Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) systems are used to capture images of the human digestive tract for medical applications. The antenna is one of the most important components in a WCE system. In this paper, we provide novel small antenna solutions for a WCE system operating at the 433 MHz ISM band. The in-body capsule transmitter uses an ultrawideband outer-wall conformal loop antenna, whereas the on-body receiver uses a printed monopole antenna with a partial ground plane. A colon-equivalent tissue phantom and CST Gustav voxel human body model were used for the numerical studies of the capsule antenna. The simulation results in the colon-tissue phantom were validated through in-vitro measurements using a liquid phantom. According to the phantom simulations, the capsule antenna has -10 dB impedance matching from 309 to 1104 MHz. The ultrawideband characteristic enables the capsule antenna to tolerate the detuning effects due to electronic modules in the capsule and due to the proximity of various different tissues in gastrointestinal tracts. The on-body antenna was numerically evaluated on the colon-tissue phantom and the CST Gustav voxel human body model, followed by in-vitro and ex-vivo measurements for validation. The on-body antenna exceeds -10 dB impedance matching from 390 MHz to 500 MHz both in simulations and measurements. Finally, this paper reports numerical and experimental studies of the path loss for the radio link between an in-body capsule transmitter and an on-body receiver using our antenna solutions. The path loss both in simulations and measurements is less than 50 dB for any capsule orientation and location.

To improve national security, government agencies have long been committed to enforcing powerful surveillance measures on suspicious individuals or communications. In this paper, we consider a wireless legitimate surveillance system, where a full-dup lex multi-antenna legitimate monitor aims to eavesdrop on a dubious communication link between a suspicious pair via proactive jamming. Assuming that the legitimate monitor can successfully overhear the suspicious information only when its achievable data rate is no smaller than that of the suspicious receiver, the key objective is to maximize the eavesdropping non-outage probability by joint design of the jamming power, receive and transmit beamformers at the legitimate monitor. Depending on the number of receive/transmit antennas implemented, i.e., single-input single-output, single-input multiple-output, multiple-input single-output and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), four different scenarios are investigated. For each scenario, the optimal jamming power is derived in closed-form and efficient algorithms are obtained for the optimal transmit/receive beamforming vectors. Moreover, low-complexity suboptimal beamforming schemes are proposed for the MIMO case. Our analytical findings demonstrate that by exploiting multiple antennas at the legitimate monitor, the eavesdropping non-outage probability can be significantly improved compared to the single antenna case. In addition, the proposed suboptimal transmit zero-forcing scheme yields similar performance as the optimal scheme.
Metasurfaces have drawn significant attentions due to their superior capability in tailoring electromagnetic waves with a wide frequency range, from microwave to visible light. Recently, programmable metasurfaces have demonstrated the ability of mani pulating the amplitude or phase of electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner in real time, which renders them especially appealing in the applications of wireless communications. To practically demonstrate the feasibility of programmable metasurfaces in future communication systems, in this paper, we design and realize a novel metasurface-based wireless communication system. By exploiting the dynamically controllable property of programmable metasurface, we firstly introduce the fundamental principle of the metasurface-based wireless communication system design. We then present the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of the proposed metasurface-based wireless communication system with a prototype, which realizes single carrier quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission over the air. In the developed prototype, the phase of the reflected electromagnetic wave of programmable metasurface is directly manipulated in real time according to the baseband control signal, which achieves 2.048 Mbps data transfer rate with video streaming transmission over the air. Experimental result is provided to compare the performance of the proposed metasurface-based architecture against the conventional one. With the slight increase of the transmit power by 5 dB, the same bit error rate (BER) performance can be achieved as the conventional system in the absence of channel coding. Such a result is encouraging considering that the metasurface-based system has the advantages of low hardware cost and simple structure, thus leading to a promising new architecture for wireless communications.
We experimentally validate a mode-dependent loss (MDL) estimation technique employing acorrection factor to remove the MDL estimation dependence on the SNR when using a minimum meansquare error (MMSE) equalizer. A reduction of the MDL estimation erro r is observed for both transmitter-side and in-span MDL emulation.
One of the key enablers of future wireless communications is constituted by massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which can improve the spectral efficiency by orders of magnitude. However, in existing massive MIMO systems, convention al phased arrays are used for beamforming, which result in excessive power consumption and hardware cost. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been considered as one of the revolutionary technologies to enable energy-efficient and smart wireless communications, which is a two-dimensional structure with a large number of passive elements. In this paper, we propose and develop a new type of high-gain yet low-cost RIS having 256 elements. The proposed RIS combines the functions of phase shift and radiation together on an electromagnetic surface, where positive intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes are used to realize 2-bit phase shifting for beamforming. Based on this radical design, the worlds first wireless communication prototype using RIS having 256 2-bit elements is designed and developed. Specifically, the prototype conceived consists of modular hardware and flexible software, including the hosts for parameter setting and data exchange, the universal software radio peripherals (USRPs) for baseband and radio frequency (RF) signal processing, as well as the RIS for signal transmission and reception. Our performance evaluation confirms the feasibility and efficiency of RISs in future wireless communications. More particularly, it is shown that a 21.7 dBi antenna gain can be obtained by the proposed RIS at 2.3 GHz, while at the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency, i.e., 28.5 GHz, a 19.1 dBi antenna gain can be achieved. Furthermore, the over-the-air (OTA) test results show that the RIS-based wireless communication prototype developed is capable of significantly reducing the power consumption.
In this paper, we consider a three-node cooperative wireless powered communication system consisting of a multi-antenna hybrid access point (H-AP) and a single-antenna relay and a single-antenna user. The energy constrained relay and user first harve st energy in the downlink and then the relay assists the user using the harvested power for information transmission in the uplink. The optimal energy beamforming vector and the time split between harvest and cooperation are investigated. To reduce the computational complexity, suboptimal designs are also studied, where closed-form expressions are derived for the energy beamforming vector and the time split. For comparison purposes, we also present a detailed performance analysis in terms of the achievable outage probability and the average throughput of an intuitive energy beamforming scheme, where the H-AP directs all the energy towards the user. The findings of the paper suggest that implementing multiple antennas at the H-AP can significantly improve the system performance, and the closed-form suboptimal energy beamforming vector and time split yields near optimal performance. Also, for the intuitive beamforming scheme, a diversity order of (N+1)/2 can be achieved, where N is the number of antennas at the H-AP.
