspire a new binary classification algorithm that can achieve higher inference accuracy for various datasets. Here we propose a model for arbitrary multiclass classification inspired by quantum state discrimination, which is enabled by encoding the data in the space of linear operators on a Hilbert space. While our algorithm is quantum-inspired, it can be implemented on classical hardware, thereby permitting immediate applications.
We develop a practical quantum tomography protocol and implement measurements of pure states of ququarts realized with polarization states of photon pairs (biphotons). The method is based on an optimal choice of the measuring schemes parameters that provides better quality of reconstruction for the fixed set of statistical data. A high accuracy of the state reconstruction (above 0.99) indicates that developed methodology is adequate.
