Using a real-time path integral approach we develop an algorithm to calculate multi-time correlation functions of open few-level quantum systems that is applicable to highly nonequilibrium dynamics. The calculational scheme fully keeps the non-Markovian memory introduced by the pure-dephasing type coupling to a continuum of oscillators. Furthermore, we discuss how to deal consistently with the simultaneous presence of non-Markovian and Markovian system reservoir interactions. We apply the method to a crucial test case, namely the evaluation of emission spectra of a laser-driven two-level quantum dot coupled to a continuum of longitudinal acoustic phonons, which give rise to non-Markovian dynamics. Here, we also account for the coupling to a photonic environment, which models radiative decay and can be treated as a Markovian bath. The phonon side bands are found on the correct side of the zero phonon line in our calculation, in contrast to known results where the quantum regression theorem is applied naively to non-Markovian dynamics. Combining our algorithm with a recently improved iteration scheme for performing the required sum over paths we demonstrate the numerical feasibility of our approach to systems with more than two levels. Results are shown for the second-order photonic two-time correlation function of a quantum dot-cavity system with seven states on the Jaynes-Cummings ladder taken into account.

Perturbation theory (PT) is a powerful and commonly used tool in the investigation of closed quantum systems. In the context of open quantum systems, PT based on the Markovian quantum master equation is much less developed. The investigation of open systems mostly relies on exact diagonalization of the Liouville superoperator or quantum trajectories. In this approach, the system size is rather limited by current computational capabilities. Analogous to closed-system PT, we develop a PT suitable for open quantum systems. This proposed method is useful in the analytical understanding of open systems as well as in the numerical calculation of system properties, which would otherwise be impractical.
Non-Markovian reduced dynamics of an open system is investigated. In the case the initial state of the reservoir is the vacuum state, an approximation is introduced which makes possible to construct a reduced dynamics which is completely positive.
We extend the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to open quantum systems which exhibit multi-channel coupling to a harmonic oscillator reservoir. Open quantum systems which have multi-channel reservoir coupling are those in which ca nonical transformation of reservoir modes cannot reduce the number of reservoir operators appearing in the interaction Hamiltonian to one. We show that the non-Markovian QSD equation for multi-channel reservoir coupling can, in some cases, lead to an exact master equation which we derive. We then derive the exact master equation for the three-level system in a vee-type configuration which has multi-channel reservoir coupling and give the analytical solution. Finally, we examine the evolution of the three-level vee-type system with generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck reservoir correlations numerically.
The non-Markovian collision integral is obtained on the base of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for Green functions in a form with allowance for small retardation effects. The collisional relaxation times and damping width of the giant isovector dipole r esonances in nuclear matter are calculated. For an infinite Fermi liquid the dependence of the relaxation times on the collective vibration frequency and the temperature corresponds to the Landaus prescription.
The persistence exponent theta for the global order parameter, M(t), of a system quenched from the disordered phase to its critical point describes the probability, p(t) sim t^{-theta}, that M(t) does not change sign in the time interval t following the quench. We calculate theta to O(epsilon^2) for model A of critical dynamics (and to order epsilon for model C) and show that at this order M(t) is a non-Markov process. Consequently, theta is a new exponent. The calculation is performed by expanding around a Markov process, using a simplified version of the perturbation theory recently introduced by Majumdar and Sire [Phys. Rev. Lett. _77_, 1420 (1996); cond-mat/9604151].
