In this work, we derive a quantum information theoretic quantity similar to the Leggett-Garg inequality, which can be defined in terms of neutrino transition probabilities. For the case of $ u_mu to u_e/bar{ u}_mutobar{ u}_e$ transitions, this quantity is sensitive to CP violating effects as well as the neutrino mass-hierarchy, namely which neutrino mass eigenstate is heavier than the other ones. The violation of the inequality for this quantity shows an interesting dependence on mass-hierarchy. For normal (inverted) mass-hierarchy, it is significant for $ u_mu to u_e$ ($bar{ u}_mu to bar{ u}_e$) transitions. This is applied to the two ongoing accelerator experiments T$2$K and NO$ u$A as well as the future experiment DUNE.

We propose two phenomenological scenarios of lepton mass matrices and show that either of them can exactly give rise to tan^2theta_{13} = m_e/(m_e + 2m_mu), tan^2theta_{23} = m_mu/(m_e + m_mu) and tan^2theta_{12} = (m_e m_2 + 2m_mu m_1)/(m_e m_1 + 2m _mu m_2) in the standard parametrization of lepton flavor mixing. The third relation, together with current experimental data, predicts a normal but weak hierarchy for the neutrino mass spectrum. We also obtain theta_{13} approx 2.8^circ for the smallest neutrino mixing angle and J approx 1.1% for the Jarlskog invariant of leptonic CP violation, which will soon be tested in the long-baseline reactor and accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments. A seesaw realization of both scenarios is briefly discussed.
This white paper is a condensation of a report by a committee appointed jointly by the Nuclear Science and Physics Divisions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The goal of this study was to identify the most promising technique(s) for r esolving the neutrino mass hierarchy. For the most part, we have relied on calculations and simulations presented by the proponents of the various experiments. We have included evaluations of the opportunities and challenges for these experiments based on what is available already in the literature.
Latest measurements have revealed that the deviation from a maximal solar mixing angle is approximately the Cabibbo angle, i.e. QLC relation. We argue that it is not plausible that this deviation from maximality, be it a coincidence or not, comes fro m the charged lepton mixing. Consequently we have calculated the required corrections to the exactly bimaximal neutrino mass matrix ansatz necessary to account for the solar mass difference and the solar mixing angle. We point out that the relative size of these two corrections depends strongly on the hierarchy case under consideration. We find that the inverted hierarchy case with opposite CP parities, which is known to guarantee the RGE stability of the solar mixing angle, offers the most plausible scenario for a high energy origin of a QLC-corrected bimaximal neutrino mass matrix. This possibility may allow us to explain the QLC relation in connection with the origin of the charged fermion mass matrices.

We review how a high-statistics observation of the neutrino signal from a future galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) may be used to discriminate between different neutrino mixing scenarios. Most SN neutrinos are emitted in the accretion and cooling phase, during which the flavor-dependent differences of the emitted neutrino spectra are small and rather uncertain. Therefore the discrimination between neutrino mixing scenarios using these neutrinos should rely on observables independent of the SN neutrino spectra. We discuss two complementary methods that allow for the positive identification of the mass hierarchy without knowledge of the emitted neutrino fluxes, provided that the 13-mixing angle is large, $sin^2theta_{13}gg 10^{-5}$. These two approaches are the observation of modulations in the neutrino spectra by Earth matter effects or by the passage of shock waves through the SN envelope. If the value of the 13-mixing angle is unknown, using additionally the information encoded in the prompt neutronization $ u_e$ burst--a robust feature found in all modern SN simulations--can be sufficient to fix both the neutrino hierarchy and to decide whether $theta_{13}$ is ``small or ``large.

Nowadays neutrino physics is undergoing a change of perspective: the discovery period is almost over and the phase of precise measurements is starting. Despite the limited statistics collected for some variables, the three--flavour oscillation neutri no framework is strengthening well. In this framework a new method has been developed to determine the neutrino mass ordering, one of the still unknown and most relevant parameters. The method is applied to the 2015 results of the NOvA experiment for $ u_mu rightarrow u_e$ appearance, including its systematic errors. A substantial gain in significance is obtained compared to the traditional $Deltachi^2$ approach. Perspectives are provided for future results obtainable by NOvA with larger exposures. Assuming the number of the 2015 $ u_e$ observed events scales with the exposure, an increase in only a factor three would exclude the inverted hierarchy at more than 95% C.L. over the full range of the CP violating phase. The preliminary 2016 NOvA measurement on umunue appearance has also been analyzed.
