We describe how a systematic use the deep methods from $ell$-adic cohomology pioneered by Grothendieck and Deligne and further developed by Katz, Laumon allow to make progress on various classical questions from analytic number theory. This text is an extended version of a series of lectures given by the third and fourth authors during the 2016 Arizona Winter School.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Cole man. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke modules.

We introduce a notion of inertial equivalence for integral $ell$-adic representation of the Galois group of a global field. We show that the collection of continuous, semisimple, pure $ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a globa l field lifting a fixed absolutely irreducible residual representation and with given inertial type outside a fixed finite set of places is uniformly bounded independent of the inertial type.

In 1922, Mordell conjectured the striking statement that for a polynomial equation $f(x,y)=0$, if the topology of the set of complex number solutions is complicated enough, then the set of rational number solutions is finite. This was proved by Falti ngs in 1983, and again by a different method by Vojta in 1991, but neither proof provided a way to provably find all the rational solutions, so the search for other proofs has continued. Recently, Lawrence and Venkatesh found a third proof, relying on variation in families of $p$-adic Galois representations; this is the subject of the present exposition.

We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.
We prove that the cohomology groups of an etale Q_p-local system on a smooth proper rigid analytic space are finite-dimensional Q_p-vector spaces, provided that the base field is either a finite extension of Q_p or an algebraically closed nonarchimed ean field containing Q_p. This result manifests as a special case of a more general finiteness result for the higher direct images of a relative (phi, Gamma)-module along a smooth proper morphism of rigid analytic spaces over a mixed-characterstic nonarchimedean field.
