Aim. The unusual transient ATLAS17aeu was serendipitously detected within the sky localisation of the gravitational wave trigger GW170104. The importance of a possible association with gravitational waves coming from a binary black hole merger led to an extensive follow-up campaign, with the aim of assessing a possible connection with GW170104. Methods. With several telescopes, we carried out both photometric and spectroscopic observations of ATLAS17aeu, for several epochs, between $sim 3$ and $sim 230$ days after the first detection. Results. We studied in detail the temporal and spectroscopic properties of ATLAS17aeu and its host galaxy. We detected spectral features similar to those of a broad lined supernova superposed to an otherwise typical long-GRB afterglow. Based on analysis of the optical light curve, spectrum and host galaxy SED, we conclude that the redshift of the source is probably $z simeq 0.5 pm 0.2$. Conclusions. While the redshift range we have determined is marginally compatible with that of the gravitational wave event, the presence of a supernova component and the consistency of this transient with the E$_{rm p}$-E$_{rm iso}$ correlation support the conclusion that ATLAS17aeu was associated with the long gamma-ray burst GRB170105A. This rules out the association of the GRB170105A/ATLAS17aeu transient with the gravitational wave event GW170104, which was due to a binary black hole merger.

We report the discovery and multi-wavelength data analysis of the peculiar optical transient, ATLAS17aeu. This transient was identified in the skymap of the LIGO gravitational wave event GW170104 by our ATLAS and Pan-STARRS coverage. ATLAS17aeu was d iscovered 23.1hrs after GW170104 and rapidly faded over the next 3 nights, with a spectrum revealing a blue featureless continuum. The transient was also detected as a fading x-ray source by Swift and in the radio at 6 and 15 GHz. A gamma ray burst GRB170105A was detected by 3 satellites 19.04hrs after GW170104 and 4.10hrs before our first optical detection. We analyse the multi-wavelength fluxes in the context of the known GRB population and discuss the observed sky rates of GRBs and their afterglows. We find it statistically likely that ATLAS17aeu is an afterglow associated with GRB170105A, with a chance coincidence ruled out at the 99% confidence or 2.6$sigma$. A long, soft GRB within a redshift range of $1 lesssim z lesssim 2.9$ would be consistent with all the observed multi-wavelength data. The Poisson probability of a chance occurrence of GW170104 and ATLAS17aeu is $p=0.04$. This is the probability of a chance coincidence in 2D sky location and in time. These observations indicate that ATLAS17aeu is plausibly a normal GRB afterglow at significantly higher redshift than the distance constraint for GW170104 and therefore a chance coincidence. However if a redshift of the faint host were to place it within the GW170104 distance range, then physical association with GW170104 should be considered.
We summarize our understanding of millisecond radio bursts from an extragalactic population of sources. FRBs occur at an extraordinary rate, thousands per day over the entire sky with radiation energy densities at the source about ten billion times l arger than those from Galactic pulsars. We survey FRB phenomenology, source models and host galaxies, coherent radiation models, and the role of plasma propagation effects in burst detection. The FRB field is guaranteed to be exciting: new telescopes will expand the sample from the current ~80 unique burst sources (and a few secure localizations and redshifts) to thousands, with burst localizations that enable host-galaxy redshifts emerging directly from interferometric surveys. * FRBs are now established as an extragalactic phenomenon. * Only a few sources are known to repeat. Despite the failure to redetect other FRBs, they are not inconsistent with all being repeaters. * FRB sources may be new, exotic kinds of objects or known types in extreme circumstances. Many inventive models exist, ranging from alien spacecraft to cosmic strings but those concerning compact objects and supermassive black holes have gained the most attention. A rapidly rotating magnetar is a promising explanation for FRB 121102 along with the persistent source associated with it, but alternative source models are not ruled out for it or other FRBs. * FRBs are powerful tracers of circumsource environments, `missing baryons in the IGM, and dark matter. * The relative contributions of host galaxies and the IGM to propagation effects have yet to be disentangled, so dispersion measure distances have large uncertainties.

Observations of millisecond-long radio bursts from beyond the Milky Way have revealed a repeat pattern with a roughly 16-day period -- a finding that adds to the enigma of the origin of these bursts.

Context. One of the most striking discoveries of the INTEGRAL observatory is the existence of a previously unknown population of X-ray sources in the inner arms of the Galaxy. The investigations of the optical/NIR counterparts of some of them have pr ovided evidence that they are highly absorbed high mass X-ray binaries hosting supergiants. Aims. We aim to identify the optical/NIR counterpart of one of the newly discovered INTEGRAL sources, IGR J16283-4838, and determine the nature of this system. Methods. We present optical and NIR observations of the field of IGR J16283-4838, and use the astrometry and photometry of the sources within it to identify its counterpart. We obtain its NIR spectrum, and its optical/NIR spectral energy distribution by means of broadband photometry. We search for the intrinsic polarization of its light, and its short and long-term photometric variability. Results. We demonstrate that this source is a highly absorbed HMXB located beyond the Galactic center, and that it may be surrounded by a variable circumstellar medium.
