We explore the ground-state properties of the two-band Hubbard model with degenerate electronic bands, parametrized by nearest-neighbor hopping $t$, intra- and inter-orbital on-site Coulomb repulsions $U$ and $U^prime$, and Hund coupling $J$, focusing on the case with $J>0$. Using Jastrow-Slater wave functions, we consider both states with and without magnetic/orbital order. Electron pairing can also be included in the wave function, in order to detect the occurrence of superconductivity for generic electron densities $n$. When no magnetic/orbital order is considered, the Mott transition is continuous for $n=1$ (quarter filling); instead, at $n=2$ (half filling), it is first order for small values of $J/U$, while it turns out to be continuous when the ratio $J/U$ is increased. A significant triplet pairing is present in a broad region around $n=2$. By contrast, singlet superconductivity (with $d$-wave symmetry) is detected only for small values of the Hund coupling and very close to half filling. When including magnetic and orbital order, the Mott insulator acquires antiferromagnetic order for $n=2$; instead, for $n=1$ the insulator has ferromagnetic and antiferro-orbital orders. In the latter case, a metallic phase is present for small values of $U/t$ and the metal-insulator transition becomes first order. In the region with $1<n<2$, we observe that ferromagnetism (with no orbital order) is particularly robust for large values of the Coulomb repulsion and that triplet superconductivity is strongly suppressed by the presence of antiferromagnetism. The case with $J=0$, which has an enlarged SU(4) symmetry due to the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom, is also analyzed.

This article reviews recent results of magnetotransport and magnetization measurements performed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) and single crystalline Kish graphite samples. Both metal-insulator and insulator-metal transitions driven by magnetic field applied perpendicular to the basal planes of graphite were found and discussed in the light of relevant theories. The results provide evidence for the existence of localized superconducting domains in HOPG even at room temperature, as well as an interplay between superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations. We also present experimental evidence for the superconductivity occurrence in graphite-sulfur composites.

We study a two-band Hubbard model using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the exact diagonalization method. At the electron density $n=2$, a transition from a band-insulator to a correlated semimetal occurs when the on-site Coulomb intera ction $U$ is varied for a fixed value of the charge-transfer energy $Delta$. At low temperature, the correlated semimetal shows ferromagnetism or superconductivity. With increasing doping $|n-2|$, the ferromagnetic transition temperature rapidly decreases and finally becomes zero at a critical value of $n$. The second-order phase transition occurs at high temperature, while a phase separation of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states takes place at low temperature. The superconducting transition temperature gradually decreases and finally becomes zero near $n=1$ ($n=3$) where the system is Mott insulator which shows antiferromagnetism at low temperature.

We investigate a two-orbital model for iron-based superconductors to elucidate the effect of interplay between electron correlation and Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling by using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the exact diagonalizat ion method. When the intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb interactions, $U$ and $U$, increase with $U=U$, both the local spin and orbital susceptibilities, $chi_{s}$ and $chi_{o}$, increase with $chi_{s}=chi_{o}$ in the absence of the Hunds rule coupling $J$ and the electron-phonon coupling $g$. In the presence of $J$ and $g$, there are distinct two regimes: for $J stackrel{>}{_sim} 2g^2/omega_0$ with the phonon frequency $omega_0$, $chi_{s}$ is enhanced relative to $chi_{o}$ and shows a divergence at $J=J_c$ above which the system becomes Mott insulator, while for $J stackrel{<}{_sim} 2g^2/omega_0$, $chi_{o}$ is enhanced relative to $chi_{s}$ and shows a divergence at $g=g_c$ above which the system becomes bipolaronic insulator. In the former regime, the superconductivity is mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations enhanced due to Fermi-surface nesting and is found to be largely dependent on carrier doping. On the other hand, in the latter regime, the superconductivity is mediated by ferro-orbital fluctuations and is observed for wide doping region including heavily doped case without the Fermi-surface nesting.
Cooperation and competition between the antiferromagnetic, d-wave superconducting and Mott-insulating states are explored for the two-dimensional Hubbard model including nearest and next-nearest-neighbor hoppings at zero temperature. Using the variat ional cluster approach with clusters of different shapes and sizes up to 10 sites, it is found that the doping-driven transition from a phase with microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity to a purely superconducting phase is discontinuous for strong interaction and accompanied by phase separation. At half-filling the system is in an antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state with vanishing charge compressibility. Upon decreasing the interaction strength U below a certain critical value of roughly U=4 (in units of the nearest-neighbor hopping), however, the filling-dependent magnetic transition changes its character and becomes continuous. Phase separation or, more carefully, the tendency towards the formation of inhomogeneous states disappears. This critical value is in contrast to previous studies, where a much larger value was obtained. Moreover, we find that the system at half-filling undergoes the Mott transition from an insulator to a state with a finite charge compressibility at essentially the same value. The weakly correlated state at half-filling exhibits superconductivity microscopically admixed to the antiferromagnetic order. This scenario suggests a close relation between phase separation and the Mott-insulator physics.
We consider the one-band Hubbard model on the square lattice by using variational and Greens function Monte Carlo methods, where the variational states contain Jastrow and backflow correlations on top of an uncorrelated wave function that includes BC S pairing and magnetic order. At half filling, where the ground state is antiferromagnetically ordered for any value of the on-site interaction $U$, we can identify a hidden critical point $U_{rm Mott}$, above which a finite BCS pairing is stabilized in the wave function. The existence of this point is reminiscent of the Mott transition in the paramagnetic sector and determines a separation between a Slater insulator (at small values of $U$), where magnetism induces a potential energy gain, and a Mott insulator (at large values of $U$), where magnetic correlations drive a kinetic energy gain. Most importantly, the existence of $U_{rm Mott}$ has crucial consequences when doping the system: We observe a tendency to phase separation into a hole-rich and a hole-poor region only when doping the Slater insulator, while the system is uniform by doping the Mott insulator. Superconducting correlations are clearly observed above $U_{rm Mott}$, leading to the characteristic dome structure in doping. Furthermore, we show that the energy gain due to the presence of a finite BCS pairing above $U_{rm Mott}$ shifts from the potential to the kinetic sector by increasing the value of the Coulomb repulsion.
