We apply near-threshold laser photodetachment to characterize the rotational quantum level distribution of OH$^-$ ions stored in the cryogenic ion-beam storage ring, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We find that the stored ions relax to a rotational temperature of 13.4$pm$0.2 K with 94.9$pm$0.3 % of the ions in the rotational ground state. This is consistent with the storage ring temperature of 13.5$pm$0.5 K as measured with eight silicon diodes, but in contrast to all earlier studies in cryogenic traps and rings where the rotational temperatures were always much higher than those of the storage devices at their lowest temperatures. Furthermore, we actively modify the rotational distribution through selective photodetachment to produce an OH$^-$ beam where 99.1$pm$0.1 % of approximately one million stored ions are in the $J$=0 rotational ground state.

An electrostatic cryogenic storage ring, CSR, for beams of anions and cations with up to 300 keV kinetic energy per unit charge has been designed, constructed and put into operation. With a circumference of 35 m, the ion-beam vacuum chambers and all beam optics are in a cryostat and cooled by a closed-cycle liquid helium system. At temperatures as low as (5.5 $pm$ 1) K inside the ring, storage time constants of several minutes up to almost an hour were observed for atomic and molecular, anion and cation beams at an energy of 60 keV. The ion-beam intensity, energy-dependent closed-orbit shifts (dispersion) and the focusing properties of the machine were studied by a system of capacitive pickups. The Schottky-noise spectrum of the stored ions revealed a broadening of the momentum distribution on a time scale of 1000 s. Photodetachment of stored anions was used in the beam lifetime measurements. The detachment rate by anion collisions with residual-gas molecules was found to be extremely low. A residual-gas density below 140 cm$^{-3}$ is derived, equivalent to a room-temperature pressure below 10$^{-14}$ mbar. Fast atomic, molecular and cluster ion beams stored for long periods of time in a cryogenic environment will allow experiments on collision- and radiation-induced fragmentation processes of ions in known internal quantum states with merged and crossed photon and particle beams.
Theoretical studies are presented how the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron in H-like ions in electrostatic storage rings can sensitively be determined. With the proposed experiments a new constraint of about $10^{-29}$ e cm for the electr on EDM can be established what is by an order of magnitude more restrictive than the existing bounds. Experiments with H-like ions may provide a possibility to distinguish between the electron EDM effect and the effect of P,T violating interaction between the atomic electron and the nucleus.
We produce cold and dense clouds of atomic ions (Ca$^+$, Dy$^+$) by laser ablation of metal targets and cryogenic buffer gas cooling of the resulting plasma. We measure the temperature and density of the ion clouds using laser absorption spectroscopy . We find that large ion densities can be obtained at temperatures as low as 6 K. Our method opens up new ways to study cold neutral plasmas, and to perform survey spectroscopy of ions that cannot be laser-cooled easily.
We present a method which delivers a continuous, high-density beam of slow and internally cold polar molecules. In our source, warm molecules are first cooled by collisions with a cryogenic helium buffer gas. Cold molecules are then extracted by mean s of an electrostatic quadrupole guide. For ND$_3$ the source produces fluxes up to $(7 pm ^{7}_{4}) times 10^{10}$ molecules/s with peak densities up to $(1.0 pm ^{1.0}_{0.6}) times 10^9$ molecules/cm$^3$. For H$_2$CO the population of rovibrational states is monitored by depletion spectroscopy, resulting in single-state populations up to $(82 pm 10)%$.

Rate coefficients for photorecombination (PR) and cross sections for electron-impact ionization (EII) of Fe$^{14+}$ forming Fe$^{13+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$, respectively, have been measured by employing the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-io n storage ring. Rate coefficients for PR and EII of Fe$^{14+}$ ions in a plasma are derived from the experimental measurements. Simple parametrizations of the experimentally derived plasma rate coefficients are provided for use in the modeling of photoionized and collisionally ionized plasmas. In the temperature ranges where Fe$^{14+}$ is expected to form in such plasmas the latest theoretical rate coefficients of Altun et al. [Astron. Astrophys. 474, 1051 (2007)] for PR and of Dere [Astron. Astrophys. 466, 771 (2007)] for EII agree with the experimental results to within the experimental uncertainties. Common features in the PR and EII resonance structures are identified and discussed.
