We present a comprehensive study of the three-active plus $N$ sterile neutrino model as a framework for constraining leptonic unitarity violation induced at energy scales much lower than the electroweak scale. We formulate a perturbation theory with expansion in small unitarity violating matrix element $W$ while keeping (non-$W$ suppressed) matter effect to all orders. We show that under the same condition of sterile state masses $0.1, text{eV}^2 lesssim m^2_{J} lesssim (1-10), text{GeV}^2$ as in vacuum, assuming typical accelerator based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, one can derive a very simple form of the oscillation probability which consists only of zeroth-order terms with the unique exception of probability leaking term $mathcal{C}_{alpha beta}$ of $mathcal{O} (W^4)$. We argue, based on our explicit computation to fourth-order in $W$, that all the other terms are negligibly small after taking into account the suppression due to the mass condition for sterile states, rendering the oscillation probability {em sterile-sector model independent}. Then, we identify a limited energy region in which this suppression is evaded and the effects of order $W^2$ corrections may be observable. Its detection would provide another way, in addition to detecting $mathcal{C}_{alpha beta}$, to distinguish between low-scale and high-scale unitarity violation. We also solve analytically the zeroth-order system in matter with uniform density to provide a basis for numerical evaluation of non-unitary neutrino evolution.

The unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix is a critical assumption underlying the standard neutrino-mixing paradigm. However, many models seeking to explain the as-yet-unknown origin of neutrino masses predict deviations from unitarity in the mixing of the active neutrino states. Motivated by the prospect that future experiments may provide a precise measurement of the lepton mixing matrix, we revisit current constraints on unitarity violation from oscillation measurements and project how next-generation experiments will improve our current knowledge. With the next-generation data, the normalizations of all rows and columns of the lepton mixing matrix will be constrained to $lesssim$10% precision, with the $e$-row best measured at $lesssim$1% and the $tau$-row worst measured at ${sim}10%$ precision. The measurements of the mixing matrix elements themselves will be improved on average by a factor of $3$. We highlight the complementarity of DUNE, T2HK, JUNO, and IceCube Upgrade for these improvements, as well as the importance of $ u_tau$ appearance measurements and sterile neutrino searches for tests of leptonic unitarity.

The recent experimental developments require a more precise theoretical study of weak decays of heavy baryon $Lambda_b^0$. In this work, we provide an updated and systematic analysis of both the semi-leptonic and nonleptonic decays of $Lambda^0_b$ in to baryons $Lambda^+_c$, $Lambda$, $p$, and $n$. The diquark approximation is adopted so that the methods developed in the $B$ meson system can be extended into the baryon system. The baryon-to-baryon transition form factors are calculated in the framework of a covariant light-front quark model. The form factors $f_3, ~g_3$ can be extracted and are found to be non-negligible. The semi-leptonic processes of $Lambda^0_bto Lambda^+_c(p)l^-bar u_l$ are calculated and the results are consistent with the experiment. We study the non-leptonic processes within the QCD factorization approach. The decay amplitudes are calculated at the next-to-leading order in strong coupling constant $alpha_s$. We calculate the non-leptonic decays of $Lambda^0_b$ into a baryon and a s-wave meson (pseudoscalar or vector) including 44 processes in total. The branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries are predicted. The numerical results are compared to the experimental data and those in the other theoretical approaches. Our results show validity of the diquark approximation and application of QCD factorization approach into the heavy baryon system.
A low-energy non-unitary leptonic mixing matrix is a generic effect of a large class of theories accounting for neutrino masses. It is shown how the extra CP-odd phases of a general non-unitary matrix allow for sizeable CP-asymmetries in channels oth er than those dominant in the standard unitary case. The $ u_muto u_tau$ channel turns out to be an excellent tool to further constrain moduli and phases. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship between our approach and the so-called non-standard neutrino interactions schemes: the sensitivities explored here apply as well to such constructions.
If leptonic unitarity is violated by new physics at an energy scale much lower than the electroweak scale, which we call low-scale unitarity violation, it has different characteristic features from those expected in unitarity violation at high-energy scales. They include maintaining flavor universality and absence of zero-distance flavor transition. We present a framework for testing such unitarity violation at low energies by neutrino oscillation experiments. Starting from the unitary 3 active plus $N$ (arbitrary integer) sterile neutrino model we show that by restricting the active-sterile and sterile-sterile neutrino mass squared differences to $gtrsim$ 0.1 eV$^2$ the oscillation probability in the $(3+N)$ model becomes insensitive to details of the sterile sector, providing a nearly model-independent framework for testing low-scale unitarity violation. Yet, the presence of the sterile sector leaves trace as a constant probability leaking term, which distinguishes low-scale unitarity violation from the high-scale one. The non-unitary mixing matrix in the active neutrino subspace is common for the both cases. We analyze how severely the unitarity violation can be constrained in $ u_{e}$-row by taking a JUNO-like setting to simulate medium baseline reactor experiments. Possible modification of the features of the $(3+N)$ model due to matter effect is discussed to first order in the matter potential.

We study the equation of state of neutron matter using a family of unitarity potentials all of which are constructed to have infinite $^1S_0$ scattering lengths $a_s$. For such system, a quantity of much interest is the ratio $xi=E_0/E_0^{free}$ wher e $E_0$ is the true ground-state energy of the system, and $E_0^{free}$ is that for the non-interacting system. In the limit of $a_sto pm infty$, often referred to as the unitary limit, this ratio is expected to approach a universal constant, namely $xisim 0.44(1)$. In the present work we calculate this ratio $xi$ using a family of hard-core square-well potentials whose $a_s$ can be exactly obtained, thus enabling us to have many potentials of different ranges and strengths, all with infinite $a_s$. We have also calculated $xi$ using a unitarity CDBonn potential obtained by slightly scaling its meson parameters. The ratios $xi$ given by these different unitarity potentials are all close to each other and also remarkably close to 0.44, suggesting that the above ratio $xi$ is indifferent to the details of the underlying interactions as long as they have infinite scattering length. A sum-rule and scaling constraint for the renormalized low-momentum interaction in neutron matter at the unitary limit is discussed.
