We formally deduce closed-form expressions for the transmitted effective wavenumber of a material comprising multiple types of inclusions or particles (multi-species), dispersed in a uniform background medium. The expressions, derived here for the first time, are valid for moderate volume fractions and without restriction on the frequency. We show that the multi-species effective wavenumber is not a straightforward extension of expressions for a single species. Comparisons are drawn with state-of-the-art models in acoustics by presenting numerical results for a concrete and a water-oil emulsion in two dimensions. The limit of when one species is much smaller than the other is also discussed and we determine the background medium felt by the larger species in this limit. Surprisingly, we show that the answer is not the intuitive result predicted by self-consistent multiple scattering theories. The derivation presented here applies to the scalar wave equation with cylindrical or spherical inclusions, with any distribution of sizes, densities, and wave speeds. The reflection coefficient associated with a half-space of multi-species cylindrical inclusions is also formally derived.

Metasurface with gradient phase response offers new alternative for steering the propagation of waves. Conventional Snells law has been revised by taking the contribution of local phase gradient into account. However, the requirement of momentum matc hing along the metasurface sets its nontrivial beam manipulation functionality within a limited-angle incidence. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the acoustic gradient metasurface supports the negative reflection for all-angle incidence. The mode expansion theory is developed to help understand how the gradient metasurface tailors the incident beams, and the all-angle negative reflection occurs when the first negative order Floquet-Bloch mode dominates inside the metasurface slab. The coiling-up space structures are utilized to build desired acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflections have been perfectly verified by experimental measurements. Our work offers the Floquet-Bloch modes perspective for qualitatively understanding the reflection behaviors of the acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflection characteristic possessed by acoustic gradient metasurface could enable a new degree of the acoustic wave manipulating and be applied in the functional diffractive acoustic elements, such as the all-angle acoustic back reflector.

In this paper, we generalize Huygens principle (HP), extinction theorem (ET), and Franz-Harrington formulation (FHF). In our previous works, the traditional HP, ET, and FHF in homogeneous isotropic environment are generalized to inhomogeneous anisotr opic lossy environment; the traditional FHF of homogeneous isotropic material system is generalized to inhomogeneous anisotropic lossy material system and then to piecewise inhomogeneous anisotropic lossy material system; the traditional HP, ET, and FHF of simply connected material system are generalized to multiply connected system and then to non-connected system; the traditional FHF of external scattering field and internal total field are generalized to internal scattering field and internal incident field. In previous work, it is proved that the generalized HP (GHP) and generalized ET (GET) are equivalent to each other; the GHP, GET, and generalized FHF (GFHF) satisfy so-called topological additivity, i.e., the GHP/GET/GFHF of whole electromagnetic (EM) system equals to the superposition of the GHP/GET/GFHF corresponding to all sub-systems. In this paper, the above results obtained in our previous works, which focuses on the EM system constructed by material bodies, are further generalized to the metal-material combined EM system in inhomogeneous anisotropic lossy environment, and traditional surface equivalence principle is generalized to line-surface equivalence principle.
As an example of thin composite layers we consider single and double grids of periodically arranged interacting wires loaded with a certain distributed reactive impedance. Currents induced to the wires by a normally incident plane wave are rigorously calculated and the corresponding dipole moment densities are determined. Using this data and the averaged fields we assign mesoscopic material parameters for the proposed grid structures. These parameters depend on the number of grids, and measure the averaged induced polarizations. It is demonstrated that properly loaded double grids possess polarization response that over some frequency range can be described by assigning negative values for the mesoscopic parameters. Discussion is conducted on the physical meaningfulness to assign such material parameters for thin composite slabs. The results predicted by the proposed method for the double-grid structures are compared with the results obtained using the commonly adopted S-parameter retrieval procedure.
We present a new class of electrostatics problems that are exactly solvable by adding finitely many image charges. Given a charge at some location inside a cavity bounded by up to four conducting grounded segments of spheres: if the spheres have a sy mmetry derived via a stereographic projection from a 4D finite reflection group, then this is a solvable generalization of the familiar problem of a charge inside a spherical cavity. There are 19 three-parametric families of finite groups formed by
We set a shortcut-to-adiabaticity strategy to design the trolley motion in a double-pendulum bridge crane. The trajectories found guarantee payload transport without residual excitation regardless of the initial conditions within the small oscillatio ns regime. The results are compared with exact dynamics to set the working domain of the approach. The method is free from instabilities due boundary effects or to resonances with the two natural frequencies.
