Relay (or remote) synchronization between two not directly connected oscillators in a network is an important feature allowing distant coordination. In this work, we report a systematic study of this phenomenon in multiplex networks, where inter-layer synchronization occurs between distant layers mediated by a relay layer that acts as a transmitter. We show that this transmission can be extended to higher order relay configurations, provided symmetry conditions are preserved. By first order perturbative analysis, we identify the dynamical and topological dependencies of relay synchronization in a multiplex. We find that the relay synchronization threshold is considerably reduced in a multiplex configuration, and that such synchronous state is mostly supported by the lower degree nodes of the outer layers, while hubs can be de-multiplexed without affecting overall coherence. Finally, we experimentally validated the analytical and numerical findings by means of a multiplex of three layers of electronic circuits.the analytical and numerical findings by means of a multiplex of three layers of electronic circuits.

It is known that intra-layer adaptive coupling among connected oscillators instigates explosive synchronization (ES) in multilayer networks. Taking an altogether different cue in the present work, we consider inter-layer adaptive coupling in a multip lex network of phase oscillators and show that the scheme gives rise to ES with an associated hysteresis irrespective of the network architecture of individual layers. The hysteresis is shaped by the inter-layer coupling strength and the frequency mismatch between the mirror nodes. We provide rigorous mean-field analytical treatment for the measure of global coherence and manifest they are in a good match with respective numerical assessments. Moreover, the analytical predictions provide a complete insight into how adaptive multiplexing suppresses the formation of a giant cluster, eventually giving birth to ES. The study will help in spotlighting the role of multiplexing in the emergence of ES in real-world systems represented by multilayer architecture. Particularly, it is relevant to those systems which have limitations towards change in intra-layer coupling strength.
This Letter investigates the nature of synchronization in multilayered and multiplexed populations in which the interlayer interactions are randomly pinned. First, we show that a multilayer network constructed by setting up all-to-all interlayer conn ections between the two populations leads to explosive synchronization in the two populations successively, leading to the coexistence of coherent and incoherent populations forming chimera states. Second, a multiplex formation of the two populations in which only the mirror nodes are interconnected espouses explosive transitions in the two populations concurrently. The emergence of explosive synchronization is substantiated with rigorous mean-field calculations demonstrating the existence of a bistable region. The random pinning in the interlayer interactions concerns the practical problems where the impact of dynamics of one network on that of other interconnected networks remains elusive, as is the case for many real-world systems.

Network topology plays an important role in governing the collective dynamics. Partial synchronization (PaS) on regular networks with a few non-local links is explored. Different PaS patterns out of the symmetry breaking are observed for different wa ys of non-local couplings. The criterion for the emergence of PaS is studied. The emergence of PaS is related to the loss of degeneration in Lyapunov exponent spectrum. Theoretical and numerical analysis indicate that non-local coupling may drastically change the dynamical feature of the network, emphasizing the important topological dependence of collective dynamics on complex networks.
Networks of chaotic units with static couplings can synchronize to a common chaotic trajectory. The effect of dynamic adaptive couplings on the cooperative behavior of chaotic networks is investigated. The couplings adjust to the activities of its tw o units by two competing mechanisms: An exponential decrease of the coupling strength is compensated by an increase due to de-synchronized activity. This mechanism prevents the network from reaching a steady state. Numerical simulations of a coupled map lattice show chaotic trajectories of de-synchronized units interrupted by pulses of mutually synchronized clusters. These pulses occur on all scales, sometimes extending to the entire network. Clusters of synchronized units can be triggered by a small group of synchronized units.
We investigate the stability of synchronized states in delay-coupled networks where synchronization takes place in groups of different local dynamics or in cluster states in networks with identical local dynamics. Using a master stability approach, w e find that the master stability function shows a discrete rotational symmetry depending on the number of groups. The coupling matrices that permit solutions on group or cluster synchronization manifolds show a very similar symmetry in their eigenvalue spectrum, which helps to simplify the evaluation of the master stability function. Our theory allows for the characterization of stability of different patterns of synchronized dynamics in networks with multiple delay times, multiple coupling functions, but also with multiple kinds of local dynamics in the networks nodes. We illustrate our results by calculating stability in the example of delay-coupled semiconductor lasers and in a model for neuronal spiking dynamics.
