We propose a novel approach to the solution of nematic Liquid Crystal models based on the derivation of a system of nonlinear wave equations for order parameters such that the occurrence of uniaxial and biaxial phase transitions can be interpreted as the propagation of a two-dimensional shock wave in the space of thermodynamic parameters. We obtain the exact equations of state for an integrable model of biaxial nematic liquid crystals and show that the classical transition from isotropic to uniaxial phase in absence of external fields is the result of a van der Waals type phase transition, where the jump in the order parameters is a classical shock generated from a gradient catastrophe at a non-zero isotropic field. The study of the equations of state provides the first analytical description of the rich structure of nematics phase diagrams in presence of external fields.

We study a simple model of a nematic liquid crystal made of parallel ellipsoidal particles interacting via a repulsive Gaussian law. After identifying the relevant solid phases of the system through a careful zero-temperature scrutiny of as many as e leven candidate crystal structures, we determine the melting temperature for various pressure values, also with the help of exact free energy calculations. Among the prominent features of this model are pressure-driven reentrant melting and the stabilization of a columnar phase for intermediate temperatures.
A wide class of exact solutions is obtained for the problem of finding the equilibrium configurations of charged jets of a conducting liquid; these configurations correspond to the finite-amplitude azimuthal deformations of the surface of a round jet . A critical value of the linear electric charge density is determined, for which the jet surface becomes self-intersecting, and the jet splits into two. It exceeds the density value required for the excitation of the linear azimuthal instability of the round jet. Hence, there exists a range of linear charge density values, where our solutions may be stable with respect to small azimuthal perturbations.
Motivated by recent experiments on the rod-like virus bacteriophage fd, confined to circular and annular domains, we present a theoretical study of structural transitions in these geometries. Using the continuum theory of nematic liquid crystals, we examine the competition between bulk elasticity and surface anchoring, mediated by the formation of topological defects. We show analytically that bulk defects are unstable with respect to defects sitting at the boundary. Moreover, in case of an annulus, whose topology does not require the presence of topological defects, under weak anchoring conditions we find that nematic textures with boundary defects are stable compared to the defect free configurations. Thus our simple approach, with no fitting parameters, suggests a possible symmetry breaking mechanism responsible for the formation of one-, two- and three-fold textures under annular confinement.
A parametrized double-well potential is proposed to address the issue of the impact of shape deformability of some bistable physical systems, on their quantum dynamics and classical statistical mechanics. The parametrized double-well potential posses ses two fixed degenerate minima and a constant barrier height, but a tunable shape of its walls influencing the confinement of the two symmetric wells. The transition from quantum tunneling to classical crossover is investigated and it is found that unlike the bistable model based on the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, so-called $phi^4$ potential model, members of the family of parametrized double-well potentials can display a first-order transition above a universal critical value of the shape deformability parameter. Addressing their statistical mechanics within the framework of the transfer-integral operator formalism, the classical partition function is constructed with emphasis on low-lying eigenstates of the resulting Schrodinger-type equation. The quasi-exact solvability of this last equation to find the exact expression of the partition function, is shown to depend on a specific relationship between the shape deformability parameter and the thermodynamic temperature. The quasi-exact solvability condition is expressed analytically, and with this condition some exact wavefunctions and corresponding eigenenergies are derived at several temperatures. The exact probability densities obtained from the analytical expressions of the groundstate wavefunctions at different temperatures, are found to be in excellent agreement with the probability density from the Langevin dynamics. This agreement makes it possible to study probability density-based thermodynamics via Langevin techniques.
We examine the scaling with activity of the emergent length scales that control the nonequilibrium dynamics of an active nematic liquid crystal, using two popular hydrodynamic models that have been employed in previous studies. In both models we find that the chaotic spatio-temporal dynamics in the regime of fully developed active turbulence is controlled by a single active scale determined by the balance of active and elastic stresses, regardless of whether the active stress is extensile or contractile in nature. The observed scaling of the kinetic energy and enstropy with activity is consistent with our single-length scale argument and simple dimensional analysis. Our results provide a unified understanding of apparent discrepancies in the previous literature and demonstrate that the essential physics is robust to the choice of model.
