Solid electrolytes for solid-state Li-ion batteries are stimulating considerable interest for next-generation energy storage applications. The Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ garnet-type solid electrolyte has received appreciable attention as a result of its high ionic conductivity. However, several challenges for the successful application of solid-state devices based on Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ remain, such as dendrite formation and maintaining physical contact at interfaces over many Li intercalation/extraction cycles. Here, we apply first-principles density functional theory to provide insights into the Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ particle morphology under various physical and chemical conditions. Our findings indicate Li segregation at the surfaces, suggesting Li-rich grain boundaries at typical synthesis and sintering conditions. On the basis of our results, we propose practical strategies to curb Li segregation at the Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ interfaces. This approach can be extended to other Li-ion conductors for the design of practical energy storage devices.

Understanding the response of ceramics operating in extreme environments is of interest for a variety of applications. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations have been used to investigate the effect of structure and $B$-site (=Ti, Zr) cation composi tion of lanthanum-based oxides (La$_2$$B_2$O$_7$) on electronic-excitation-induced amorphization. We find that the amorphous transition in monoclinic layered perovskite La$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ occurs for a lower degree of electronic excitation than for cubic pyrochlore La$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. While in each case the formation of O$_2$-like molecules drives the structure to an amorphous state, an analysis of the polyhedral connection network reveals that the rotation of TiO$_6$ octahedra in the monoclinic phase can promote such molecule formation, while such octahedral rotation is not possible in the cubic phase. However, once the symmetry of the cubic structure is broken by substituting Ti for Zr, it becomes less resistant to amorphization. A compound made of 50% Ti and 50% Zr (La$_2$TiZrO$_7$) is found to be more resistant in the monoclinic than in the cubic phase, which may be related to the lower bandgap of the cubic phase. These results illustrate the complex interplay of structure and composition that give rise to the radiation resistance of these important functional materials.

We present thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the quantum spin ice candidate Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The parameterization of the anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian is refined based on high-energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering dat a together with thermodynamic data using linear spin wave theory and numerical linked cluster expansion. Magnetic phase diagrams are calculated using classical Monte Carlo simulations with fields along mbox{[100]}, mbox{[110]} and mbox{[111]} crystallographic directions which agree qualitatively with the experiment. Large hysteresis and irreversibility for mbox{[111]} is reproduced and the microscopic mechanism is revealed by mean field calculations to be the existence of metastable states and domain inversion. Our results shed light on the explanations of the recently observed dynamical kagome ice in Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in mbox{[111]} fields.
The crystal structure of Lanthanum Cerium Oxide (La$_2$Ce$_2$O$_7$) is investigated using textit{ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The relative stability of fluorite- and pyrochlore-like structures is studied through comparison of their formation energies. These formation energies show the pyrochlore structure to be favored over the fluorite structure, apparently contradicting the conclusions based on experimental neutron and X-ray diffraction (XRD). By calculating and comparing XRD spectra for a set of differently ordered and random structures, we show that the pyrochlore structure is consistent with diffraction experiments. For these reasons, we suggest the pyrochlore structure as the ground state crystal structure for La$_2$Ce$_2$O$_7$. %we show that among the structures considered in this work, the pyrochlore geometry is clearly favorable over the disordered fluorite geometry.

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the strongly correlated material La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ are studied by using both the density function theory plus $U$ (DFT+$U$) method and the DFT plus Gutzwiller (DFT+G) variational method. The g round-state magnetic structure of this material obtained with DFT+$U$ is consistent with recent experiments, but its band gap is significantly overestimated by DFT+$U$, even with a small Hubbard $U$ value. In contrast, the DFT+G method yields a band gap of 0.1 - 0.2 eV, in excellent agreement with experiment. Detailed analysis shows that the electronic and magnetic properties of of La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ are strongly affected by charge and spin fluctuations which are missing in the DFT+$U$ method.
The electrical, magnetic, and structural properties of Sr$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_2$O$_7$ (0 $leq x leq$ 0.2) are investigated. The parent compound Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is a paramagnetic metal, critically close to magnetic order. We have found that, with a Ru-site doping by only a few percent of Mn, the ground state is switched from a paramagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator. Optical conductivity measurements show the opening of a gap as large as 0.1 eV, indicating that the metal-to-insulator transition is driven by the electron correlation. The complex low-temperature antiferromagnetic spin arrangement, reminiscent of those observed in some nickelates and manganites, suggests a long range orbital order.
